Does anyone have any recommendations of board games to play with husband and / or friends of an evening please.

Zombicide and zombicide black plauge for 1-6 players

Pandemic
...are all good for adults who are new to games I think.

Cards against humanity was very 2015, ours has gathered dust as the humour/novelty has kind of worn off with that one now.

Second the suggestion for poetry for Neanderthals. We also love Dobble, it's like the card game snap but with more different varieties to play it.

Scrawl is brilliant. A funnier version of Pictionary.

Jask is good for 4+ players

Scattegories and Linkee are good fun and easy to play.

We got given Carcassone for Christmas and LOVE it. I’m already eyeing up the expansion packs.

Herd Mentality is a lot of fun and can play up to 20 players! If you want something slightly more 'thinky' try 3 Wise Words (or the original version, Head Hackers).

Magic the gathering card game

You can get a party night set for up to five players to help you learn the basics

Maybe not so much a game for a group of friends, but Calico is really good. Very easy to pick up (and also set up!) but very strategic. At the same time, I find it quite relaxing.

Another vote for Forbidden Island, co-op game so you all work toward the same goal with each player having a specific skill set. For every move you make, the island also makes a move to sink so you are racing against the island. We also have Castle Panic which again is co-op strategy game.

Settlers of Catan you play against each other. Can be ruthless.

Exploding Kittens is a lot of fun.
Pictionary

We got Pandemic Christmas of 2019 and somehow never opened the box. Too real. But I am hoping to crack it open this summer.

For any games mentioned, go onto YouTube and watch people demonstrate how to play. Much easier than trying to read instructions.
