Would you even want to survive a nuclear fallout?

Seeing loads of threads about bunkers and prepping etc etc

I have a friend who talks about this a lot and is deeply unimpressed with my stance of "honestly, I wouldn't want to survive the apocalypse anyway".

I like good cheese, and chocolate, I like wasting time on the Internet and going on holiday. I like hot showers.
The apocalypse sounds like it sucks. I haven't the first clue how to season a rat roasted on a stick, and cockroaches scare me. Camping is shit.

AIBU to think that in the case of a nuclear fallout, just instantly being wiped out sounds like the far nicer option?

My life is shit at the moment.
Bring on the apocalypse.

Darbs76 · 01/03/2022 20:16

No as it might be me and Putin’s family left. No thanks!

On a serious note I’ve felt very on edge about this for a couple of weeks. I’m not normally someone to be anxious about things I can’t control. But this feels different

bluetongue · 01/03/2022 20:25

@Youmadeyourbed

No would not. I grew up during the Cold War on the doorstep of what was Europe's biggest power station. We were assured at school that we would be one of the prime targets in a nuclear war. I took great comfort in the fact that it would be all over immediately. Watching Threads, Where the Wind Blows, and those awful 70s infomercials about what to do in the event of nuclear strike, assured me I would not want to survive one.
Were those ‘Protect and Survive’ infomercials actually televised in the UK?

I went through a bit of a rabbit hole a while ago after watching Threads and found them grimly fascinating.

peaceanddove · 01/03/2022 20:25

God forbid. I think I'm slumming it if the hotel I'm staying at doesn't have a pillow menu FFS.

bluetongue · 01/03/2022 20:27

@Fimofriend

Surviving a nuclear war didn't seem very nice in Nevile Shute's "On The Beach"
I live in Adelaide so that would be me. Wonder if Scomo would manage to fuck up the cyanide pill rollout too Grin
HailAdrian · 01/03/2022 20:30

The world is depressing and I feel guilty bringing DC in to this world tbh.

Me too. We're at the mercy of fucking psychopaths.

DiscordandRhyme · 01/03/2022 20:38

We live near a marine base so likely a target.

If SHTF I'd rather go quickly.

RishiRich · 01/03/2022 20:41

I've bought a bottle of potassium iodide tablets, just in case. Order of preference:

  1. Nuclear weapons are not ever deployed because everyone has enough sense to know they're an evil idea that should never have seen the light of day, let alone be used.

  2. Far enough away that it's relatively low impact.

  3. Vaporised with my loved ones in the first strike.

  4. Close enough that I die horribly of radiation poisoning.

  5. Somehow surviving a nuclear war and living in a post-apocalyptic world.

The likelihood of 2-5 happening is so remote that I'm not particularly concerned. I'll pop the tablets in the medicine box and throw them out in 5 years' time laughing at myself.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 01/03/2022 20:45

If it's any consolation, consuming red wine can help prevent radiation sickness.

onanotherday · 01/03/2022 20:54

If my children were alive, then yes. But remember how grim Threads was too.

SickAndTiredAgain · 01/03/2022 20:59

Well now I’m definitely out. I don’t like red wine. Nuclear wasteland and being forced to drink red wine?? That’s a step too far.

Any chance a nicely chilled Sauvignon blanc helps at all?

Oh god then I am destined to survive Confused

Yep. I'm pregnant with my second, and I've gone from feeling excited to just feeling guilty. If we get lucky and this doesn't escalate into anything even more horrific than it already is now, or even in my life time, something terrible is going to happen in theirs, isn't it really. Not to mention climate change to worry about too. We're headed in one direction on this planet and it's not a good one. Cheery!
Dottdoo · 01/03/2022 21:14

@Yebbie the other way to think about it though is that we are providing the future generation who will solve these problems!

VincentLegrand · 01/03/2022 21:24

Not RTFT but I'm sure someone will have already quoted the son in When the wind blows
"If London cops it, I'll cop it ..."

I'm in my 40s and spent my childhood scared of nuclear war. Trying not to give it anymore headspace than necessary now.

Porcupineintherough · 01/03/2022 21:28

I was traumatised by "Threads" as a child (funny, I wonder how many of us that makes, I always thought I was the only one) and now live in Sheffield. These days I take comfort from the the fact that, if the worst happens, it will be over almost instantly for us.

Hamilfan · 01/03/2022 21:56

Would I fuck consume iodine tablets

I'd drink 3 bottles of wine and let the cloud consume me

Quite!

The people who want to live through a nuclear disaster are the sort of people who are happy to live as a severed head in a jar

No thanks

Whatafustercluck · 01/03/2022 22:12

@petcurls regarding 'targets' there was a cold war list drawn up that hasn't changed that much of top ten UK targets. It ranges from population centres to military bases/ communications hubs.

There is also a website I believe, though I've not looked at that.

And an estate agent not so long ago drew up a map of the safest places in the UK if nuclear war broke out. Turns out that Skegness, North Wales and the Highlands are worth a look if you're planning to survive.

I know way too much about this, but I'm pretty obsessive about some things that scare me. I find it comforting to research things properly - it invariably puts my mind at ease. And I'm not seriously planning to sell up and move anywhere, but I do know how I might enable my family to survive a 'low grade' attack. Wink

I'd love to see a link to that map. Skegness!

I have a well in my garden, I might need to think about uncovering it!

spleencoffin · 01/03/2022 22:22

Hell yes!

Get to try and be some savage apocalyptic heroine. Got my outfit planned and everything

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 01/03/2022 22:27

No I’d want me and the family wiped out instantly. I’ve watched The Road. Fucking terrifying.

Thanks Cluster. Definitely worth digging my well out and buying in some cans of soup.

Whatafustercluck · 01/03/2022 22:41

Don't forget the battery operated/ wind up radio and plenty of bottled water. 😁
