Posting in the hopeful chance someone knows more about this than me. I’m at the stage where I feel like this is all in my head and I’m worried I’m coming across as an attention seeker with the amount of appointments I’ve had.

Could a skin infection (skin/head) somehow spread to the sinuses? I’ve had eczema which keeps getting infected and is infected again and now I’ve got what seems to be sinusitis in one side of my face as well. It’s awful and i’m in agony with it.

I was worried the infection had somehow spread into my sinuses but I didn’t know if this was possible or not! I’m hoping I’m just worrying about nothing. My skin infection was previously s.aureus but now it’s infected again and we don’t know if it’s fungal or bacterial or not.

There’s so many horror stories online about infections spreading and I didn’t know if it was possible for it to spread like this, but given that the possible sinusitis is excruciating and worsening and the skin infection is on my face too, I wanted to ask just to check if anyone knew.

Sorry, I don't know, I was just coming to sympathise with the sinusitis, I had it at a ski resort once, it was excruciating, weirdly I had A problem with my skin too.
Hope it all fucks off soon!!

safclass · 08/02/2022 19:45

. I'm not sure about infections but I suppose it's possible, the nasal surfaces are moist and infection could spread easily. You can be really poorly with sinusitis. My husband nearly had to be admitted to hospital one Xmas with it. Wasn't feeling well on Xmas eve, worse in Xmas day and on Xmas night I spent most of the night on phone to 111 to get him an emergency appointment. He had compacted and infected sinusitis, massive temp, severe pain. He was given 10days of strong antibiotics and had to be see by his gp so many days in.
Please get it checked out.

Montgomerystubercles · 08/02/2022 19:55

Could it be cellulitis?

It’s awful isn’t it! I had never appreciated how sore it could be before this.

Thanks for the well wishes x

Have you called the out of hours service? Sinusitis is the most horrific thing; get antibiotics asap. The nasal water spray and steam bowls can help temporarily relieve the pain too! I had this three times during pregnancy; never had before or after so it must have been related in some way.

Best of luck OP

If you have a skin infection and open source of infection and are now getting pain and swelling of the face then you need to get medical attention OP. Can you get to a walk in centre?

VestaTilley · 08/02/2022 20:57

I had a virus this summer which started as a cold, then became an ear infection with a perforated ear drum, then it became sinusitis.

I’d never had it before - agony, and it lingered for months.

Worth getting it checked out by the GP.

Didioverstep · 08/02/2022 21:01

Sinusitis is horrible OP. I get them a lot! Get on to the gp for antibiotics. However many don't like to give them until its been a few weeks or there's green mucus! I know my body and I have to tell a lie and say its been going on longer as I know antibiotics will clear it up after bitter experience of waiting and not being able to get-out of bed or lift my head when it got worse.

Also maybe try some sudafed as that helps with the headache but don't take paracetamol at the sane time. Check the box.
A hot shower, steam might help with congested sinus'. Hot drinks and rest!

Regarding skin I couldn't say. Sorry. Also I always get toothache with my sinusitis as they are just above the teeth so keep the paracetamol/inuprofen/sudafed near by!

BlueFlavour · 08/02/2022 21:01

In October I also had a cold virus that then became a middle ear infection and sinusitis. I ended up in hospital and had iv antibiotics. I’m still not quite right now. I was in bed for SIX weeks, and I’m still not right now.
Definitely phone your doctor, and sending you my sympathies Flowers

BlueFlavour · 08/02/2022 21:02

Sorry for repeating myself Smile

@Montgomerystubercles

Could it be cellulitis?
I hadn’t actually thought of that, there isn’t any swelling or heat so I presumed it wasn’t too bad an infection like cellulitis x

Thank you, I’ll try a steam bowl and nasal spray as I haven’t been doing that right now. Sorry you had it as well, it must have been so stressful to have it during pregnancy x

be fair the infected skin isn’t hot and swollen, it’s just an open wound and sticky and is being treated as being infected. I don’t have any other swelling across my face or head, I just have extreme pain in my sinuses and have been checked by my dentist who said it was likely sinusitis. I wasn’t sure if it was related to the skin infection or just bad timing to have both. I’ve got a walk in/minor injuries centre near the house so if it keeps worsening I’ll give them a call, I hadn’t thought about that. Thanks x

It sounds as if you’ll need antibiotics. I think you should be seen, and you shouldn’t delay if it’s that bad.
If you can get to a walk-in centre I would go. Otherwise call 111 for advice.

Did it eventually go away?

Sinusitis is torture. I'm not sure about the link with the skin condition, but one thing I found useful for sinusitis was the vickes nasal spray... something 'mist', I think...

I’ve got the toothache too! It’s horrible isn’t it. It must be awful for you to get it a lot.

Thanks for the tips, I’m going to take a hot shower and see if the steam helps x

TeenagersandFurbabies · 08/02/2022 22:24

Try some Actifed tablets from the pharmacy, that should help ease things as it's a decongestant & antihistamine combination. You can take them alongside ibuprofen & paracetamol.

Onlyforcake · 08/02/2022 22:26

Your skin is an organ itself. So absolutely something affecting it could cause all sorts of issues in another part of it. I hope you get somewhere soon with it x

My tip is to give up dairy - I used to get sinusitis all the time (three or four times a year - basically whenever I got a cold). I gave up dairy about 6 years ago and haven’t had it since.

Didioverstep · 08/02/2022 23:00

Also regarding toothache. I had some tooth problems and needed some fillings etc. After they have been sorted they aren't as frequent! So when you feel better maybe get a check up just in case!
