I am watching watercolour challenge presented by Fern Britton. I am so disappointed to hear her pronounce "Lido" as "Liedo" and not "Leedo" How are children supposed to learn how to speak properly when adults make such basic errors.

OP posts:

I'm with you OP: lee doh all the way. I'm in Wales, for reference.

PyjamaMamma · 08/02/2022 17:02

I’ve heard my local one being called lee-do but I’m guessing it’s probably because that’s the i sound in Welsh (or maybe the Welsh-Italian population have kept the original pronunciation and the Welsh followed? Grin )

SomeOwlsCoo · 08/02/2022 17:02

I usually say leedo liedo as I'm never sure which is correct. I've been told scathingly that I'm wrong using both at times. So I say both to cover myself Grin

GroggyLegs · 08/02/2022 17:03

Lie-doh.
Sc-own.
Tort-uss.
Li-bree

You're well-cum.

gogohm · 08/02/2022 17:05

Heard ours called both, I call it the outdoor pool!

MrsWooster · 08/02/2022 17:05

How do you pronounce the blow up mattresses on which one floats in the lido?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/02/2022 17:07

I believe there was an open air pool in Surbiton called 'Surbiton Lagoon' but I suspect it had neither white sand nor touquoise sea lapping near by.

LampLighter414 · 08/02/2022 17:07

LIEDO

MAKE ENGLISH ENGLISH AGAIN

PostThenGhost · 08/02/2022 17:16

I’ve always, in my head, read it at Lie-doh.

I remember when I heard someone pronounce it lee-doh on TV and felt foolish for always reading it the other way.

I will feel foolish no more! LIE-doh! LIE-doh! LIE-doh!

LaurieFairyCake · 08/02/2022 17:18

Yes it's LIE do

Always been that in English

Georgeskitchen · 08/02/2022 17:23

Definitely Lie-do
My mother always said Leedo 🤣

Iwantmyoldnameback · 08/02/2022 17:34

Ruislip Lido. As in Lie doh.
I kea
Lidall

jimmyreckon · 08/02/2022 17:39

It is lie-doh never heard it the other way

Unless we've had a another strange intervention prompting us to pronounce words in their original form - like nestle changing from nessles or nougat changing from nugget

Corneliusmurphy · 08/02/2022 17:48

Ruislip liedoh Aldershot liedoh
Clearly I hang out in all the classy places… Smile

Lie-low goes in the pool for whoever asked

And I also pronounce it grarse not graaass

Scone is interchangeable I’ve realised depending on whom I’m speaking to. Also no shits given with regard to jam/cream order. Lots of both ta.

eddiemairswife · 08/02/2022 17:56

We used to call my local one 'Brockwell Park Baths.

DockOTheBay · 08/02/2022 18:13

LOL nice one OP you've made yourself look a right plum.

Fleurdebleurgh · 08/02/2022 18:14

I manage a Lido and call it a Lie-do Halo

Darbs76 · 08/02/2022 18:17

Liedo for me too

ShadowPuppets · 08/02/2022 18:18

Well it depends if you’re using the word in an English context or as it would be said in its original language, doesn’t it? DH and I had this over ‘croissant’ the other day. If you’re looking for heinous crimes against the English language, I would gently suggest picking an English word to get enraged by?

Glugglejug · 08/02/2022 18:22

I use both. London Fields Lido is ‘lie-doh’ but the Thames Lido in Reading is ‘lee-doh’ but that is 100% to do with how they answer the phone when you ring them.

Seemssounfair · 08/02/2022 18:23

I say outdoor pool - pronounced outdair pull 🤣

Don't think I have ever used the word Lido!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 08/02/2022 18:27

It's one of those words you can pronounce _Either or eIther way isn't it? (See what I did there?)

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 08/02/2022 18:28

Sorry, italics fail there!

iklboo · 08/02/2022 18:31

How are children supposed to learn how to speak properly when adults make such basic errors.

May I present 'Scone'?

And just how often do children use lido in a conversation?

IsDaveThere · 08/02/2022 18:32

I can't imagine many children watching watercolour challenge and copying Fern Britton's pronunciation, so I wouldn't worry about it Grin
