I am selling something on Gumtree for £600 that any potential buyer has to collect anyway somebody messaged me on Gumtree to say its very nice and that they want it. They then gave me thier email and asked me to message them on it. I messaged saying hi and they replied saying they want it and can they have my details including address in order to pick it up and pay by PayPal.
I gave all details and I then got a message from them saying they had paid the £600 plus an additional £100 but its pending in my account and won't be available to me until I've paid an amount via Amazon to the courier to collect it. I checked my PayPal it wasn't showing anything as pending but I got a PayPal notification which I found in my spam saying I have £700 pending. I have now ignored the buyer has I think they are up to something and I've had another email saying how can I be so heartless as if I don't follow through they can't get thier £700 back. I'm getting worried as I previously gave my address. I'm so bloody stupid.

@ToffeeMamma

It's pending simply because the amount is over £300 and they've you are not a registered business. It takes three to four days. You could be guilty of theft of you don't return the money or allow them to collect. The easiest way around this is to confirm that they can collect but only once payment is fully cleared in your account.
It’s a scam!!! The easiest way to deal with it is block them.

This happens a lot. The main thing to look out for is when they offer more than you have asked for. My mum was selling on Friday Ad and she nearly fell in the trap. You have to question why someone would offer more?

Just forward all of their emails to [email protected] then forget about it

Just thought it worth mentioning another scam I've seen recently.
A friend was selling some high value items for over £1000 and arranged to meet a buyer in a neutral location (they felt something 'off' from the start). Buyer turned up with an envelope of cash which my friend counted, it was all there. They then took the envelope back, sealed it and put it back in their pocket. Brought it back out to pay but had swapped the cash envelope with another which was wads of paper made to look like cash. My friend caught on the moment the cash was sealed and put back in the guys pocket luckily but it just shows you always need to pay attention.

They'll claim they're sending you extra money to spend on gift cards on top of the payment for your product

Hi there,

I've just nearly fallen for the same scam but have only given them my address without going ahead with anything else. I am scared now that I have given a scammer my home address. Could you please let me know if anything happened to you after this that you think is linked to it or not?

Annoyingwurringnoise · 14/03/2023 14:44

I had somebody try to pull pretty much the same Scam on me another day on Facebook marketplace. Stupidly, I also gave them my address and phone number, but as soon as I clocked the email, I knew it was a scam. Nothing seems to have happened though so I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s highly unlikely they’ll turn up on your doorstep because they’re probably in a different country.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 14/03/2023 15:38

As everyone has said, its a common scam.

One thing to remember though, is NEVER accept PayPay for goods that are collected. You have no seller protection and the buyer can claim the funds back through PayPal because you dont have any proof of sending or delivery.

Said they can't pick it up themselves as they are in a wheelchair and now I've give them nothing but regret.Hmm

A scam as old as time…they’re in a wheelchair/they’ll be at work/visually impaired. IT’S A SCAM

If they have paid, you can't cancel! Why is it "pending"?
