AIBU to think British Airways has had a (Russian) cyber attack?

I’ve been unable to get onto www.ba.com

I’ve just heard on the radio that the airline’s computer systems are down, Terminal 5 is in chaos and agents are having to manually check passengers in.

Bearing in mind that Aeroflot has been banned from UK airspace (and private planes with Russian owners/passengers also now banned), is it likely that the Russians have made a cyber attack on British Airways?

Yes it has Sad

iheartmybeachhut · 25/02/2022 21:06
Hmm
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/02/2022 21:07

Oh please.

This tends to happen every half term.

Pantsomime · 25/02/2022 21:07

This wouldn’t surprise me one but, I really hope not but the Russian’s/ cells they allowed to operate there, have been responsible for some of the worst cyber attacks - let’s hope planes don’t start dropping out of the sky, it’s horrendous

iheartmybeachhut · 25/02/2022 21:08

Where is the evdience ? I want to be proven wrong.

Darbs76 · 25/02/2022 21:08

If you google it no evidence that it’s a cyber attack at this point.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 25/02/2022 21:09

Nothing on the Heathrow website to indicate major problems but I can't get onto the BA website either.

Agree it always seems to happen in school holidays though so could be unrelated.

PAFMO · 25/02/2022 21:09

In fairness, the website has been shit for months. It's absolutely shockingly bad regarding functionality.
Though it might be Putin I suppose.

ABitBesotted · 25/02/2022 21:10

I think we can orchestrate our own fuckups perfectly well

ballsdeep · 25/02/2022 21:10

This is exactly what putin wants.... Fear

mumofEandE · 25/02/2022 21:11

@mumofEandE

Yes it has Sad
Sorry meant yes it is (down) not yes it has (been hacked) !
SugarAndCoffee · 25/02/2022 21:11

Could be I guess. Could just be the standard technicial problems.

HaggisBurger · 25/02/2022 21:11

I said same on Twitter a few hours ago 🤷🏻‍♀️ Who knows but seems big coincidence to me ….

lapasion · 25/02/2022 21:15

Their website is pretty rubbish and they had a data leak a few years ago. I wouldn’t pin it on the Russians straight away.

AlternativePerspective · 25/02/2022 21:19

Well, I suspect a lot of companies will use this opportunity to blame the Russians to cover up their own shit systems.

Much as they blamed covid for their shit customer service. Except now WFH has ended and customer service is still shit.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 25/02/2022 21:22

That was my first thought when I saw the news.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 25/02/2022 21:24

BA systems are shocking at the moment- probably getting their excuses in early for this week's baggage debacle

ImInStealthMode · 25/02/2022 21:26

This is far from the first time BA have had a complete systems failure. I don't think there's any point in speculation.

Quornflakegirl · 25/02/2022 21:30

Dh works for a city council that had a Russian cyber attack a month ago. All their systems were down for weeks, it was a nightmare to get basic things done. I think there will be a lot more of this in the near future.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 25/02/2022 21:30

@PAFMO

In fairness, the website has been shit for months. It's absolutely shockingly bad regarding functionality. Though it might be Putin I suppose.
If Vlad has compiled a "Highly Functional Things That Need My Intervention To Make Them Fucked Up" list, I'm thinking the BA website will be some way down it.
TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 25/02/2022 21:37

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow could be a retaliation for our Aeroflot ban though?

P.s we call him Vlad too... Mad Vlad

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 25/02/2022 21:38

Tesco also had a computer aystem error and hundreds of home deliveries were cancelled all over the place. Was that Russia too?

LeggyLinda · 25/02/2022 21:39

“Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.”

Yes, I imagine BA are on a target list for cyber hacking. But other targets would be higher up in that list (and they seem fine).

Don’t forget the BA website is notoriously flakey and this is a busy time

justasking111 · 25/02/2022 21:43

Terminal 5 was a terminal disaster on day one. It's a disastrous system
