Why do mumsnetters do this

summertime13 · 24/03/2022 19:55

Why on most threads do mumsnetters put "nc because outing"? Why do you need to state that you have NC?

OP posts:
Toottooot · 24/03/2022 19:56

Whilst also saying ‘cash the cheque’

ShowOfHands · 24/03/2022 19:56

So that people don't think you're a first time poster

MuggleMadness · 24/03/2022 19:56

In an attempt to stop posters saying 'interesting first post'

WrongSideOfEverything · 24/03/2022 19:57

So they don’t get accused of being a troll for not having posting history I guess.
But I might be totally wrong.

Davros · 24/03/2022 19:58

I haven't NC in the 18+ years I've been on here. It's not everyone

Toottooot · 24/03/2022 19:59

All very well, but trolls will read these threads and pick up on all the pathetic cash the cheques etc and also start their threads with it.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 24/03/2022 20:01

Because people accuse them of being a troll and a first time poster.

peasandcarrrots · 24/03/2022 20:02

I name change regularly because I don't want an outing post connected to personal/private posts and someone being able to join the dots. I know a lot of friends and acquaintances that use MN so I would rather not have all my posts traced back to me.

Suppose people point it out so people
Don't think they are new to the site or a troll.

Laiste · 24/03/2022 20:02

I've done it in the past - and thinking about it i don't know why!

If you've hung around here for years it feels comfortable to post. Then when you want to post something v sensitive, or outing or embarrassing you feel you want anonymity from your normal name. But then you feel you want everyone to know it's you - but with a disguise on GrinGrin

Daft really.

99pronouns · 24/03/2022 20:04

I NC very frequently as I'm paranoid I will be discovered - I bang on about MN to my friends and family, but I don't them to find me on here!

I don't think it's daft, I get it!

I don't NC. However, I also don't start threads, though am happy to share personal details on threads.

Occasionally I think of starting threads, but feel that I would NC as don't want to be linked to other posts. Then decide I can't be bothered to, and don't start the thread!

Who even bothers to check if someone is a first time poster

This! Most people on here are very suspicious of new posters.
Ohyesiam · 24/03/2022 20:11

How do you name change? I’m a tech phobic and have been wondering for ages.

Laiste · 24/03/2022 20:11

@Momicrone

What's wrong with being a first time poster
Nothing at all - unless it's a certain type of post or a certain specific subjects. You can be mistaken for a troll.

Trolls or previously banned posters will often have no posting history and try to get as many hits on their thread as they can before MN catches up and deletes the thread.

😂😂😂 yes!
EveSix · 24/03/2022 20:26

I think it's weird that anyone would think to check if a post is a poster's first post. It would never occur to me that someone would post other than in good faith, and I definitely don't feel suspicious of first time contributors. That's a bit sad. I probably NC once a year, and occasionally bring out old favourites for an airing again.

ArtVandalay · 24/03/2022 20:28

I NC frequently.

Can't say I have ever checked a poster's history - but I can see why people say it, as sometimes other posters might suspect them of trolling.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 24/03/2022 21:54

What do you mean by cash the cheque?

ShowOfHands · 25/03/2022 14:29

It's actually cancel the cheque and a reference to a long aibu thread.

BIWI · 25/03/2022 14:43

This is shockingly naive.

Trolls are rife all over the internet, and we have a lot of them on here.

There are lots of posters who don't post in good faith!

IwaswhoIam · 25/03/2022 14:47

I’ve never understood it myself either . Why in the world say it ? Lol

I’ve never looked up a user name to see if they were a first time poster or not . Even if they were a first timer I don’t see anything wrong with that . We all were at one point.

I have named changed though ( I just don’t announce it 😝) . If I’m posting something confidential I do it because with some of my other posts ( if someone did snoop) it could be revealing .
