Does anyone have any recommendations of board games to play with husband and / or friends of an evening please.

OP posts:

We like ticket to ride, and five crowns. Ticket to ride has various versions, some of which are an expansion pack so not the full game. Go for USA or Europe for the first one.

Zapx · 10/03/2022 20:20

How many people will be there in total?

WhatyoutalkingaboutWillis · 10/03/2022 20:20

For a light hearted game that's good for a laugh, Herd Mentality is fun.

skippy67 · 10/03/2022 20:22

Articulate is good with a group.

Unanananana · 10/03/2022 20:51

Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Splendor and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza are faves in our house.

StoneofDestiny · 10/03/2022 21:25

Rummykubs

weaselwords · 10/03/2022 21:29

If there are 4 of you, pandemic is excellent. Otherwise, ticket to ride and carcassone.

Hazelnut18 · 10/03/2022 21:42

Another vote for ticket to ride or herd mentality.

Fairislefandango · 10/03/2022 21:43

Azul. Dh and I have had it for about 18 months and we still play it about 4 times a week! I've never got so much use out of a board game before!

AnathemaPulsifer · 10/03/2022 21:47

Carcassonne is the best two player game I know.

Meadowland · 10/03/2022 22:11

Mexican Train is great !

SkankingMopoke · 10/03/2022 22:11

Will everyone be a little merry? If so, I second Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. Poetry for Neanderthals would also be fun after a glass or two. (Disclaimer: neither are board games in a traditional 'uses a dice' kinda way, in fact Taco Cat is a card game, but still good for after dinner-type entertainment)

Notagoodnight · 10/03/2022 22:16

Adding to the above
Lords of Waterdeep. Plays equally awesomely with 2 as with 5. Plays more people with expansions
Splendor
Personally I'd pick Sagrada over Azul
Sushi go
Carcassone even better with the inns and cathedrals expansion
Dominion
Deep sea adventure

It really depends want you want.

Settlers of Catan is a good strategic one for 3-4. This is often our go to. Our 10 year old loves it as it has similarities to mine craft.

Pandemic or forbidden dessert are good cooperative games.

Cards against humanity (family version) is great for laughs. Original version pushes boundaries in terms of what’s appropriate to laugh about so may not be right for you but can be hilarious with the right company. We veto some cards though (jimi saville one - some things just shouldn’t be used for laughs).

Exploding kittens is a great card game.

Throw throw burrito mixes fast pace card game with an element of dodge ball so fun and active.

Azul and Segrada are similar but good - quick games. Get more strategic the more you play.

We love Ticket to Ride too.

oioimatey · 10/03/2022 22:29

Forbidden Island/Forbidden Desert are excellent co-operative games. Easy to learn, hours of fun.

Santorini is a good one. I hear great things about Azul. Carcassonne is excellent, although best played with two.

Codenames is great fun in a group.

Ultimate Wearwolf is very entertaining, too.

hedgehogger1 · 10/03/2022 22:31

Articulate for a tipsy evening with friends :)

Boxowine · 10/03/2022 22:31

Backgammon is nice for two players.

DigitalGoat · 10/03/2022 23:16

We discovered Carcassonne at the start of the pandemic and it got us through - some great family nights in. Also long term fan of Ticket to Ride, Kingdom Builder and Small World.

5foot5 · 11/03/2022 00:34

@weaselwords

We got Pandemic for Christmas 2019. Tried it three times and found it impossibly difficult.

And then of course the real pandemic happened so we never really fancied it again!

We have been enjoying Chronicles of Crime. There are different variants but 1900 is our favourite so far. It is a cooperative game

JaceLancs · 11/03/2022 01:38

We are old school and love things like poleconomy, risk, escape from colditz, buccaneer, go, mine a million, scoop etc
With adult DC cards against humanity and escape room home versions go well
Sometimes it’s just rummikub, scrabble or card games like canasta

Foodyscrummyfoodie · 11/03/2022 01:41

Mexican train, quirkle, rummikub

danishkids · 11/03/2022 03:36

King of Tokyo (the box looks weird but it’s a really fun simple game)

Settlers

Splendor

Sequence

Carcassone

Castles- takes ages to set up but is a fun strategy game.

Taboo

danishkids · 11/03/2022 03:38
