To ask where you get your fancy dresses?

I’m getting married this summer and I REALLY don’t want to wear white/ivory/cream/pastel. I want a beautiful dress, but something red carpet/black tie fancy in a jewel tone or metallic. Ideally something I might conceivably wear again.

This is surprisingly hard to find! So, if you’re a person who owns or wears this sort of thing, where would you go?

Online, London or the Home Counties, ideally. And I’d like keep it under £2K if humanly possible (which seems an insane amount to spend on a dress to me, but I’ve been assured I can’t go much lower).

Thank you!

I got married in an Amanda Wakeley evening gown from Harvey Nicks . I used their personal shopping service.

Have a look at David Bridal - bridesmaid dresses - they are closest to £200 than £2000!

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 13/03/2022 10:46

Look at Mark Meliá. He makes dresses and is based in Liverpool. Some fabulous clothes.

Liverpool is a bit far for me, I’m afraid. But, thanks for the recommendation.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads The Harvey Nicks personal shopping service? Interesting!

@Hausa, it was a fair few years ago! I’m normally more Next/Tu/Boden for best, so I needed some guidance on “fancy”.

Horriblewoman · 13/03/2022 11:18

I'd look at netaporter or the outnet.

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/03/2022 11:42

I buy maxi dresses for day to day wear from Little Mistress - nowhere near £2K so perhaps not “fancy” enough, but really glam and colourful - and people always assume I’ve paid hundreds for them (and are thus shocked that I drag around in the mud at festivals wearing them and am blaise about spilling red wine down the front!)

LittleGwyneth · 13/03/2022 11:46

I would browse Net A Porter and the Outnet to get an idea of what you like, and potentially order a few to see. But when you're looking at the £1000 per dress area, ordering ten dresses isn't such an option!

Personal shopping at a department store also a vg shout. I hate Harrods personally but I'd be inclined to go into central for the day and do Harvey Nicks in the morning and Harrods or Selfridges in the afternoon.

PegasusReturns · 13/03/2022 11:49

The outnet. I often get Badgley Mischka or Marchessa from there.

takealettermsjones · 13/03/2022 11:50

Go to Quiz, buy one for £100, spend the rest of the money on a holiday 😃

AllAmericanGirl · 13/03/2022 11:53

If I were to get married now I'd buy a needle and thread dress.

katscamel · 13/03/2022 11:53

Adrianna Pappel ( not sure of spelling) does lovely evening dresses

Strokethefurrywall · 13/03/2022 11:54

I bought this on Amazon $50!
Also use Davids Bridal a lot, they’ve got an excellent selection!

I got mine from Needle & Thread. Many of their dresses are pastel coloured, but they also have some beautiful deep red ones. I think most of their non-wedding dresses cost less than £500 so well within your budget.

bananaramadramas · 13/03/2022 11:57

I would look at needle and thread for myself as I looove their dresses and am just waiting for an occasion to buy one!

Harrods have a good selection.

worriedmum2022 · 13/03/2022 12:22

My friend is getting married she went to a local dress agency and bought a secondhand dress for £50 it's lovely she was adamant she wouldn't waste thousands for one day

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 13/03/2022 12:26

Maybe too far to travel but I would recommend bella Figura. Made to measure, choose your fabric and style. Fantastic service.
You could tie it in with a weekend away! Grin

Do you have a local seamstress? They may be able to make you something beautiful and to your measurements…

Oriunda · 13/03/2022 13:15

Woooo boutique on Instagram/ Etsy. She makes ready to wear based on Givenchy originals, and also made to order. Check out the Blanche tulle dress which is perfect and costs £175. Was made for Terry de Havilland photo shoot.

Oriunda · 13/03/2022 13:19

Link here. She makes bespoke so check out the Terry dress on her Instagram. www.woowooboutique.com/collections/dresses/products/blanche-star-maxi-dress-one-size

I'm another Needle and Thread lover. I mean, not that I'm thinking of chucking DH or anything, but just for one day in a Needle and Thread full-length frock... It's a tricky one Grin
