Aibu to ask what to wear!

NC for this

Ahhhhh I have drinks on Friday this week and I have no idea what to wear. It’s just casual after work drinks with colleagues; all women, all seem really nice, we all wfh but they’re a bit younger than me and all seem stylish on zoom calls etc ( and I haven’t met any of them yet in person)

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight and I’m trying to get out the rut I was in. I have NO IDEA what to wear. I’m now a size 16 (was 24)

I was thinking skinny jeans, a stripy top and white trainers? Not comfy in heels really but I just have no clue what to wear to feel good or look good.

All help gratefully received!

Do you have smart flats rather than trainers? and some sort of blouse might be nice? your outfit may be a bit too casual

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 15/02/2022 13:09

Stripes may not make the most of your recent weight loss - congratulations on that btw!
And no trainers imo. Surely a night out deserves shoes??

hopeishere · 15/02/2022 13:35

Totally depends on where you are going. I'd wear trainers (Stan smiths / Veja) on a casual night out. But not to a Michelin restaurant (probably).

Shaynatalie · 15/02/2022 13:49

Thanks for the advice already.

It’s just drinks in the pub. I’m looking for blouses now on ASOS!

My dc tell me everyone wears trainers these days! Met dd's new bf(30) and he was sporting a pair! Shock
White ones +blouse would be fine!!

Nooooo flats and a blouse are really really dated

What you suggest sounds absolutely fine OP! Put on a trench coat and you’ll be grand

Campervangirl · 15/02/2022 13:58

Black skinny jeans, a blouse or shirt that skims your bum and a fake black leather jacket, if you can't wear heels what about a pair of wedges.
Personally I'd wear white trainers with a white shirt, black skinnies and black leather jacket, I'd also wear a black vest top under the white shirt and undo the buttons so you can see the top of the vest.
Have a great time

Do you have a big department store near you that has a personal shopper? You can give info on the event and budget and get things out for you to try on. Far more helpful to have real life help. My local big John Lewis does and i really love the extra support and info. Bought a couple of decent new bras last time as well.and it really makes a difference to an outfit

FairyLightAddict · 15/02/2022 14:07

I always wear trainers.

Nice jeans, trainers and a top

This is bollocks - stripes can be very flattering.

I think your proposed outfit sounds perfectly nice. I always wear trainers - I think people sometimes misunderstand that fashion trainers aren't the same as sports trainers and can be very on trend / smart.

If you're really worried then just go on Zara and buy whatever is in an XXL and appeals to you, but honestly I think you'll look great. Do good hair and some make-up, delicate jewellery, perfect.

MermaidEyes · 15/02/2022 14:42

Go into your nearest city on any given Saturday and you'll see half the population, from 18-50 wearing trainers or Converse. I think jeans sounds fine, but maybe with a nicer top rather than a t-shirt, or a vest/strappy top with a little cardi over for warmth

Aprilx · 15/02/2022 14:48

I wouldn’t wear trainers if I were not sure, you could end up feeling underdressed whereas if you wear flats, ballerina type shoes or similar, then you are not going to feel either under or overdressed, they are sort of neutral.

Jeans and striped top sounds fine.

Sparkletastic · 15/02/2022 14:50

I'd switch up your top but other than that sounds great. A good lipstick can take you a long way

Shaynatalie · 15/02/2022 15:07

Thank you so much for all the advice! It’s tricky when you really don’t have a clue!

Going to stick to trainers and jeans as it’s only in a pub but get a nicer top, and make sure I’ve got decent hair and make up done.

Why were you shocked?

Meeting The Family for the first time isn't a trainer event imo!!

Everyone wears trainers now. Not flats - so dated. And I'm 54.

Cryalot2 · 15/02/2022 21:33

Wear what makes you feel good.
Not sure about the top.
Congratulations on your weight loss, and have a great time.

Jaynesworld · 15/02/2022 21:40

A nice top, skirt/jeans and boots

LadyMaid · 15/02/2022 21:43

Congrats on the weight loss.

I would wear a pair of leggings and a smart longline top.

Or jeans with a t-shirt and a blazer.

Flexitarian · 15/02/2022 21:46

I’d probably wear your outfit with a biker jacket

Why would you judge someone on their shoes?!

Oh stop 😂

Your outfit sounds fine, OP, and if it’s what you’ll feel most comfortable in then great but it may be nice to make a little more effort with your top, as you say.
Well done on your weight loss, that’s amazing 😊 hope you have a great night out!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 15/02/2022 22:01

We were going to a local quite posh pub (for our area!!) wasn't sure he would get in with trainers... Some places do still have a dress code! Didn't think risking it was a wise move on first meeting!!
