To expect house guests to flush a toilet after use?

Hairyfriend · 14/02/2022 23:10

I'm sure I will be berated as its MIL, but would you expect someone that uses your toilet to flush and wash their hands after use, and also wonder why a women hasn't used toilet paper? MIL is British, barely been abroad, so its not a cultural thing that I'm aware of. We are renovating, so living in a tiny caravan- so even by staying outside when she uses the loo, its very obvious she hasn't flushed or washed hands Confused
Thoughts?

I would expect everyone to use toilet paper, flush and wash their hands. Not just house guests.

JazzyBBG · 14/02/2022 23:41

Maybe she thinks the caravan isn't plumbed in 🤣

cheekychaplin · 14/02/2022 23:42

Thoughts?

Why have you asked when we all know that of course she should flush

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 14/02/2022 23:51

Was it a poo that she did?..because maybe she did use toilet paper, and flush and wash her hands (and the poo Just didn't go away with the flush and she is blissfully unaware of the poogate she has created)Grin

blyn72 · 14/02/2022 23:51

Of course she should flush but maybe she just forgot on this occasion.

Bumpy23 · 15/02/2022 00:29

Well- we wouldn't flush a wee in the interest of saving water and our poo tank, it does get flushed regularly but not for a white wee. But if we had guests we would flush. Of course she wash her hands

EricScrantona · 15/02/2022 00:43

Is she a particularly dirty person? Or does she look clean?

I have a family member who doesn't use toilet paper. I find it odd. I remember someone saying "there's no paper in that toilet" and her replying "I don't use it anyway". I don't know if she was simply insinuating she didn't need a poo and didn't mean to say it but having shared a cubicle on many occasions, I know. 🤢 she used to never flush at home to save the environment and unfortunately people have commented on her dirty hands and having seen her show them water, I'm unsure she knows how to wash her hands. She also brags that she can have a shower in less than 4 mins.

I think hand washing is rarer than we think. I see far too many people leave public or work toilets straight after flushing.

Is she used to having a septic?. We have one & follow the rule
If it's brown flush it down, if it's yellow let it mellow

Itsalmostanaccessory · 15/02/2022 01:00

Covid taught us how people in the UK rarely washed their hands.

I have a septic tank. This isnt necessary.
Onesailwait · 15/02/2022 01:51

I didn't say it was necessary I that's what we do

Itsalmostanaccessory · 15/02/2022 03:57

So what as the point in posting?
People with septic tanks use their toilets the same way anyone else does. We flush it and we wash out hands. Asking if the MIL has a septic tank has nothing to do with it because, as you say, this isnt a necessary thing for septic tanks. It is just what you choose to do.

We have a septic and we live on tank water in a country that often has no rain for months on end. We still flush the toilet after every use.
Shamoo · 15/02/2022 05:04

There are quite a lot of people who don’t flush the toilet for a wee at night, so if it’s that I don’t think it’s outrageous not to flush. Anything else is odd. Not using toilet paper is very weird. Not Washing hands is grim but not uncommon.

WallpaperWonder · 15/02/2022 05:13

To be fair to her, if she didn't use toilet paper or flush she doesn't really need to wash her hands.

StarlightLady · 15/02/2022 05:40

Flush and put the lid down.

blyn72 · 15/02/2022 10:51

I still think she may have forgotten to flush or may not want to make a noise with flushing if it is at night. There are also some toilets where you have to flush more than once. I don't know how you can tell that she hasn't washed her hands.

Why not just say generally, "Who didn't flush the toilet?", in a cheerful way?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/02/2022 11:00

She also brags that she can have a shower in less than 4 mins.

That seems pretty normal to me, unless I'm washing my hair I don't need to be in there for long.

That's what I was thinking!
VainAbigail · 15/02/2022 11:11

wonder why a women hasn't used toilet paper

Well this bit is really none of your business but yeh it’s pretty grim to not flush or wash hands but I guess it depends on whether she thinks the toilet is properly connected to sewage pipes etc. She might have some semi logical reasoning behind why she didn’t flush or wash.

she'll just have wet knickers and might smell of pee a bit😂
BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 15/02/2022 11:17

Nowt worse than a damp undercarriage 😭

blyn72 · 15/02/2022 15:33

I rushed out of my toilet earlier before flushing and hand washing, because my 'phone was ringing and I was expecting a 'phone call. This thread has reminded me to go flush and wash now. Thanks.

EricScrantona · 15/02/2022 17:43

@DropYourSword @WhatATimeToBeAlive that's including hair washing. I think she just slaps on wash and go and hopes it rains. I take a lot longer if hair washing.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 15/02/2022 17:50

Well in public toilets if the sinks don't look too clean etc I use my hand gel instead then do them properly at home or wherever, but I imagine that isn't the case with your mil. Maybe she was being absent minded, or she may have washed her hands with just a trickle of water and you didn't hear that bit. Not using paper is a bit weird though.
