After reading this I always flush with lid down : www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/bacteria-toilets-flush-lid-closed-b1535481.html?amp

Me too.

Thirkettle · 05/02/2022 10:15

Yes. Surely common knowledge nowadays?

SilverOtter · 05/02/2022 10:17

Me too. My house is a tip and I detest cleaning, but this is the one thing that really grosses me out!

CrunchyCarrot · 05/02/2022 10:21

I never knew or thought about this! So have never flushed with the lid down from childhood onwards. We have a toilet that has an 'extra bend' after the U-bend so I always wait to see if the paper has gone down (half the time it hasn't so need to reflush).

YeOldePotato · 05/02/2022 10:37

I thought everyone knew this?

SparklyLeprechaun · 05/02/2022 10:44

I thought it was common knowledge but it's not something I give any headspace to. This fear of bacteria is ott, if you let it get to you you'll never leave the house.

minipie · 05/02/2022 10:48

We don’t flush with the lid down and no-one has got ill from using our bathroom.

Bacteria are everywhere. Your phone will be covered in bacteria. It’s fine. We need to be exposed to small amounts of pathogens in order to build up immunity.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/02/2022 10:48

I thought everyone knew this?

Might depend how old one is. I am in my 60s and this was never talked about back in the day, so I figure by now I've been exposed to most things this way, why bother? Grin

AgentCarterRocks · 05/02/2022 10:49

Our wall-hung toilet has the flush button on the vertical face so you have to move the lid to flush the thing. This was an intentional choice on my part...... :-)

PuppyMonkey · 05/02/2022 10:51

Meh, do it however you want as long as you check you haven’t inadvertently left anything nasty behind in the toilet bowl afterwards.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/02/2022 10:52

I place my face directly over the bowl and the flush, that way I absorb any nutrients that may have passed through

HunkyPunk · 05/02/2022 10:53

Yes, I do, but always do the double-check afterwards!

Hoppinggreen · 05/02/2022 10:57

We had our ensuite done recently and the flush is behind the lid so you have to close it to flush
It’s the future

Nice
MrsWooster · 05/02/2022 10:59

So next time, when you sit on the loo, you can clean the underside of the lid with the back of your clothes…. Very efficient

Lightning020 · 05/02/2022 11:00

I have been flushing with the lid down for years as I used to believe in feng shui. It is supposed to help money. Load of twaddle. It didnt help there but I do find it more hygienic so I persevere.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 05/02/2022 11:04

Yep flush with the lid down and toothbrushes live inside the bathroom cupboard as I'm sure Dd leaves the lid up.

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/02/2022 11:05

I always have done, and taught my kids the same.

Topseyt · 05/02/2022 11:10

I couldn't give a shit about this!

Itsnotmyjob · 05/02/2022 11:13

We all do because it does away with the leaving the seat up/down argument as well as for hygiene.

DillonPanthersTexas · 05/02/2022 11:16

It does amuse me how people equate flushing the toilet with the lid up to some Geneva fountain of shit spraying everywhere.

DHCaughtMeSoNC · 05/02/2022 11:17

It doesn't matter how much of the shit gets sprayed. The idea is to keep it to a minimum
babyjellyfish · 05/02/2022 11:19

Lid down, and if it's a No.2, lid back up again to check the bowl is clean and then lid back down again.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 05/02/2022 11:27

Always flush with the lid down, always have done. Toothbrushes etc are all inside a cabinet too. Don’t want splashed up fecal matter on them. 🤮

Dilbertian · 05/02/2022 11:27

Have never been bothered by this. Have always flushed with the lid up and likely to continue to do so. From discussions with friends, colleagues and MN, it would seem that my family have fewer D&V bugs and fewer lung infections than average, so I doubt there's anything wrong with our (un)sanitary procedures.
