Money from a relative

An aunt is about to sell her business and downsize her house. She has said she wants to give me some money from this.

It will be something like 10-15k.

I’m happily married with 2 dc and a mortgage.

I’d quite like to use some of it to have my teeth straightened (around £6k) and the rest for home improvements.

Does that sound unreasonable?

I can’t work it out. It feels strangely selfish. DH doesn’t care. He said it’s my aunt therefore my money.

YABU - embrace the crooked teeth

YANBU - straighten the fuckers

Not selfish at all, my mil is in her 60s and recently had her teeth straightened and whitened etc and she is so much more confident and happy when we see them, she wishes she’d done it sooner!

Merryoldgoat · 13/03/2022 23:58

Thank you @fourandnomore

I should’ve had it done as a teen but a variety of factors means it never happened and I really hate my terrible teeth

Not unreasonable at all.

A friend of mine had bad teeth for years and recently had a lot of work which cost a fortune but the difference in her confidence is priceless.

Merryoldgoat · 13/03/2022 23:58

Thank you @Selttan

Get your teeth done.
It will definitely bring you joy

Perpop · 14/03/2022 00:09

You go girl

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 14/03/2022 00:10

Definitely get the teeth done! It really helped me. Although I paid £3K. Did you actually have a quote for £6K?

1vandal2 · 14/03/2022 00:11

Honestly crooked teeth that are straightened never stay straightened i wouldn't bother

Caminante · 14/03/2022 00:15

But maybe she's not thinking about braces but rather veneers or implants? Those will last a long time.

Merryoldgoat · 14/03/2022 00:18

@TheDuchessOfBeddington

Yes - I have a complicated case so unfortunately it’s more expensive

I’ll post a pic.

As you can see there’s extreme crowding and a significant overbite.

I’ve had a really good look at those pics.

I am getting them straightened.

HiJenny35 · 14/03/2022 00:24

I was going to say no I wouldn't spend that much on my teeth thinking they were just wonky but then you added the photos and they really are overcrowded, that must be uncomfortable to eat, go for it, it's clearly something you are never going to feel confident about otherwise.

HiJenny35 · 14/03/2022 00:25

On the other hand they are lovely and white.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/03/2022 00:26

I would if it was me, and thats nothing to do with your pictures. We all have something about us that we hate and if the means to do something about it came along, I would certainly fix my issue.

Go for it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/03/2022 00:27

And yeah, they really are nice and white! Wish mine were!

Merryoldgoat · 14/03/2022 00:28

I do try to keep them clean. Even the hygienist says they’re surprisingly clean given the crowding.

OP posts:
wheresthehope · 14/03/2022 00:28

Go for it!

Aquamarine1029 · 14/03/2022 00:29

Absolutely, without question, get your teeth done. You will be so happy you did. My grandmother got braces when she was 54, and this was back in the 1970's. She lived to 99, and she always said getting her teeth done was one of the best decisions she ever made. I'm so happy for you!

LaurenKelsey · 14/03/2022 00:29

It will be money well-spent, getting your teeth straightened. If you follow up with using a retainer they will stay straight. I hope you do it!

Merryoldgoat · 14/03/2022 00:30

I suspect because I don’t smoke or drink coffee/red wine that I’ve been lucky

Thank you for being kind in the face of such horror!

They do as both my daughters had their teeth straightened and they stayed straight but you do need to wear a retainer when the braces come off to allow the gums to form round that's what keeps them in place. You wear it at first all the time then just at night. I had crowns over top of my crooked teeth and I wish I'd had braces . Crowns need replacing as the gums recede and you get a black line. You will not regret getting braces
NeverChange · 14/03/2022 00:56

Absolutely go for it, why not spend money on you and it's not being frivolous, you are spending it in something that will permanently benefit you

As others have mentioned your teeth look in really good condition other than the spacing. Imagine the smile you will have when they are straightener! Do it and don't feel one bit guilty. I'm sure you've put others first previously, put yourself first this time.

I did something with money that came to me similarly. I never would have spent otherwise and it has helped my confidence in the most profound way (think scar issue). I think you will feel great if you get this done FOR YOU! What a lovely gift from your aunt.
