Would you even want to survive a nuclear fallout?

Seeing loads of threads about bunkers and prepping etc etc

I have a friend who talks about this a lot and is deeply unimpressed with my stance of "honestly, I wouldn't want to survive the apocalypse anyway".

I like good cheese, and chocolate, I like wasting time on the Internet and going on holiday. I like hot showers.
The apocalypse sounds like it sucks. I haven't the first clue how to season a rat roasted on a stick, and cockroaches scare me. Camping is shit.

AIBU to think that in the case of a nuclear fallout, just instantly being wiped out sounds like the far nicer option?

Absolutely bloody not.

Agriculture would fail and there would be mass starvation on a global scale.

ComDummings · 01/03/2022 13:29

No way

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/03/2022 13:29

Life would be unbelievably grim for the poor saps who weren't wiped out.

Xpologog · 01/03/2022 13:30

Nope.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/03/2022 13:30

No. I'd much rather be instantly wiped out in the epicentre of the blast than survive for a few weeks before dying of radiation sickness, or surviving long term in a world where people will be fighting over food, there will be no infrastructure and you have to fight or die.

Florelei · 01/03/2022 13:31

No, I’d rather be dead.

MintyFreshBreath · 01/03/2022 13:32

It just sounds awful to be the ones left behind. You might as well be dead if you’re not instantly killed so why not just get it over and done quickly? No need to starve to death or worse.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 01/03/2022 13:32

I watched Threads at school. If that's remotely accurate (which I believe it is, particularly re nuclear winter) then surviving a serious nuclear incident is definitely not something I'd want to go through.

ParisLondonTokyoSlough · 01/03/2022 13:32

I would if my children were alive because I absolutely would want to stay alive so that I could do my best to show them that there is good in life and living with people - even in barren land we still have relationships and love.

But if my children were (God forbid) gone, then not really. But I probably would still keep going out of human instinct to survive

Traumdeuter · 01/03/2022 13:33

YANBU at all. I vaguely understand a desire to preserve life where possible but fuck no. It’d be like The Road.

mydogisthebest · 01/03/2022 13:35

No I definitely would not want to survive. I honestly can't believe anyone would.

If we had enough warning (don't suppose we would though) me and DH would go to London in the hope that that is where they would hit and we would, I assume, die instantly

KeepYaHeadUp · 01/03/2022 13:35

The Road makes me 100% certain that surviving something like a nuclear holocaust with children would be worse than all being instantly wiped out. The thought of leaving them alone if I was dead or dying is unbearable

Yes, I would want to survive.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/03/2022 13:36

I’m with you OP, I’m walking out side with my family. Your friend needs to watch Threads

Mmmmmmbop90 · 01/03/2022 13:37

Stupid question I’m sure but how do we know what it would be like? I feel I need more info before I drive into the mushroom cloud with my kids!

toastfiend · 01/03/2022 13:38

Nope, I hope if it does happen on a big scale that my family and I are wiped out immediately. I've no desire to attempt to eke out a miserable existence on the charred, radioactive remains of this earth and I'm hopeless at anything practical and an extremely slow runner so the looters and gangs that would form would take me out pretty quickly anyway.

If anything does happen and that type of "life" is all I see ahead of me then I'll be jumping off the nearest high thing or heading to my parents' for their shotgun.

Nice, cheery thinking for a Tuesday afternoon, this... Grin

garlicandsapphires · 01/03/2022 13:38

Yes I would. It's madness I know but I'm curious about what life is like post nuclear war. Unimaginably horrific I assume and I'd probably wish I hadn't survived but still, yes I'd want to try. I don't think I'd survive very long though.

SickAndTiredAgain · 01/03/2022 13:39

Definitely wouldn’t want to survive. I have absolutely no wish to have anything to do with it.
The woman who stays behind in the CDC at the end of S1 of the walking dead - that’s me, that’s the choice I’d have made.

LividLaVidaLoca · 01/03/2022 13:41

It would be quick and it would be your choice.

Think the end of Thelma & Louise.

(This is NOT a great time to have read too many post-apocalyptic stories, no sir. You wouldn’t want that for your family, not in the slightest.)

Have you never read anything/watched anything about it? I feel like this is something we all know would be an absolute nightmare.
BoogieFeet · 01/03/2022 13:42

YANBU I don’t even like camping and I’ve read/watched enough post apocalyptic fiction to be certain that being killed outright is the best I can hope for if the nukes start falling.

Gardeningcreature · 01/03/2022 13:43

No I’d rather be dead.
Humans have shown how utterly selfish they are. It would be every man and woman for themselves with survival of the fittest.
Seriously just seeing how people behave and reading threads in here I have no doubt in my mind that the majority of people would not cope with the aftermath at all.
Most people could hardly manage the covid pandemic, let alone a nuclear holocaust.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 01/03/2022 13:43

I asked my DP a few days ago what he would do, his reply was head towards where its going to hit, he would rather us get wiped out in seconds rather than deal with the fallout.

I agree with him but think I would try to make sure my DCs mainly (and us) survive. Even though I know the aftermath would be awful and I agree, what's the point in surviving? I just think survival mode would kick in. Couldn't imagine walking towards danger knowing it will kill my DCs. Not that the alternative is much better.

The world is depressing and I feel guilty bringing DC in to this world tbh.

Cheekypeach · 01/03/2022 13:44

No. It wouldn’t be a ‘brave new world’ of singing round a campfire and hunky men spear fishing while women wash clothes in a stream. It would be awful - cold, painful, uncomfortable, boring, relentless, scary. Not to mention the landscape which would be beyond depressing and dangerous.
