I was just looking for two pens that were on the sofa with my diary when I went to bed last night. Today I couldn't find them. I took everything off of the sofa, looked under the sofa, around it, checked the study, my bedroom, kitchen... even called DH to ask if he knew where they were.

After searching the house I have sat down on the sofa and the three pens are on the arm of the sofa where I left them yesterday. The pencil case (yes I have a pencil case) that I searched is right next to them.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened but it's one where I KNOW they were not there half an hour ago.

Happened to me with a set of keys once. Lost them for three days when there was only me in the house. In that time I did at least two loads of laundry. On the third day - after having searched the entire house including the utility room where the washing machine resides - there they were bold as brass - huge bunch of keys in full view on top of the washing machine.

There will be a cat along soon to tell us about his saucer.

Once I lost a colander for about a week.
Found it in the back of a cupboard with another colander that was exactly the same. We definitely only had one before, I think it went to another dimension for a while and brought a friend back with it. So weird.

GreenerWithTheScenery · 03/02/2022 10:40

This happens to DH ALL the time!
He looks in the cupboard for something, it's not there. I look in the cupboard and there is it! Right at the front.

I think we have a poltergeist....

This happens to use too Grin

Not so often when I look for something and I usually remember where I have left something so even not being able to find it is odd! Usually means DH had put it away

Are you sure DH isn’t doing it? I’d be keeping a bit of a an eye on that.

hellcatspangle · 03/02/2022 10:56

I would be suspecting your DH. He's either winding you up, or he tidied them away and then forgot he'd done so until you reminded him.

Chocomelon · 03/02/2022 11:03

No because I started looking for them after DH left. I looked all over then found them on the sofa. DH wasn't here in that time.

I thought everyone knew this is The Borrowers. You have some living in your house. Their relatives also live here.

Chocomelon · 03/02/2022 11:05

When I say I called DH I meant on the phone.

I'd love to have Borrowers / little people!!

We thought it was chilly in the house the other night. I checked the heating thermostat and it was set at 5 degrees. Even in my most enthusiastic energy saving moments I'll only turn it down to 16 degrees. How did that happen?

There will be a cat along soon to tell us about his saucer.

I literally only came here to see if that cat has joined MN.

Oh, good. Smile

Well I think. Grin

I do this sometimes and it’s just that I’ve not looked at the right angle. So the item doesn’t look as I expected.

I think we have a poltergeist....

This happens to my 9 year old. He just seems to have a habit of only looking very specifically at where he thinks the thing is, then he comes to find me, swearing blind it’s not there, whereupon I walk straight into the room and point it out. He thinks I’m magic, I just think he has tunnel vision when looking for things.

The day before yesterday he was looking for a throw he tends to put around him when doing homework (draughty house, mid-renovation, comfort-loving child). I said ‘It’s on the sofa’, as I had just seen it. He went and looked and came out saying it wasn’t. I went in and looked, and there it was, draped over the back of the sofa in full view. I brought him into the living room and said ‘Where on the sofa did you look?’ and he looked at me and said ‘Well, there!’ while pointing to the seat of the sofa. I concluded that he had imagined so strongly that it had been left in the position it would have been if he’d had it on his lap, his mind just edited out the sight of it a few inches above where he was focused.

I think this is responsible for a significant number of ‘appearing/disappearing’ phenomena.

InisnaBro · 03/02/2022 11:27

Or yes, @SheWoreYellow — that might be right, too. DS was expecting to see his throw in a certain position, and automatically discounted the same item folded and at a different angle on the same piece of furniture!

Ormally · 03/02/2022 11:29

I’ve lost 3 odd socks, usually they come out the legs of our jeans after I’ve washed them. Although I did take a pile of jeans to the Chazza, so if anyone out there has my socks …

RumTumBum · 03/02/2022 12:12

One day we had a Sainsbury's delivery, I put the shopping away and, having had no bin liners left until then, went to change the full one. I looked everywhere for them, swearing, slamming the same drawers and cupboards several times, getting really irate. I went to check in the utility for the billionth time, turned round back into the kitchen - and there they were; standing on end next to the sink AngryConfused

Teaforme123 · 03/02/2022 12:19

This morning my bedroom TV remote vanished. I turned the room upside down, shook the bed sheets, looked under the beds, in the wardrobe, picked up everything from the floor, checked behind pillows, looked everywhere. Nothing. Then it shows up. Just sitting in the bed. It was absolute NOT there when I looked 🤷😂

Gizacluethen · 03/02/2022 12:39

Sometimes your eyes just can't see things. Or your brain isn't registering what your eyes are seeing. It's something my autistic brain does alot, I brush my hands on surfaces now lol

Chocomelon · 03/02/2022 14:43

@RumTumBum @Teaforme123 yes exactly like that!

It's not the angle as I was sitting on the sofa abs I emptied the pencil case onto the arm of the sofa and they weren't there but that's where I saw them not long after
