I am watching watercolour challenge presented by Fern Britton. I am so disappointed to hear her pronounce "Lido" as "Liedo" and not "Leedo" How are children supposed to learn how to speak properly when adults make such basic errors.

If she's using it as an English word, she has a point. In English if a vowel is followed by a single consonant, followed by a vowel, the first vowel is generally pronounced as its name, eg pike compared to pick.

If she's using it as an Italian word, "leedo" would be correct.

English has absorbed so many words from other languages that it doesn't always follow the rules, and there are words that some people anglicise and others don't. IME, lido is one of those.

I would prounounce as liedo. Didn't know that was wrong

AndyMurraysCat · 08/02/2022 16:31

🍪

CeleriacOfTheNight · 08/02/2022 16:32

When I stayed in Venice it was the Lee-do, but the local one here is the Lie-do.

ConstantCougher · 08/02/2022 16:32

OP I think your Wink wrong?

ISpyCobraKai · 08/02/2022 16:33

Its liedo to me.

BrandNewFor2022 · 08/02/2022 16:35

Liedo here too 🤷🏼‍♀️

HappyPumpkin81 · 08/02/2022 16:35

I would also pronounce it lie-doh

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/02/2022 16:36

I've always pronounced it liedo - the dictionary says I'm wrong, but it also advises me to pronounce grass as grarse - and that's just silly.

cravingmilkshake · 08/02/2022 16:36

I'm from Guildford and we always went to the LIEDO

Chakraleaf · 08/02/2022 16:37

I say lie-do and I swim at one regularly and we all day this

Moonflower12 · 08/02/2022 16:38

I grew up in Cheltenham and the whole population of that town refer to the lie-doh.

VapeVamp12 · 08/02/2022 16:40

Me too!

KweenCnut · 08/02/2022 16:41

I don't know anyone who says leedo

wildthingsinthenight · 08/02/2022 16:42

Lie do here too

NerrSnerr · 08/02/2022 16:43

In Gloucestershire it's a Lie-do too!

SocksAndTheCity · 08/02/2022 16:45

Also lie-do (the nice one at London Fields) Smile

BurscoughBooths · 08/02/2022 16:45

Isn’t it like Ikea? No matter how many times I see the advert for IK-EA, I always call it I-KEA. The name has been anglicised in exactly the same way as lido

CMOTDibbler · 08/02/2022 16:46

When referring to outdoor swimming pools in the UK, both pronunciations are correct. I forget all the ins and outs of it, but I've seen it discussed in articles about them

Err, it is Lie-do where I am!
imnottoofussed · 08/02/2022 16:47

I'd say leedo but that's because I've only read about them in books and on googling it told me leedo. I don't think we have them in NW England so it'll always be leedo to me

ApolloandDaphne · 08/02/2022 16:49

I would call it a lie-do.

CaptainCabinets · 08/02/2022 16:49

You really thought you did something here, didn’t you? Grin

sorrynotathome · 08/02/2022 16:51

Liedo for me - and I'm old enough to remember when they were common and everyone said Liedo!

x2boys · 08/02/2022 16:52

We don't ,which annoys me immensely ,however I once went to a Lido in Tenerife as a child and I think we pronounced it as Lie Do .
