Money from a relative

An aunt is about to sell her business and downsize her house. She has said she wants to give me some money from this.

It will be something like 10-15k.

I’m happily married with 2 dc and a mortgage.

I’d quite like to use some of it to have my teeth straightened (around £6k) and the rest for home improvements.

Does that sound unreasonable?

I can’t work it out. It feels strangely selfish. DH doesn’t care. He said it’s my aunt therefore my money.

YABU - embrace the crooked teeth

YANBU - straighten the fuckers

@Merryoldgoat

I’ve had a really good look at those pics.

I am getting them straightened.

They're great teeth to start out with - nice and healthy and white. It would be awesome if you posted an after picture once you've done it!

Your teeth are part of your general health and straightening them will help to keep them and you healthy. Go for it.

Go for it!

DD2 just got her braces off last week. The confidence and self esteem she is feeling now is a joy to behold. That will be you OP.

(And yes to wearing your retainer religiously after you get the braces off!!!)

I'm not sure if it's common on the UK (I'm in Au's) but I have a permanent retainer - so basically a piece of wire of on the back of my front teeth.

It's the best thing, without it my teeth would've moved after having my braces off even with a normal retainer. It's been on 23 years and I barely notice it.

How is your pension situation? If I got £20k I'd top up my pension or over pay my mortgage. However, I'm a boring, sensible old fart though! Grin

Savvysix1984 · 14/03/2022 03:41

Go for it!

Oomph · 14/03/2022 03:41

I did it. And I’m glad I did every day.

Monty27 · 14/03/2022 03:54

Do it. Don't hesitate. Probably life changing. my teeth are worse

florianfortescue · 14/03/2022 04:58

Do it! The £4K I spent on invisalign was the best money I've ever spent. It has done wonders for my confidence.

Home4christmas · 14/03/2022 04:59

Invisalign with retainers. 100% go for it.

Monty27 · 14/03/2022 05:14

Every time you smile your auntie will be happy 💖

While teeth do continue to move all through life, I'd have them done. I had mine done in my late 40s because they were interfering with my speech, and making me spit.

SunshineAndFizz · 14/03/2022 05:39

100% go for it. If I had spare money I'd love to get mine done. Well worth the money.

readingismycardio · 14/03/2022 05:46

Of course YANBU! Teeth are so important! Do it and don't even think about being selfish.

TriciaMcMillan · 14/03/2022 06:38

Some of the best money I ever spent was getting my teeth straightened. Do it!

MrsDThomas · 14/03/2022 06:41

Go for it!
I’d have my crows feet done.

topdot · 14/03/2022 06:45

Definitely go for it, just do your research and make sure you get a really experienced orthodontist, there are a lot of cosmetic dentists out there and while I'm not saying they are all bad, for your case I think you need a specialist. I had Invisalign for relatively minor crooked teeth and it worked, but actually with hindsight I wish I had just gone for metal train tracks, the Invisalign are not really invisible and they feel horrible on your teeth for 20 hours a day. Good luck!
