To ask what this garment is? (Photos included)

My wealthy aunt gave me this a few years ago, and it’s hung in my wardrobe since because I was too embarrassed to ask what it is.

It feels like heavy silk and reminds me of an ultra posh dressing gown. Is that what it is? It’s so beautiful and it feels wrong for it to be used to watch Netflix of any evening. Could it be some sort of jacket or shawl? What is it, and how should it be worn? Can anyone tell me?

That is indeed very similar, although mine is just bright red inside and doesn’t look reversible. Thank you for linking.

Disappointing though because it seems it is indeed designed for sitting on the sofa. What a waste.

I’m going to a do tomorrow and it’s quite dressy, and I was tempted to wear it over my dress but feel too worried it would be viewed as turning up in my fleecy dressing gown.

If anyone asks tell them it’s a vintage opera coat?

Thoosa · 25/03/2022 20:18

Much too nice for indoors. Wear it.

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:18

Depends how you wear it and with what accessories. The pyjama look is pretty in.

ClaymationHeartsStillBeat · 25/03/2022 20:18

@Anchoredowninanchorage

a gorgeous kimono, I love the contrast lining. Wear it with a camisole & jeans & heels on a summer evening or luxe lounging around the home like a twenties film star
This! Good plan.
vipersnest1 · 25/03/2022 20:18

@Hiiyfgg, no, it won't. Angel Strawbridge has set the bar for you here as she wears them very often.
You may well not have the same body shape as her, but nevertheless they are a beautiful item of clothing.

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:21

A red top and some nice baggy trousers and a black bag with some gold jewellery? And some black pumps?

knittingaddict · 25/03/2022 20:23

Looks like an evening jacket to me.

Whatup · 25/03/2022 20:23

Well whatever you decide i hope you enjoy it! Have fun on your night out:)

Booboobagins · 25/03/2022 20:24

I have a dressing gown like it, hand embroidered. Bought 20 years ago by my DH to recognise my heritage :)

It is lovely. If you dont feel comfortable wearing it tomorrow for your do, please take @anchouredowninanchorage 's suggestion of wearing as a summer cover up over jeans, heels and nice top for more casual summer evening wear. Dont save it as a fancy dressing gown. (The idea of a fancy dressing gown makes me think of lilo lil from bread.)
Hiiyfgg · 25/03/2022 20:34

Okay, thanks everyone.

Can I ask those in the know about what works fashion wise, would it go over this dress? Or, if I ever dare wear it, does it need to be over something more streamlined?

I’d put the jacket over trousers and let it speak for itself.

The dress is nice too but together they be a bit much.

Jellykat · 25/03/2022 20:37

Not with that dress i'm afraid, way too much!
The Kimono is a statement piece, so simple garments underneath imo.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 25/03/2022 20:39

I think it would look fab over tailored black trousers and a plain top.

JedEye · 25/03/2022 20:40

Wear with jeans

Yespresh · 25/03/2022 20:42

Its a gorgeous statement piece so wear it with something very simple. All black or jeans, t-shirt and trainers

Hiiyfgg · 25/03/2022 20:43

Okay, great!

I will wear a different coat tomorrow, and keep this one to wear with trousers when a suitable event presents itself. Thanks everyone.

This is an Evening Coat. No belt loops and no belt.

EmpressSuiko · 25/03/2022 20:49

It’s similar to a kimono, I’d assume it was intended to be worn as a dressing gown.

doglady4744 · 25/03/2022 20:55

I'd say that it is a jacket for evening wear based on the Japanese Kimono and the Kimono is usually worn with a broad sash called an Obi,which can be bought separately. This looks of beautiful quality and is possibly made of heavy silk. The wonderful gold dragon embroidery would make this an expensive item when purchased. These were popular in the 1930's and inexpensive copies ,usually in inferior materials can be bought today. Lucky lady to have this item!

Pbbananabagel · 25/03/2022 21:08

Would look amazing with wide leg black trousers and a sleeveless white/cream blouse and heels

tkwal · 25/03/2022 21:22

Kimonos are Japanese and worn with a broad sash known as an Obi. This is Chinese but without knowing if its really silk its hard to say much more

No idea how to find out. The bit where the tag should be has nothing there. It looks like it’s been ripped off.

Is your aunt still around to ask?
