Very concerned about Russian invasion of Ukraine

What does this mean for the rest of the world? Isn't it very likely that we will need to intervene with military action ? And if we do, is Russia going to start military action against whoever intervened in Ukraine ? Putin has threatened to, basically, as far as I understand.

This sounds really, really bad. What does everyone else think ? Or am I just going to the absolute worst case. What other scenarios could play out ? Very concerned about Ukraine, but also what this will mean for the rest of us.

Plenty of threads on this already.

howdoesthisworktoday · 24/02/2022 12:03

I'm only seeing one. Where most people are bashing the OP. So not really that relevant. Maybe I've missed the others !

I think you need to calm down. Also with all due respect to mumsnetters this is not the place for incisive political analysis. I suggest you do some reading. It's being well covered in the press.

Cognoscenti · 24/02/2022 12:07

In a nutshell, no one knows. From what I gather (and my opinion) - military action against the UK is very unlikely. Cyberwar and responses to sanctions to make our lives more difficult/certain commodities more expensive - absolutely yes.
Bear in mind, however, that Putin has shown himself to be a madman drunk on power - nothing would surprise me.
FWIW, even though Ukraine isn't a NATO member, I think the UK and NATO allies ought to get involved and not watch them be overthrown at the mercy of a complete lunatic.

Kassle · 24/02/2022 12:09

You are right to be concerned.

The chance of any of our children enjoying the type of life most of us in the west have enjoyed since WW2 ended is slim to none right now.

Its ok. Boris will tell Vlad that he has been a very naughty boy and that will solve everything.
Viviennemary · 24/02/2022 12:10

Sorry I was snappy. But yes it's very worrying.

Worriedaboutethics · 24/02/2022 12:10

@Kassle

Agree not just this it’s brexit climate we all need to change .

Cocomarine · 24/02/2022 12:10

Oh come on, you’ve only seen one thread and that bashing the OP?

YABU to not look a bit harder by lunchtime on the day of a massive invasion.

Hint: number one thread in “trending now” all bloody morning has been an ever longer thread with plenty of further links and intelligent comment. Apart from the poster virtue signalling about her donations to Ukrainian animal rescue.

CornishGem1975 · 24/02/2022 12:11

I am very concerned. For Ukraine, for us. For everyone. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

And dismayed. After the shitshow of Brexit, and COVID, and our cost of living crisis...the last thing we need as a country is to be at war.

kazza446 · 24/02/2022 12:12

You are not being unreasonable. I am sick with worry today that this is going to implode into another world war.

Cognoscenti · 24/02/2022 12:20

Are those who are worried, worrying about the UK coming under physical attack? I can become anxious quite easily, but the only threat to physical safety I'm concerned about is to those in Ukraine, it's barbaric what Putin has done.
It is a genuine question, as the thought of the financial repercussions for the rest of the world is also worrying, and I'm not sure what is worrying people most.

Yes I'm actually worried that's where it ends up. Have you heard what Putin said ?
OP posts:
howdoesthisworktoday · 24/02/2022 12:25

@Cognoscenti the worry is that if NATO intervenes, Russia will retaliate in a big way. Ie: nukes.

Yes, I am worried about that. They certainly have the capability.

What's is with the thread policing on here? It's significant, worrying news and perfectly natural for people to want to talk about it and ask for others' views on it.
howdoesthisworktoday · 24/02/2022 12:30

@KeepYaHeadUp of course! I am reading the news etc. but still interested to see what people are thinking.

OP posts:
Cognoscenti · 24/02/2022 12:31

@howdoesthisworktoday Yes, but he is also a fan of sabre rattling, he will always say something incendiary to try to scare everyone else into backing down. It is a scary time though, I do see it's worrying for a lot of people.
I try to think about it logically when I'm worried, in that:

  • It's no secret to the rest of the world that the UK has CASD and anti-aircraft missiles
  • Putin is fully aware of MAD, if Russia fires a nuke at us, every NATO member retaliates immediately against them

The USSR developed Tsar Bomba back in 1961, they have always had an impressive nuclear capability, but I genuinely don't think it'll come to that. At the very least, on top of so many other reasons, it would gravely affect Russia too, and at the very least we know Putin really doesn't want that.

Cognoscenti · 24/02/2022 12:33

Sorry I take a long time to type, there have been a few posts since I started! I'm not making fun of anyone for being worried, I completely see why. Just wasn't sure if it was about physical warfare against us, or the cost of living (e.g. fuel and such) increasing as a result, among other things.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/02/2022 12:35

Honestly? I think it's a bit rude to be playing at disaster scenarios for us while actual people are busy packing up their families and piling out of Kyiv before the Russian tanks arrive.

This really reads like a 'calm down dear'. Why on earth is MN not a place for incisive political analysis? I have a phd, have been on MN for 15 years and have read many, many well informed discussions on here. In fact I often come on here AFTER reading a news headlines to get a good range of intelligent opinions. Obviously there some silly stuff too. But why do you assume it's not possible to discuss things seriously on here? Is it because we are a bunch of mummies?

Even if this thread were chit chat about the Ukraine situation, what would be wrong with that? People everywhere since the beginning of time have processed their thoughts about events by chatting to friends.

KeepYaHeadUp · 24/02/2022 12:40

@howdoesthisworktoday - I think you've misread my post. I'm suggesting it's perfectly acceptable for you to post here to see what others think.

Totally agree with this. I don't like to only get my news from the news. Sometimes it's all sensationalised.

I'm also not an expert on international relations, so sometimes I find it hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the usual news outlets.

when reading a discussion on a site like MN, you get a wide range of opinions, which can help you make up a picture. Not just news led.

It is terrifying
I am worried sick for the people in Ukraine
I am worried sick nobody will help them but at the same time if we help then we're all screwed

I've done nothing but I obsess over this for weeks
