Wallpaper 185... per roll?!

happychappy912 · 16/02/2022 19:38

Watching dream home makeovers (never seen it before) and they were using wallpaper that costs £185 per roll!! Confused
Do people spend this much on wallpaper? Aibu to think it could be spent on something else? Obviously each to their own and it's your money spend it on what you like but wow I had no idea this was a thing Blush

Wallpaper is so dated.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/02/2022 20:37

Apparently Boris' was £840 per roll... Shock

LittleGwyneth · 16/02/2022 20:40

Feature walls are the work of the devil. Do it all or do none of it. But yes, I would spend that much on wallpaper if I were doing a room and it were the perfect print. Wallpaper is magic.

Tell me you don't know anything about interiors without telling me you don't know anything about interiors...
TheCraicDealer · 16/02/2022 20:46

I paid about that for our downstairs loo wallpaper, and that was with 20% off over Black Friday. It has opera boxes with cartoon people sitting looking at you while you're on the loo. First saw it five years previously in a hotel in Paris and loved it, so when we moved to this house I took the plunge.

I don't think I could personally stomach spending the same sort of money per roll to paper a large room, but each to their own!

I love this one but no idea what kind of room it would go in!

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 16/02/2022 20:50

Why is it so expensive? Is it all hand painted? How can that be accurate enough to allow matching left and right? Are the materials really rare and expensive?

StubbleTurnips · 16/02/2022 20:53

Wallpaper is my weakness, downstairs loo cost an eye watering figure from Cole & Son, as did our kitchen…. We do have cheaper ones too.
Last house had lots of Osborne papers.
The quality of them is something else, much smoother and easier to apply.

Wingedharpy · 16/02/2022 21:01

I paid nothing like that for my woodchip!Wink

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/02/2022 21:08

I don't have any wallpaper in my house. I do have two blinds made from Timorous Beasties fabric though, I can't remember what it cost but it was well worth the price. I used to work around the corner from the shop when I lived in London, and used to lust after their designs on my way to the sandwich shop.

Wallpaper in toilets 🤢 it's like when carpets in toilets used to be a thing!

Bathroom!

I've just done something similar on one wall in ours... I love it, but can see it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea...

It should be £185 for a three roll box (but I got it in the sale) from Mind the Gap.

We have expensive paper in one of our bathrooms. Previous owners had only recently put in the bathroom so I wasn't going to replace it but the suite was white, the tiles were beige (but real marble) and they had painted the walls magnolia so it was dull. I got a fabulous wallpaper in a Black Friday sale, we only needed 4 rolls. It has transformed the bathroom for a few hundred quid and shows off the beautiful marble tiles much better than the magnolia paint. Far better for the environment than replacing a new bathroom.

If you’re doing up the spare room with cheap carpet and a trip to IKEA, not so much.

I disagree, interior decoration works best when you mix high and low, just like fashion. Some might choose to spend on wallpaper, some on a fabulous chair, some on a piece of art. Every room in our house has something extravagant and designer, something from IKEA, something second-hand and something high street.

Of course it isnt!

The first thing to go in this house was the bathroom carpet, even the most careful loo user can have the odd accident and lino/tiles are so much easier to clean so it makes sense.

But unless you live in a house where people habitually wipe their bums on the wall, I see no issue with wallpaper in there!

Now I want this on our bedroom ceiling. Mumsnet isn't usually such an expensive habit...

Jeune · 16/02/2022 21:39

Not to be boring but isn't this the same question as why do some people feel it's ok to spend £50k on a car when others spend less than £10k .... I; my case never more than £3k! It's a function of how much money you have, how much pleasure you get from your purchase, what you think is morally acceptable etc etc etc .... all cars/wallpapers etc are equal but some are WAY MORE equal than others....depending on your philosophy this is the stuff of revolution, revulsion or revelation. Me? Love Timourous Beasties but would rather make my own version.

Jeune · 16/02/2022 21:40

Now if they made a special MN 'nice ham' design I could be tempted #memoryofanelephant

Mine is from the same place…but parrots 😀

That's so cool, @CorsicaDreaming!

Doesn't wallpaper in a bathroom get damp though?

Stillcrikey · 17/02/2022 12:13

I am lusting after this one for our downstairs loo.

I’d absolutely have that in the loo if I didn’t have a shower

Having said that im sure I’ve seen clear perspex for bathroom walls that you could put that behind

JaninaDuszejko · 18/02/2022 09:30

We put decorator's varnish over the wallpaper in our bathroom. It's fantastic stuff, I can highly recommend.

viques · 18/02/2022 09:39

@LBOCS2

I have House of Hackney wallpaper in our sitting room and downstairs loo, which I love. Usual price is between £125-185 a roll but I got it at a sample sale so I did not spend that sort of money on it!
Love HoH, wondering if £245 is an inflated price for a deckchair, an investment, or just something I need........
Onlyforcake · 18/02/2022 09:44

I think they just counted how many cours are on that and used that as the price. Way too fussy and headache inducing for me. But if you like it and you're not intending to sell you might as well.

MatildaTheCat · 18/02/2022 09:45

It’s like anything, you can pay a lot or a little. For those who think it’s wasteful don’t go to a decent interior shop and start going through all the sample books. There are SO many absolutely beautiful designs. I have several feature walls and they’ve been up for a really long time and are still regularly admired so if you choose carefully they don’t date.
