To hate my face in a selfie

When I take a selfie in my selfie camera, face on and especially straight faced, I look awful! Its like my face is lopsided, one brow looks higher, one eye looks lazy! In the mirror I don't notice it and i assume my face is pretty symmetrical. Can anyone else relate to this?

Me!! In a selfie my face looks massively lopsided which I don't feel is as noticeable in real life - i also feel like my lips look weirdly thin!

KatherineofGaunt · 27/01/2022 11:23

I learnt I do not have a symmetrical face some years ago. I read somewhere that people find those with symmetrical faces more attractive, so a lot of Hollywood celebs tend to have more symmetrical faces. No idea how true that is.

TheVolturi · 27/01/2022 11:30

I don't take selfies as a rule but I for instance I take one with the kids I always think I look strange! If I reverse the image (I think that's what it's called) then I look normal again! I don't know if it's something to do with the front camera being like a mirror image or something, but then surely I'd look weird in a mirror too?

PenCreed · 27/01/2022 11:30

I hate my face in pretty much any photo, you're not alone.

Valkyrie40 · 27/01/2022 11:33

Yep! When I look in the mirror I think I'm quite attractive and look fine but I HATE photos of myself and selfies are even worse.

I find a beauty filter helps!

MrsTimRiggins · 27/01/2022 11:33

I don’t think anyone has a completely symmetrical face, I’m sure I’ve read an article before making very attractive celebs have symmetrical faces and it made them look utterly bizarre.
The problem with a straight on, serious faced selfie is that it’ll highlight the asymmetry which would be noticeable otherwise, and certainly not when moving.
I actually do have a lazy eye, a reasonably noticeable one, and a degree of muscle difference on one side of my face. I’m reasonably good looking but I absolutely wouldn’t take a selfie like the one you describe! My solution is to not do it Grin

Hummingbirdcake · 27/01/2022 11:36

Yes same here. I have an unsymmetrical face anywaybut my nose definitely looks bigger in selfies.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 27/01/2022 11:57

Are you taking the selfie on a phone where it flips it? As on an iPhone it does this and that's why you don't look like yourself. You need to edit and flip it back so it's a mirror image

Yes so it's not a mirror image

Same! One eyebrow higher than the other and also nostrils different shapes Grin
Hope I don’t look that wonky to other people!

Shinydiscoballs1 · 27/01/2022 12:14

Yes same here about the nostrils!!

OP posts:
TheTurn0fTheScrew · 27/01/2022 12:15

Try having a big nose. I have one, but never really minded that much - figured that if Diana Spencer and Barbra Streisand can make it work then so can I. But front facing cameras basically turn me into Cyrano de Bergerac.

IlIlI · 27/01/2022 12:29

I think people who take good selfies just know which angles look best for them. Everybody can take a selfie that looks as good as or better than the mirror if they get angles and lighting right I think.
Wrong angles can make you look worse or some angles just make you look the same. It's like the thing years ago in MySpace days when every girl would take pics from higher angles to look slimmer or accentuate curves and hide bumps

WhyYesYABU · 27/01/2022 12:35

I'm 31 so not ancient and I can't for the life of me figure out why people are so keen on taking photos of themselves. It seems so cringey and narcissistic to me!!

I'm sure you look fine in real life. Its probably the flip thing mentioned above and the fact we are all varying in how photogenic we are. I know people who look significantly more attractive in photos than real life, and others whose photos never do them justice!

Frazzlerock · 27/01/2022 12:47

Yep me too. I have ptosis which is worse in one eye so can't do the big doe eyed look that I see so often. I look awful in selfies, and pretty crap in regular pictures too TBH. Unless I stand in a certain way to make my eyes look better.

MrsToothyBitch · 27/01/2022 12:51

I only like selfies of myself Blush. I know my angle & work it. Plus I only really take head & shoulders so it's a quick way to lose 4 stone!

Spooked102 · 27/01/2022 13:20

I’ve also noticed this with myself too my nose looks really wonky and the whole left side of my face is my “bad side”
Compared to the right, but in the mirror not noticeable

Abouttimemum · 27/01/2022 13:35

I don’t know about selfies but I can think I look great (or acceptable anyway) but as soon as I’m on a Teams I look like I’ve just been dug up. Dreadful!

HereIfYouNeedMe · 27/01/2022 16:24

@Shinydiscoballs1 so take a selfie then edit, hit the drop button then top left button and it'll look like you x

HereIfYouNeedMe · 27/01/2022 16:24

@Shinydiscoballs1 crop* button

Mylittlepixie · 27/01/2022 16:41

It matters a lot how you hold the camera. How close to your face, angle, light etc. play around with it a bit and you will be able to take flattering selfies.

Duchess379 · 27/01/2022 23:24

Yes! I think I look like a swamp monster, so I never actually take selfies now. 🤷🏼‍♀️

FabriqueBelgique · 27/01/2022 23:53

Yes! Nearly cried after taking my first selfie in years. Felt much better realising it’s mostly the bloody camera!

Also I kept this photo on my phone to remind myself to stop obsessing. We’re not supposed to be symmetrical!

I have a face like a cut-and-shut, even in the mirror, but it is even more noticeable in photos.

No point in obsessing about it, since there's no such thing as a head transplant.
