Afraid of the last two slices in the loaf?

Lightheaded, I laugh really.

We must go through a loaf a day, so it's not like it's ever stale, but for some strange reason, somebody always leaves the last 2 slices in the bread bag, not just the crusts, the slices too.

Why??? What's the point 😂 such waste. They don't even chuck it in the freezer.

So there I am making toast I didn't actually want so it doesn't get wasted while the new loaf sits there half eaten.

Same with fruit, they start on the new fruit when the old stuff is still perfectly edible.

So.....AIBU to think you should just use up the what's left before you start the new one? Surely not 🤣

Also, feel free to whinge here 😂

Toasted heels with dippy eggs... breakfast of the gods!!

RoyKentsChestHair · 15/03/2022 22:55

@IWanderedLonely

My DD has sent entire loaves to feed the ducks when I look after my grandchildren- they are always in date. I "upcycle" them into bread and butter pudding and give the ducks bird food.Grin
Good call. Bread isn’t great food for ducks, so feeding them bird food or peas and sweetcorn is much better for them.

And bread and butter pudding probably isn’t super good for humans but it’s delicious so who cares?!

I always put the last slice or two in the freezer and then whizz them up when I need breadcrumbs.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 15/03/2022 23:01

I feed them into the mini food processor to make breadcrumbs and bung em in the freezer.

Margot78 · 15/03/2022 23:06

Guilty - always leave the last slice, the last bit of loo roll, the last squeeze of toothpaste, the tired last slice of ham. I’ve always hated goodbyes 🤷‍♀️

JeanMarie · 15/03/2022 23:34

Oh God I could feel my nerves twitching reading this! My 3 adult ds are back at home....since first lockdown. I've been poorly recently and they have been great but ....and I shouldn't whinge really....the thing with leaving the last few slices really grates on me...and who on earth puts empty milk cartons back in the fridge....likewise empty cereal packets back in the cupboard. Grrrr! But what really gets on my last nerve is the loo roll....or more precisely the cardboard tube when it's run out. One time I decided to wait them out....to see just how long it would be before someone would dispose of them....it got to 14 empty tubes before I cracked. As I ranted and raved said sons made two light sabres from the empty tubes and proceeded to enact Star Wars. I love them really but grrrrrr! lol

Mossstitch · 15/03/2022 23:43

@JeanMarie. That made me laugh, I've got three grown up sons who have been known to use cardboard tubes as swords.............. but you are made of stronger stuff than me I weakened at 4 inner tubes from the toilet rolls lined up on the radiator.......... And why leave a few crumbs in the bottom of cereal box and don't get me started on empty cans/bottles on the kitchen table when two steps more to the recycling box😤💞

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2022 23:51

DH has both the crusts off freshly baked bread before I can get to it, unless I'm very lucky. Which then makes slicing the loaf harder too.

JeanMarie · 15/03/2022 23:59

@mossstich oh I'd forgotten the recycling! I'm always up first and when I go down to the kitchen in the morning my heart sinks. Yep...cans/bottles on the worktop.....recycling boxes are about 4 feet away! Also, while I'm ranting can I just mention the dishes ! I wash , dry and put away the dishes after dinner....but some mornings I have to actually wash a bowl before I can have breakfast! Where the heck do all these dirty dishes come from!?

IAmNeverWrong · 16/03/2022 00:16

How about bread-and-cheese pudding? buttered bread, grated cheese, beaten eggs with milk poured over, bake in oven.

GrandTheftWalrus · 16/03/2022 00:22

When I buy Warburtons bread I don't eat the outsiders. But when I but mothers pride the best bit of them are the outsiders.

I know that's not the original question about leaving extra slices.

DdraigGoch · 16/03/2022 00:52

@BellaTheDarkOverlord

Depends what fruit you mean. Green bananas always taste better than the black spotted yellow ones.
Oh god no! I can tolerate an overripe one, but an underripe one makes me shudder.

Anyway, the basic rule of stock rotation is to use up the oldest thing first.

Its butter/spread here. No matter how well I think I've hidden the new one and placed the current one at the the front, they always seem to find the new one...

Bread... are you meaning fresh or a sliced sandwich loaf? Sluced bread.. the crust is pointless. To thick and claggy. Fresh bread, a baguette certainly... DD1 and I have an end each, the other heathens have the middle bit.

raspberrymuffin · 16/03/2022 08:02

Sorry to hear my DH has been showing up at your house like one of those cats that pretends to be stray in order to get a second lunch. I promise he is fed properly at home, where he is also allowed to indulge in his scientific curiosity by leaving the bag containing the unwanted final slices in hidden locations around the kitchen to grow interesting new life forms.

I freeze the crusty first and last slice then on a Sunday when food times are all messed up because everyone's in and out at different times I top them with pizza sauce and cheese then grill.
Or make breadcrumbs out of them
With the last two slices I'd just put them in with the new loaf, how is anyone going to know?!?

ThatsNotItAtAll · 16/03/2022 10:07

keeping bread in the freezer until needed helps a bit... we have the same problem with cereal though, and generally with teens who cook just for themselves opening a family size pack of something like fresh pasta or even a cartoon of cherry tomatoes or a block of fetta cheese and using a generous two portion s and leaving over half but not enough for the meal planned for the whole family the following day...

My biggest gripe atm is teens cooking only for themselves (which on its own I'm happy with - we eat a family meal together almost every day but when people are in at different times and teens are hungry I'm happy they cook rather than eat biscuits or cereal) and leaving the pans on the side if the dishwasher is clean and it isn't their turn (rota) or filling the dishwasher with a huge frying pan or inexplicably two, a colander, a big pan used to boil water... and then turning it on (the eco cycle which runs for about 5 hours) and leaving anything they use after that on the side dirty - because the dishwasher is on...

If you are cooking just for yourself not the family wash your own pans by hand - especially things like the colander which can be rinsed in two seconds ffs AngryGrinBrew

ThatsNotItAtAll · 16/03/2022 10:09

a carton of cherry tomatoes, not a cartoon... although maybe a comic strip...

I did that with marmite as well when the kids were younger. I might need to do it again. Yummy.

Hang on!

Am I missing something?

People seem to be boasting about chucking out four slices of good bread, just because there's a couple of crusty imperfect ones at each end of a loaf.

If you'd ever been really hungry, without a penny to buy anything else, you wouldn't countenance throwing away one single crumb of a loaf of bread.

I know, because I've been in that position.

ThatsNotItAtAll · 16/03/2022 21:13

WheresThatCatGoneNow yes you are missing something if you think people are boasting about throwing food away - they're complaining about other members of their households being lazy or odd about leaving bits of food because said family members either see the last portion as undesirable (mostly illogically in the case of the slice of bread next to the crust) or so as not to do the miniscule amount of "work" associated with completely finishing up something (throwing away packaging or whatever).

Yes, you seem to be missing the point of the thread. Re-read my op please.

I've also read the thread properly.
