Afraid of the last two slices in the loaf?

Lightheaded, I laugh really.

We must go through a loaf a day, so it's not like it's ever stale, but for some strange reason, somebody always leaves the last 2 slices in the bread bag, not just the crusts, the slices too.

Why??? What's the point 😂 such waste. They don't even chuck it in the freezer.

So there I am making toast I didn't actually want so it doesn't get wasted while the new loaf sits there half eaten.

Same with fruit, they start on the new fruit when the old stuff is still perfectly edible.

So.....AIBU to think you should just use up the what's left before you start the new one? Surely not 🤣

Also, feel free to whinge here 😂

My DD has sent entire loaves to feed the ducks when I look after my grandchildren- they are always in date. I "upcycle" them into bread and butter pudding and give the ducks bird food.Grin

Same here but it's also plus the 'buffer' slice which is the second slice after the crust at the end it's opened. No one ever eats that and it just works its way down to the bottom.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 15/03/2022 22:13

Depends what fruit you mean. Green bananas always taste better than the black spotted yellow ones.

BluebellsGreenbells · 15/03/2022 22:14

Crust is the best part!

DH opens new milk before current milk has been finished, same with butter, loo rolls, biscuits …. List goes on

Icenii · 15/03/2022 22:15

The crust makes the best toast.

Bryonny84 · 15/03/2022 22:15

Er, No one (and I mean no one) eats the last two slices of the loaf or the last two biscuits in the tin or the last bit of anything. I don't waste it. The dog or the birds have a feast lol. I mean WHO eats that big hunk of heel bread in the loaf? Ah DH.

Quackpot · 15/03/2022 22:17

Oh I like the end crusts toasted with a poached egg on top 🤤

Ah yes that slightly smaller bit more crusty buffer slice.
Momicrone · 15/03/2022 22:19

I cut a slither off the crust slice to try and turn it into a normal slice cos I hate waste, but its never as good

ouch321 · 15/03/2022 22:20

There is an obvious solution I think.

People use bread 2 slices at a time to make a sandwich so theyd..

Crust... discard
Slice 1 and 2 - sandwich
Slice 3 and 4 - sandwich
Slice 5 - lacks a 'partner' hence useless so abandon
Crust - discard

Start new loaf

Lagattolove · 15/03/2022 22:20

Just put the sliced into the middle of the new loaf. No one will ever know

Genius!

I'd like to add, the last few sheets of toilet paper. What's wrong with it?

Yep, crust definitely my favourite!
TerryChoc · 15/03/2022 22:33

It’s the sandwich fillers here. So ham, chicken etc when there are perfectly good slices left and within date however as it’s the last few it clearly must be poisonous?

Utterlybananas333 · 15/03/2022 22:38

Meanwhile here I am ruminating on the fact that I call the crust slices the "bum bread." They are the butt slices at the start and end of the loaf. *Shrug. K bye

Clarabe1 · 15/03/2022 22:38

The last slices of bread I am fine with but I am always suspicious of the last satsuma in the fruit bowl. I have no bloody idea why. I end up chucking it at DH and saying ‘eat this or it’s going on the bin’ It annoys me sitting there on its own.

Hollywolly1 · 15/03/2022 22:39

We don't waste a thing as we feed the birds and we have a bernese/newfoundland dog and he loves leftovers and any meal i have I always leave him bits as well plus kids come home from school he roots for lunch boxes for scraps and will eat non food items like kitchen towel if I'm not quick enough to get to it before he does and he used to eat socks as well and dish cloths and legs so no waste here 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hollywolly1 · 15/03/2022 22:41

Sorry typo not legs i meant LEGO😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

MagnoliaXYZ · 15/03/2022 22:41

I agree with some other posts - the crusts are the best part, the thicker the better, lightly toasted and smothered in butter.

Hollywolly1 · 15/03/2022 22:42

P.S we do feed our dog thats just extra bits he gets

Quackpot · 15/03/2022 22:46

Oh god yes! Happens here too 😂

I always start from the middle when I open a new loaf of bread because it's always the softest. I rarely eat the crust and when I do it has to be toasted.

BluebellsGreenbells · 15/03/2022 22:49

Clutches pearls. Faints.

Lovesabadboy · 15/03/2022 22:49

I think that people don't use the last two slices because it might mean - heaven forfend - that they then have to acknowledge the end of the loaf and have to gasp dispose of the wrapper and get another loaf out of the freezer.

Same with the last 2 squares of loo roll - always left (for me!) - so that they don't have to change the loo roll which takes about 2.5 seconds!!
