To ask what this garment is? (Photos included)

My wealthy aunt gave me this a few years ago, and it’s hung in my wardrobe since because I was too embarrassed to ask what it is.

It feels like heavy silk and reminds me of an ultra posh dressing gown. Is that what it is? It’s so beautiful and it feels wrong for it to be used to watch Netflix of any evening. Could it be some sort of jacket or shawl? What is it, and how should it be worn? Can anyone tell me?

An evening coat?

Gatekeeper · 25/03/2022 20:01

Looks like an opera coat, designed to be worn over evening gowns

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 25/03/2022 20:01

Looks like a kimono?

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:01

Its a chinese dressing gown with no tie. Can be brought on ebay for not too much.

GoldenGorilla · 25/03/2022 20:01

How long is it? Like a jacket? I think I’d wear that as a jacket.

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:01

Souvenir type thing

Kimono.

LittleYellowLab · 25/03/2022 20:02

I would guess it’s a dressing gown. I think they’re called kimonos, does it have a belt with it?

MarthaFokker · 25/03/2022 20:02

@Philisophigal

It's a kimono. Usually worn as a fancy dressing gown.
Yep
LittleYellowLab · 25/03/2022 20:02

Cross posted - sorry.

BaronessBomburst · 25/03/2022 20:03

I think it might be a formal evening coat. You wear it over your cocktail dress/ evening dress.
I want one!

BoldMove · 25/03/2022 20:04

I have one very similar. Its a kimono dressing gown, a gift which was quite expensive. I've hardly ever worn because if the flappy arms though!

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:04

What do the tags say? You might be lucky and it might actually be silk.

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:05

Its a dressing gown with kimono style sleeves its definitely not an actual kimono

happysunr1se · 25/03/2022 20:05

It's an opera coat in an "oriental" style. It is not a real kimono.

Branleuse · 25/03/2022 20:06

Smoking jacket

Jellykat · 25/03/2022 20:07

Its a Kimono, wear it however/ whenever you wish

Hiiyfgg · 25/03/2022 20:07

@GoldenGorilla

It goes a couple of inches below my knee (I’m 5’7).

No, no belt.

I’d wear that as evening wear. It has a bohemian between the wars jacket kind of look. The finish looks far too good for nightwear. Look at that lovely lining! What does the label say?

MarthaFokker · 25/03/2022 20:10

This one is extremely similar OP

Anchoredowninanchorage · 25/03/2022 20:14

a gorgeous kimono, I love the contrast lining. Wear it with a camisole & jeans & heels on a summer evening or luxe lounging around the home like a twenties film star

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:15

Yeah could be an opera jacket if it didnt come with a belt. Id wear it whenever you want but keep in mind they dont wash well. I had a 1950s housecoat that i wore to death definitely regret it now!
