Obviously light-hearted... Just find them annoying to assemble, don't have much surface space to put them on and then you have to sort them when they die!

Not to mention you normally receive them when you least feel like doing all the above - when poorly, after surgery, grieving etc...

Give me chocolates anyday 😁

@Vwswimmer1

Lily pollen stains are the worst!

Have enjoyed reading posts from the people that agree and those that love flowers!

LILY POLLEN WILL KILL CATS.

Sorry to shout, but some posters might not know this.

That's why all flowers go outside immediately and then binned/bunged to MIL. 😺

Fernandina · 18/03/2022 16:41

I do so wish they'd put a warning label on all bunches/bouquets of flowers that include lilies. If a cat gets lily pollen on themselves, just by brushing past or walking in the fallen stuff, they wash it off and it can kill them. They don't have to nibble or chew the flowers, the pollen is enough. Lilies are so toxic to cats. Alstroemeria too.

crosstalk · 18/03/2022 16:48

Love flowers. We have a fresh bunch every week, usually salvaged and revived from the coop or similar. But we also have small pots of violets, anenomes or miniature daffs or whatever which don't need any prep (just keeping damp) which give great pleasure.

I wouldn't send flowers - always too expensive.

SpikeySmooth · 18/03/2022 17:08

I'd much prefer a pot plant. I think cut flowers are such a waste of money.

coronafiona · 18/03/2022 17:11

Aw I love them especially this time of year. A little bunch of daffodils or tulips is lovely!

ManateeFair · 18/03/2022 17:44

Oh, I absolutely LOVE getting flowers. I would rather have flowers than chocolates as a gift any day of the week and I buy a cheap bunch from the supermarket every week when we do a food shop. I really don’t find popping a few stems in a vase to be any kind of chore at all, and they always cheer me up.

Obviously very much a case of each to their own, though! It’s amazing how different we all are.

Someone gave me a voucher for a posh spa massage once, and everyone seemed to think that was a great present. But I was horrified - I can’t think of anything I’d find less enjoyable/relaxing.

BeeandG · 18/03/2022 18:14

I love fresh flowers especially spring flowers but agree about timings. I had an unexpected operation a couple of weeks back and arranging flowers was really the last thing I felt like doing. The first bunch just went in a vase without trimming them as to be honest it was a struggle to get up off the sofa let alone arrange flowers. Once I felt brighter I did sort them out.

Qwill · 18/03/2022 18:18

I love them, especially the more unusual flowers in big arrangements, it’s something I never buy for myself! But I appreciate some people don’t. I hate chocolates and feel bad for chucking them out if I can’t find anyone to palm them off on!

Soubriquet · 18/03/2022 18:19

I used to love dh buying me flowers, but I really haven’t over the last few years.

Money is tight as it is, and whilst I love the flowers he buys, they aren’t safe for the cat and dogs. He insists it’s fine but I’m still very cautious.

I would much rather a new (and cheaper) book which he is finally getting the hint about

LightSpeeds · 18/03/2022 18:19

I can cope with ONE BUNCH ONLY Thanks

BiscuitLover3678 · 18/03/2022 18:21

I agree and I don’t like the fact they’re just going to die. It feels so wasteful. I’d rather an actual plant that can live. Or someone ideally to plant something in my garden. Someone please sort my garden out instead. Wine

Longcovid21 · 18/03/2022 18:22

God, you live a charmed live to moan about receiving flowers. No one has bought me any for approx 20 years. Hope that helps?

Fairyarmpits · 18/03/2022 18:25

I love flowers. We have some wonderful florists locally so I am very spoilt for choice.

I bloody loathe supermarket bunches though. Crap bunches from Tesco make me shudder!

BrioNotBiro · 18/03/2022 18:45

@DoorLion

I am wondering where you all keep your vases if sorting them out is a faff - I open a cupboard, take out a vase, and Bob's your Uncle! Same as getting a saucepan or a mug or a plate. Do you all keep yours in the Crystal Maze?
Because I never buy flowers, the vase (singular) is at the back of a cupboard behind a potential tsunami of spare bog rolls, mops, ironing board etc. Dicing with death to extract it! Grin
EthelTheAardvark · 18/03/2022 18:49

YANBU, for all the reasons you mention. They look lovely, but it's just not worth the faff.

I work in a job where people sometimes very kindly decide to express their appreciation by presents. For male colleagues, it's virtually always wine, for me it's always flowers. I really would prefer wine, or, even better, chocolates.

sharksarecool · 18/03/2022 19:13

I HATE flowers! You either have to go to the effort of maintaining them or you watch them die and feel guilty that you're wasting the gift-giver's money.

The worst gift I ever received was a house plant, given to me after the birth of DS1. A family friend handed me the plant and said "I'm giving you this plant because it's much easier to look after than a baby!" Four days later, the plant was dead. Luckily the friend turned out to be wrong, DS1 has survived 14 years in my care!

I did say it was light hearted...

OMG - what sort of a world am I living in, where putting a bunch of flowers into a vase is such an effort!!!! Bloody hell. Those of us who love flowers will gladly take them off the hands of you killjoys who don't.

Lady0racle · 18/03/2022 19:31

Oh gosh YANBU. They’re so much work to get them looking presentable in a vase and then inevitably the water goes slimy and smelly in about 5 minutes. And then they die.

I appreciate the sentiment/thought behind it but I’d far rather have a card or a bar of chocolate or something.

SquirrelG · 18/03/2022 19:31

WTF - I've never heard of any flower giver who actually expects the flowers to last forever, as for the "effort of maintaining them" ??!!!

I daresay the people who hate receiving flowers are the same people who finding getting Christmas cards such a tedious thing. Thank goodness my world is populated by very different people.

Longcovid21 · 18/03/2022 19:32

@SquirrelG exactly.

streamee · 18/03/2022 19:32

Hate it. I came home from the hospital with a new baby and flowers everywhere.

I should have been grateful but instead I was annoyed that I had yet another job to do

dipdye · 18/03/2022 19:34

Yup. Plants or wine are easier

SquirrelG · 18/03/2022 19:35

LILY POLLEN WILL KILL CATS.

I love lilies, and often have them inside, and in my whole 62 years of living with cats have never had a problem, and no cat has ever gone near them. Also. there are lilies in thousands of gardens around the town, I've grown them myself, and I've yet to hear of anyone losing a cat because of that. It's really not the huge issue many of you are making it out to be - once again the MN overly anxious brigade are out in force. at.

Nope I actually love sending and receiving Christmas cards and all other cards actually.

I regularly send my friends and family cards and things for various occasions.

I'm just not a fan of being sent flowers 🙂
