Rip-off Britain?

timetokill · 03/02/2022 09:31

Just a thought...

I am on maternity leave so the TV remains on in the background, Rip-Off Britain is on, and I think it's content is relevant and interesting, but I find it proper odd that the 3 lady presenters look near identical - age, race, style etc.

AIBU to think they (BBC) should mix it up a bit? Maybe even get a brunette, a lad, or a young'un...

OP posts:
Tricked2003 · 03/02/2022 10:16

You are refusing to get the point op! The show is presented by popular, experienced presenters............their age and gender are irrelevant. Diversity exists across the range of programming of the BBC.
The USP of Rip off Britain is that it is presented by 3 mature friends who have a good dynamic.

Hospedia · 03/02/2022 10:16

I don't disagree that some of the content is more about highlighting the vulnerable / gullible that fall for scams but that's not exactly NOT of interest. Things that might be obvious scams to a younger, tech savvy, on social media all the time type may not be to someone like my parents

I agree with this (although not your bit about who should and shouldn't be watching TV Grin ). The amount of times my mum has rang me to say "I've had a text from Amazon/Royal Mail/DPD about a parcel they can't deliver..." and I've had to say to her that it's a scam. Phishing scams nowadays can be quite sophisticated and genuine looking, things have moved on a lot since the 'email from a Nigerian Prince' days.

Monopolyiscrap · 03/02/2022 10:17

Do you think Top Gear also should have a greater mix of presenters? Or can you see that the presenters are chosen to appeal to the target audience for the programme?

Mamamwmwma · 03/02/2022 10:20

They are trusted by their audience target. It’s brilliant that older women are still presenting shows like this. It’s odd that you think they should be replaced.

Peas252 · 03/02/2022 10:27

I agree with the OP, but they should be aiming at the MN posters demographic.

Going by the threads on here, there's plenty of posters with piss poor decision making, so they should be represented.

Monopolyiscrap · 03/02/2022 10:33

I agree it is a bit sneering to say they are not rip offs. Lots of people are not financially savvy and get taken in by scams or misleading advertising. A programme educating people so they can protect themselves is good.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 03/02/2022 10:35

@timetokill

One of these women can easily present on the One Show, Bargain Hunt, Country File (for example)

There are so many shows that they can present (and represent) but the BBC has lumped them all on one show

Or they can easily present Rip off Britain which they are doing...
ElephantOfRisk · 03/02/2022 10:36

Given that the rest of the programming falls over itself to overrepresent other minorities, i think it's fair enough. You don't need to have an exactly representative of everything in one program, it's having an overall balance of everything across different programme types that's important. Give the jobs to the best person for the job and give everyone a decent chance is fine.

CorrBlimeyGG · 03/02/2022 10:39

The show is presented by popular, experienced presenters............their age and gender are irrelevant.

Their age and gender are relevant, but for positive reasons. The show tries to reach a certain demographic, and these women will appeal to that group. That's a good thing.

SaySomethingMan · 03/02/2022 10:41

I agree with you OP. Sure they’re older because the show is targeted at an older demographic hut there could be at least one person who isn’t white.
Representation matters, blah blah blah

I wonder how many non-white older people would like to seen at least one non-white person. I know I would if I’m blessed enough to live that age z

Ponoka7 · 03/02/2022 10:43

Do you question the line up in other programmes? If so you'd find them very lacking in white older women. The women who are presenting, such as Anne Robinson, have to get typecast and then go with that. The chasers and eggheads were underrepresented by older women, as are many quiz shows. ROB is about a subject matter which works better presented by someone of a journalistic/research/formal background.

SaySomethingMan · 03/02/2022 10:43

I do wonder if the target audience would shout “too woke” in disgust if they dared to add a non-white older person? I don’t understand why they wouldn’t in this day and age. It’s the BBC after all

Ponoka7 · 03/02/2022 10:46

"Sure they’re older because the show is targeted at an older demographic hut there could be at least one person who isn’t white.

Like it or not, white people are still the highest percentage of the population. If there was a person of colour, with the right background/skills, who wanted the job, then great, but token diversity does none of us any good.

Pazuzu · 03/02/2022 10:47

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

I would certainly watch a programme called "People's Piss Poor Decision making"
So would I. Sounds far more realistic.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/02/2022 11:10

but it is their show presumably?

i used to watch Heir hunters, originally presented by nadia sawalha with these grey haired chaps in the background doing all the leg work,
it had a make over, gone were he grey haired chaps, in came the youngsters!
i find that appalling and on this note, leave these 3 ladies alone!

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/02/2022 11:11

@Hospedia

They're there to appeal to a certain demographic, my mid-60s dad thinks they're "smashing" so there's a clue to which demographic Grin
"Smashing" Grin
Daenerys77 · 03/02/2022 11:11

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

I would certainly watch a programme called "People's Piss Poor Decision making"
This could fill a whole channel, 24/7 (and it could be called Mumsnet TV).

the bbc should tread carefully

www.theguardian.com/media/2014/aug/12/countryfile-presenter-charlotte-smith-dropped-young-pretty-returns-show

Corrected link.

I think it is great that there are pockets of the BBC which haven't succumbed to ageism.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 03/02/2022 11:31

What positive difference to the show would it make to swap one of them out for a 30/40 something brunette?

Surely it's a good thing that there are still presenting opportunities there for older women?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/02/2022 12:19

thanks @DdraigGoch
