Rip-off Britain?

timetokill · 03/02/2022 09:31

Just a thought...

I am on maternity leave so the TV remains on in the background, Rip-Off Britain is on, and I think it's content is relevant and interesting, but I find it proper odd that the 3 lady presenters look near identical - age, race, style etc.

AIBU to think they (BBC) should mix it up a bit? Maybe even get a brunette, a lad, or a young'un...

They're there to appeal to a certain demographic, my mid-60s dad thinks they're "smashing" so there's a clue to which demographic Grin

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 03/02/2022 09:37

Surely it should be who is best for the role?

Samcro · 03/02/2022 09:39

oh yes. how dare they give older women air time!!!!!

MorningStarling · 03/02/2022 09:41

It's better to get the people who are best for the show they're presenting.

You get ex-tennis players commentating and presenting Wimbledon because boxers and football fans tend to be less good at presenting tennis.

DaffodilDandilion · 03/02/2022 09:43

I like the fact they’ve given the job to 3 older women who are generally underrepresented elsewhere on the tv

Rabblesthecat · 03/02/2022 09:44

My biggest issue is that many of the items are not rip off

Its people being too stupid to not realise the offer is too good to be true

Or people falling for obvious scams

Its been a long time since I've actually seen a genuine rip off

Rabblesthecat · 03/02/2022 09:45

If I want to sell a pint of water for thousands claiming it will enhance your life due to some magical force........ aint my fault if you fall for it I'm not forcing you to pay for it

Yes it’s really more about people’s piss-poor decision making skills.
Tricked2003 · 03/02/2022 09:50

They are extremely experienced presenters/journalists and are flying the flag for the representation of older women on TV.
Angela is 77, Julia is 74 and Gloria is 81. For far too long women have been replaced on TV as they aged, unlike their male counterparts.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 03/02/2022 09:51

I would certainly watch a programme called "People's Piss Poor Decision making"

AuntyJanet · 03/02/2022 09:52

There are typically very few presenting opportunities for older women. In fact, the BBC has been accused of ageism in the past regarding this. On that basis, I don’t see a problem. If you look at BBC programming as a whole they have a diverse range of presenters.

Shiningpath · 03/02/2022 09:52

Disgusting how many opportunities there are for middle and older aged women on television. This has to stop. For too long young men have been marginalised in the world of entertainment.

timetokill · 03/02/2022 09:53

Sorry I don't see the correlation how 3 older ladies are more experienced with the content they are presenting. Re. Ex-Sports presenters example above

SAH mums and dads, unemployed, furloughed, WfH employees.. etc are also prospective demographic, so should be represented too, not just the OAP audience.

I've been watching it too due to being ill with covid! I love their really clear voices and language. They are of the received pronunciation era.

Don't get me wrong I think these ladies are fabulous, experienced, skilled etc... but not all on the same show, it's so odd

They'd rather blame someone else though than admit they are daft.

'Oh but it seemed so genuine that he was selling me the crown jewels for £5 as long as I sent him £5000 first. He said I'd get my money back, it was just a deposit. Rotten scammer...'

TheCanyon · 03/02/2022 10:01

It's been in since my eldest was a baby so 12/13 years with my the same if not exact same format of presenters. That surely shows that the 3 older ladies are popular.

Blueberrycreampie · 03/02/2022 10:03

To be fair, some of the holiday scams, eg villas that don't exist or Air BnBs that cancel last minute could happen to anyone, clued up or not!

HugeAckmansWife · 03/02/2022 10:03

no-one is furloughed now, SAHP should be parenting, not watching TV, WFH should be working, not watching TV, unemployed should be doing job applications or gaining skills / studying / volunteering. That is not an argument for putting any of those demographics on as presenters over experienced professionals. Also, their calm and rational approach possibly helps to undermine the bloody "karen" nonsense that older women who are pissed off about something are just unreasonable.

I don't disagree that some of the content is more about highlighting the vulnerable / gullible that fall for scams but that's not exactly NOT of interest. Things that might be obvious scams to a younger, tech savvy, on social media all the time type may not be to someone like my parents.

kittensinthekitchen · 03/02/2022 10:05

Furloughed demographic?

Isn't Furlough (as we came to know it) all over?

Blueberrycreampie · 03/02/2022 10:05

Maybe we should get Holly or Rochelle or Davina as we so seldom see them on tv! Confused

I think because they are older maybe the older people will listen to them.
I think it's a great programme that does what it says.

timetokill · 03/02/2022 10:14

One of these women can easily present on the One Show, Bargain Hunt, Country File (for example)

There are so many shows that they can present (and represent) but the BBC has lumped them all on one show
