Husband and vegetables

My husband uses the words "cauliflower" and "broccoli" interchangeably. When I get confused because he's referred to some broccoli as cauliflower, he reacts as if I'm being pedantically over-specific, as if he'd said "potato" and I'd replied, "do you mean maris piper?"

AIBU to call a cauliflower a cauliflower?

Very annoying. A cauliflower is always a cauliflower. LTB

anothersmahedmug · 27/01/2022 18:26

Is he colour blind ?

How ridiculous.

Does he find words meaning stuff particularly hard?

Does he call a car a boat? Or a carrot a bean?

Start calling him Giles (unless of course his name IS Giles) and when he gets annoyed, say, 'oh piffle! It's a name, isn't it? A name for a male person, and you are - are you not - a male person? God you are SO PEDANTIC. Here, have a plate of broccoli' (and hand him some cauliflower)

JeffersonWoof · 27/01/2022 18:36

This is pleasingly bonkers.

I'm might start doing it myself.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/01/2022 18:40

They are completely different. Its like calling a cat a dog as they both have four legs.

Cyberworrier · 27/01/2022 18:43

My husband does this with cucumbers / courgettes! It doesn't make sense to me. He will say the wrong name for berries too sometimes. Weird!

pointythings · 27/01/2022 18:45

You should get one of these and cook it for him - should absolutely blow his mind. (They're tasty)

Husband and vegetables... I thought this was going to be some recipe ideas.

malificent7 · 27/01/2022 19:06

Ltb. Definately.

I thought he was going to be having 'too much fun' with a courgette.
NeverChange · 27/01/2022 19:08

My sister in her 40s referred to them as green trees or white trees when she was a child.

She still does unfortunately!

sadpapercourtesan · 27/01/2022 19:09

Oh knickers, someone else got there first with the Romanesco photo Angry Grin

He's wrong. Cauliflower isn't broccoli!

WelcomeHere · 27/01/2022 19:11

We have romanesco quite a lot and to be fair it is quite like a cauliflower even though it isn’t one. Maybe this is what started it all.

My DH uses the wrong names for LOADS of things. It's infuriating and also amusing when he is so adamant he's using the right word, getting all irate I'm not understanding him, then realises he's calling it the wrong nameHmm

TonTonMacoute · 27/01/2022 19:20

Insist he refers to them as brassicas in future.

NewYearCalavicci · 27/01/2022 19:21

OK so they a both a bit 'tree like' but that's where it ends
Cook a whole cauil for him then a whole broccoli ( I mean whole dont cut it up ) then ask if he wants a small or large one next time.

Now on the other hand , swede / turnip , English/ Scottish is a whole new ball game Confused

Shuffletime · 27/01/2022 19:22

Tbf he's only slightly incorrect. Cauliflower and broccoli are the same species. As are cabbage and Brussel sprouts.

Kinda like different breeds of dog, same species, same basic DNA but different characteristics.

I thought it was going to be about the aubergine emoji.
arethereanyleftatall · 27/01/2022 19:30

Ah, snap @Tal45

TroysMammy · 27/01/2022 19:30

Buy a purple cauliflower, that will confuse him even more.

MsFrog · 27/01/2022 19:33

My husband does this with stuff all the time, and then acts the same way, as if I'm being pedantic. A pillow and a cushion, fair enough, I get are similar (although it still grates on me), but once did it with wardrobe and shelf - completely different things, don't act like I'm being ridiculous when I don't understand!!

So YANBU

StillWeRise · 27/01/2022 19:48

what is commonly called broccoli is actually calabrese
show him some proper purple sprouting broccoli
and then blow his mind by showing him some white sprouting broccoli

Helenahandkart · 27/01/2022 19:55

I would probably start calling everything in the house cauliflower. ‘Please could take the cauliflower out of the cauliflower dear?’ ‘Have you set the cauliflower to remind you to take the cauliflower out?’ ‘Have you phoned up the cauliflower to arrange the cauliflower test, it’s due next week’. ‘Pass me the cauliflower, I need to change channels on the cauliflower so that we can watch the new cauliflower’

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 27/01/2022 19:57

One of these days he will have tried your patience once too often and bam! Patio.
