Affair evidence or facebook bizarreness?

Oh my FB messenger, I get adverts for children’s learning apps etc.

My husband’s messenger suddenly has a number of adverts for romantic hotels in the UK. we are going through a tricky patch (talk of divorce). Do I assume:

  1. random facebook algorithm?
  2. surprise romantic trip to fix marriage?
  3. affair/trip with another woman?

I don't know but I do know my Facebook is currently advertising surrogacy agencies in the Ukraine. I have definitely not been looking for a surrogate. So the algorithm can sometimes come up with some bizarre things.

I get adverts for “adult” fiction on fb… I have definitely not been searching for anything of the kind.
If that’s the only thing that seems off, then I would ignore it.

Tothemoonandbackx · 19/01/2022 22:00

I've just gone on mine, and it's just showed me something for Muscle Food and then TUI, both things have never searched for, not even Diets or Holidays to even vaguely link it to either Ad xx

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 19/01/2022 22:01

Facebook advertises me a lot of kinky lingerie and expensive multimillion-pound houses due to a few random curiosity clicks. I also got a lot of pregnancy stuff well after my last pregnancy was behind me, clearly driven purely on demographic statistics. You aren't going to be able to entirely rule out 3, but 1 and 2 are a lot more likely - an idle daydream click once upon a time would be enough for the algorithm to funnel him a lot more hotel daydream fodder.

Noseylittlemoo · 19/01/2022 22:03

My fb feed keeps showing me ads for some strange things you put in your ears to reduce headaches / restore calmness ...
I have never searched for anything remotely related but all of a sudden about 3 companies advertising this type of product kept popping up on my feed!

Oh my gosh, do you get this one? 🤢

steff13 · 19/01/2022 22:06

Oh Facebook also thinks that I'm a lesbian and a dentist. I am neither of those things.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 19/01/2022 22:07

My current ad is for Gusto and I've never used anything even remotely similar.

I also keep getting adverts for washable rugs Hmm

Wombat98 · 19/01/2022 22:07

Mine is always showing me degree courses...

Mydogmylife · 19/01/2022 22:09

Adverts for diet regimes/ gastric bands - I haven't researched any of these. I suppose it's possible that fb is spying on me and suggesting them of its own accord - pretty cheeky if so I thought .

Aphrodite31 · 19/01/2022 22:15

OP - to answer your question ... there could be something in it. You need to search more.

Snally82 · 19/01/2022 22:16

I’m one of the people that creates and targets Facebook ads - I wouldn’t worry, there are many many reason why the ad could be served to him

VonHaus · 19/01/2022 22:18

My FB repeatedly advertises estate agents that deal in luxury properties (by which I mean worth millions). I suspect at some point in the dim and distant past I clicked on a luxury property out of curiosity and now it thinks I’m in the market for a mansion.

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 19/01/2022 22:19

@VonHaus mine thinks the same, when in fact I merely like to play Stupid Giant House Price Bingo with DH.

HouseOfRunners · 19/01/2022 22:24

Oh god…mine is a will writing service 😳😳

FatFucker · 19/01/2022 22:29

Omg! Me too! I mean what weird algorithm has worked that out based on my search history!!

And who even wants a washable rug!!

ImInStealthMode · 19/01/2022 22:36

It depends. I post paid ads on Facebook for holidays and I target a particular age group living in a particular radius of a particular airport. My ad could potentially appear to anyone in that location / age bracket regardless of anything they've previously viewed or liked.

Alternatively I could select people who have shown some mild interest in countless different topics, either related to or completely unrelated to holidays.

Perhaps the erotic fiction promoters are targeting people who've shown interest in reading, or relationships, or fiction. The romantic hotels in the UK could be targeting people who have shown interest in Centre Parcs, or the Cotswolds, or literally anything they deign to choose as a target.

Whenlifegivesyoulimoncello · 19/01/2022 22:46

There’s a million reasons. If you want to find out - click the dots on the right hand side of the ad and then click “why am I seeing this ad”

The answer could be “fancy hotel is Tarefetinf men between the ages of 30 - 50” or whatever
Or “fancy hotel is showing this ad to people who previously showed an interest (or a million other things).

ImInStealthMode · 19/01/2022 22:48

In fact, thinking more on it, I'd say it's likely romantic hotels approaching Valentines Day and targeting 'Men in relationships between 30 & 60 who live within a 2 hour drive of our hotel' for example, or some variation of that.

pastypirate · 19/01/2022 22:49

I get adverts for Etsy, accessorise and def the Pervy vampire fiction 😂

CastleCrasher · 19/01/2022 22:50

Facebook ads can be weird. I was bombarded with Tesla ads for ages, then literotica, then supplies for our fish. I've never searched for, bought, or had any interest in any of the above. No idea how I got in to whatever demographic they are aiming for Confused

CastleCrasher · 19/01/2022 22:51

Not "our" fish. Pet fish! The only fish I have are on my plate!!

surlycurly · 19/01/2022 22:52

I quite fancy one of those washable rugs as the kitten keeps shitting on my new one

Pedalpushers · 19/01/2022 22:53

It would be pretty normal for FB to assume a married man might be interested in booking a trip around January, no? Same as my tailored ads are all for fertility trackers because of my demographic. Travel industries are really pushing the ads at the moment.

Sunbird24 · 19/01/2022 22:55

I’m getting Snag tights, knitting kits and cereal. None of which are at all relevant to me!
