I stupidly gave my address and have been daft

I am selling something on Gumtree for £600 that any potential buyer has to collect anyway somebody messaged me on Gumtree to say its very nice and that they want it. They then gave me thier email and asked me to message them on it. I messaged saying hi and they replied saying they want it and can they have my details including address in order to pick it up and pay by PayPal.
I gave all details and I then got a message from them saying they had paid the £600 plus an additional £100 but its pending in my account and won't be available to me until I've paid an amount via Amazon to the courier to collect it. I checked my PayPal it wasn't showing anything as pending but I got a PayPal notification which I found in my spam saying I have £700 pending. I have now ignored the buyer has I think they are up to something and I've had another email saying how can I be so heartless as if I don't follow through they can't get thier £700 back. I'm getting worried as I previously gave my address. I'm so bloody stupid.

I've had the Facebook Marketplace UPS scam twice in the past week - here's todays attempt - we're selling off DC old baby stuff. I've reported & blocked.

Slightly different take on the voucher scam.

I got an e-mail from a lovely man called Barry, who had had such a tough time. It was his sisters birthday and he was in hospital (they had just lost their Mum too) and could I please get him some vouchers to send to his sister. He would reimburse me with money transferred to my bank account.

I politely apologised and said that I would love to help, but I was currently in prison. I found out that my neighbour had been trying to scam vulnerable people by asking for vouchers to be sent to them and I got a long stretch in prison due to cutting off my neighbours penis and balls with a rusty machete.

Such a shame Barry never got back to me.

I was selling a hoverboard on gumtree and was approached with this type of scam, by a woman who said she couldn't collect as she was eight months pregnant. I declined to sell the hoverboard to her on the grounds of health and safety during pregnancy Wink

Caelan2018 · 24/01/2022 19:35

It's a scam ignore her there is no £700

RealBecca · 24/01/2022 19:47

I'd report to police and tell them they can contact the police if they are genuine

DebHagland · 24/01/2022 20:03

If you log into your PayPal account it always shows pending payments and advises that you ship after payment has gone through.
NEVER access your PayPal account through an email link, always log on to PayPal through its website.
This is a classic scam attempt.....if they were using a courier then they could have booked a courier collection from you and paid for it directly with the courier.

dee1969 · 24/01/2022 20:08

It’s a common scam don’t send them anything. Don’t let them pick anything up

Melx42 · 24/01/2022 20:25

ITS A SCAM DONT PAY THEM BACK. IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE

Nenahar · 24/01/2022 20:36

@Tevion28

Said they can't pick it up themselves as they are in a wheelchair and now I've give them nothing but regret.Hmm
Regrettably extremely well known scam.

They ask you to pay someone or will send a courier with cash or to collect item.

Item will be collected or not.

But they will do a chargeback on paypal requesting the full amount back.

A friend got a similar message and hers was high value item too.

What a shame they can't spend the time they spend on looking for high value items on gumtree/ebay/facebook selling pages, looking or a real regular job!

love it!
Overdale · 24/01/2022 21:20

Its a well documented scam, they ask for the overpayment back then reverse the paypal payment

user1471447863 · 24/01/2022 21:51

Going by some of the responses on here it's no wonder these scammers do it - don't have to hit that many to get a gullible mark! And that's even after they have read the first few responses explaining that is a scam and how it works Sad

P.S. if anyone is looking to buy a bridge I have a nice big one for sale Smile

Tunnocks34 · 24/01/2022 22:03

Honestly they probably don’t live anywhere near you. They’ll be trying the same scam on dozens of people, hoping for someone to take the bait.

Block and ignore - I highly doubt they will turn up to your house

Sugarplumfairy65 · 24/01/2022 22:25

It's a very well known scam, but even if it wasn't you should never accept PayPal for something that's being collected. They can put a claim in as not received and if you can't provide tracking they get their money back.

icecreamcrackers · 24/01/2022 22:44

Scam they havent paid you at all

Dibbydoos · 24/01/2022 22:45

Just tell them to f-off and you knew they were scammers which is why you gave a false address. Plus loads of laughing faces.

They are not in UK.

Dibbydoos · 24/01/2022 22:46

Just tell them to f-off, that you knew they were a scammer and block them.

Sounds like a 419 scammer
StoneofDestiny · 24/01/2022 23:28

It's a scam. There are lots of 'I'm in a wheelchair', someone else will collect messages like this, and overpayments. You will end up with nothing - no money, no goods you are selling. Inform the site and tell them you've involved the fraud squad.

swampygirl · 24/01/2022 23:36

Scam.
As soon as I read
.... "and they replied saying they want it and can they have my details including address in order to pick it up and pay by PayPal."
A red flag came to mind and scam.
This scam has been dome many, many times.
Had they asked me for my address at that point, I would have given my paypal details and told them when the payment has cleared I'll give you the collection address.
You've got to be so careful these days. x

Mummabug18 · 25/01/2022 00:03

YouTube - Kitboga gift cards!

Musicislife · 25/01/2022 00:55

We had this selling something of a similar price, they got in touch saying they would arrange their own courier, but we thought if they don’t want to pick up in person what’s going on? Thought it through and decided if they actually send a courier we have no trace of that and they then request chargeback on PayPal , we can’t prove they have the goods so they get the high value item AND the money back - we immediately blocked them, you must ignore them now and only accept cash Flowers

lololololollll · 25/01/2022 01:32

Oldest trick in the book

givemepiece · 25/01/2022 01:41

I think OP got the message Grin
Just in case you haven't, OP... it's a SCAM

ToffeeMamma · 25/01/2022 07:58

It's pending simply because the amount is over £300 and they've you are not a registered business. It takes three to four days. You could be guilty of theft of you don't return the money or allow them to collect. The easiest way around this is to confirm that they can collect but only once payment is fully cleared in your account.
