When you eat at a restaurant, do you prefer it when they pour the water for you or they give you a jug to pour for yourself?

Just that really. I know this isn’t an AIBU but just wanted to know what others think!

Jug on table please.

Can't bear being fussed over. Same with wine.

Wildrobin · 08/02/2022 19:18

I prefer pouring myself

minipie · 08/02/2022 19:18

Jug and wine bottle please.

Iwannabewherethepeopleare · 08/02/2022 19:18

Jug

MakkaPakkas · 08/02/2022 19:19

Jug

Sunsetsupernova · 08/02/2022 19:20

Both jug and wine bottle on the table or next to it please. I can’t stand it when they keep coming over and topping up your wine after a couple of sips.

sadpapercourtesan · 08/02/2022 19:23

Jug on the table and bog off. I want to talk to my dinner companion without over-solicitous staff hovering around like overlarge wasps

Louisianagumbo · 08/02/2022 19:23

I don't care but I think its usual for them to pour your first drink and then you pour as you go. Unless you order the water with drinks and then I'd expect them to just leave the water for people to help themselves. They don't want people quenching their thirst with water even they could buying drinks.
It also depends on what type of eaterie it is. The better the restaurant, the more I'd expect them to pour, but in a cafe I wouldn't. But, honestly, as I said earlier, I'm really not bothered.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/02/2022 19:25

Let me pour my own drinks, I'm 43!! I promise I hardly ever spill.

A particular irritant is when they actually physically remove the wine from your table between tops up. Give it back!

maddy68 · 08/02/2022 19:26

I want serving. I pour my own at home

Nowthereistwo · 08/02/2022 19:28

Related- my biggest annoyance is when they pour a fizzy drink into a glass from a great height and all the fizz is removed.

melj1213 · 08/02/2022 19:35

When I worked in hospitality I was trained that if someone asked for water for the table we would bring it out with any other drinks ordered, pour the first glass for anyone who wanted it and then either leave the jug on the table or take it away to refill before bringing it back and leaving it on the table for the guests to help themselves from then on (this would obviously depend on how full/empty it was after the first round, no point leaving a jug on the table with only half a glass worth of water).

Same with wine, you would always pour the host/whoever ordered the wine a small amount when you bring the bottle over so they can taste it - check it isn't corked/sour etc - before pouring rhe first round. It should then be left for guests to serve themselves but if you are at the table (delivering plates/doing a check back/taking a dessert order etc) and see that people's glasses are nearly empty we were always taught to offer to top up their wine and pour it for them.

ClariceQuiff · 08/02/2022 19:37

I like it poured for me. The less I have to do in a restaurant, the better. None of this self-service carvery crap, thank you very much!

BuddhaForMary · 08/02/2022 19:38

Jug and then leave me alone. I don't want fussing over I just want to eat my meal.

littledrummergirl · 08/02/2022 19:38

Jug left on the table

Precipice · 08/02/2022 20:00

Jug left, because a single glass of water is very little and soon gone, and it's a pain to attract the attention of waitstaff and wait for them to give a refill (and again). I'll drink a fair amount of water even if I'm also having wine or coffee, so I like it to remain easily available.

ouch321 · 08/02/2022 20:08

Couldn't care less, either is fine

eldora · 08/02/2022 20:13

A big Jung so we Cnut have to Saks for refills!

My autocorrect has made the above mistakes. I was about to correct them but kind of liked the errors 😂

chaosrabbitland · 08/02/2022 20:22

its been a bloody long time since i was out for a meal , but if i went for one again , then id like them to pour for me , might be safer than me accidently pouring it everywhere on the table

AuntyJanet · 08/02/2022 20:44

Jug.

Can’t do with having drinks poured for me.

I once had a waiter at a reasonably nice restaurant go to top up my water from the jug on our table. He missed, the very heavy jug smashed the edge of the glass, which shattered INTO my starter an then he sort of startled and sloshed water onto my leg.

Everyone in the restaurant was staring.

I ALWAYS ask them to leave the jug these days.

GeneLovesJezebel · 08/02/2022 20:49

Pour myself.

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 08/02/2022 20:59

I don’t really mind but what I can’t stand is the coming over to ask if everything is ok? They always interrupt the conversation or your mid mouthful! Just leave us alone!

PostThenGhost · 08/02/2022 21:01

Jug.
Put my stuff down then leave me alone.
