Anyone been scammed like this

Shinydiscoballs1 · 24/02/2022 17:26

Had a call from a local number asking about my car accident. I just thought it was the usual and hung up but they called back from a different local number and said my full name and address?
How have they got this info? Anyone had similar?

This sounds like a scam. Probably obtained information from a previous phishing attempt. Such as an sms regarding a missed delivery or similar.
Unless you've been in an accident they're purely trying their luck. Any company would be happy for you to end the call and phone them back. I would make sure I went on the insurance companies correct website and called from a different phone!
Scams are getting very sophisticated and scary these days x

Sounds like a moment for my (sharp) elderly mother's favourite reply drama:

An accident?
I've been in an accident?
What!

Oh, no!
Oh that's terrible!
Am I seriously hurt?
George!
George! I've been in an accident.

Quick - get the car - we must go to the hospital as quickly as possible...'

(I don't know what it does at the call-centre but it leaves us smiling anyway)

Rocketpants50 · 24/02/2022 17:45

Oh I get these a lot. My car was involved in an accident a while back, very minor. I feel that at some point I forgot to tick a box and my details were sold on. I

Dixiechickonhols · 24/02/2022 17:45

If you’ve had an accident op then people and companies do sell info on - eg your insurers, car hire company, car repair garage etc. If you’ve not had an accident it’s just fishing for info.

Hellocatshome · 24/02/2022 17:46

There are so many ways they could get this information I cant even begin to tell you the all. Honestly its just easier to assume these days that your name, address and probably email address, DOB etc is public information.

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 24/02/2022 17:46

There are a number of scams going round where they have managed to get some accurate data from hacking.
The best thing to do is hang up, then look up the official number of the company they say they're from. That is, if it's a company you've dealt with before. If it isn't, probably a scam so ignore.

Shinydiscoballs1 · 24/02/2022 17:47

I've had loads of the cold call ones about accidents but them knowing my details threw me a bit
I have been in a couple of accidents but 10 years ago

Had one just last week. Were you involved in a accident lately?

you tell me mate, you rang Phone down

StandingOvulation · 24/02/2022 17:48

Some scsmmers have systems where they can mimic your local area code as it means you're more likely to answer the call.

Unconscionable arseholes the lot of them.

My sis does this. I love it!

She also asks when she was in the accident they say well you haven’t yet. She says “oh how can you be so cruel. Why would you say that?” They hang up pretty sharpish.

She gets a lot of these calls 😂

OP sadly I just assume my info has been sold even though I always opt out.

My Gran used to reply "Yes, it was awful- I died you know" which was very effective at clearing the line!

Theunamedcat · 24/02/2022 18:22

They tried it on me I didn't even have a car at the time

Cold calling is legal, I don’t want to talk to you, put phone down

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 24/02/2022 18:32

Are they still doing this one? But, ahem, pedestrian isn’t it? I’ve also lost count of the amount of times my name and address has been given to the National Crime Agency an my arrest is imminent. In fact they called me on Friday gone, it was a welcome distraction from Storm Eunice and worriedly watching my fence panels and the walnut tree whipping around alarmingly close to my house. I asked them where they were calling me from, they said 100 Parliament Street, London. I asked them ‘Oh yeah, what’s the weather like there then?’ . They hung up. Ho hum.

They can't pass your details on. Not unless you have specifically agreed for them to use your data like this. Otherwise it would be a breach of GDPR.
dodobookends · 24/02/2022 18:45

I usually say, oh yes, that's right. Which one are you calling about?

Dixiechickonhols · 24/02/2022 18:51

caranations it definitely was done, used to be lucrative sideline not anymore.

Hospital staff used to do it too.

Echobelly · 24/02/2022 18:59

I once kept one of these guys of the phone for quite some time saying yes, a falling satellite had destroyed my car....

billybear · 24/02/2022 19:04

this week along i have had washing machine breakdown cover 5 times/ funeral plan 3 times/car crash once.plus more i cant remember i block at least 6 numbers a day on my mobile,it must be a terrible job they do, but i get fed up with the calls

HappyHouseWitch · 24/02/2022 19:48

Yep I've had this car insurance one. Got my first name and address right but surname incorrect. Bloke got really arsey when I asked him to repeat himself. Had a few further calls along similar lines from area codes all over country. Just put the phone down/ignored and blocked until they stopped. I have a flurry of nuisance calls, texts and emails every so often then a couple of months without any
