To go to dinner after root canal

Hello all!

I had dinner booked with a friend on Monday night. I’m really looking forward to it as I’ve only seen her once in the last 2 years due to covid etc.

Today my dentist called to say they can no longer do my pre booked appointment for root canal on Tuesday and have moved it to Monday at 8am. Dinner is at 6pm.

I think it will be fine and any numbing should have gone down by then. My DH says root canel is like surgery and I should change my dinner date with friend because I won’t enjoy myself.

I have already paid them over £500 for the treatment, I’m sure they would change the date but will probably charge me. I’m not sure if my friend could change date, but I would rather not mess her around.

Can anyone who has had root canal set my mind at ease? AIBU to expect to be able to eat my steak and chips 9 hours after the treatment?

Would really appreciate your advice.

Ask them if they would change the date, or just move your dinner forward with your friend.

No, you'll not be up for a steak and chips after a tooth extraction.

Unless they are putting it through a blender then I don’t think you would enjoy steak and chips very much!

Just to add, I realise this isn’t really a AIBU but shamelessly posting for traffic.

All ideas welcome including ‘get the fish’, ‘get shitfaced’ etc.

There's no way I'd have been able to go out for dinner after my root canal. I remember my jaw being really sore from having my mouth so wide open for so long, and the dentist putting a lot of pressure through my jaw when working on the tooth, so I wouldn't have wanted to be chewing a big meal.

You'll be fine by the evening. Just chew on the other side to protect it just in case.

I had an upper root canal mid-morning and was fine to eat in the evening.

Oh, people are talking about tooth extraction. I've never had root canal work after an extraction, just through my tooth with a crown on afterwards. I went back to work after a tooth extraction, though. It was a bit achy but settled it quite quickly. Maybe I have lead jaws or something!

I can't see why people are posting about extraction - have I missed it?! I wouldn't want to go the evening of an extraction but root canal you'll be fine

It's a root canal. You will be fine

Your tooth maybe a bit tender, but you have teeth the other side. The numbing will have worn off. Take some paracetamol straight after the appointment and regularly for the rest of the day.

Root canals are not as they used to be. I had one last summer and was terrified after all the horror stories I’d heard. It was literally no worse than a filling.
We were actually going on holiday the next morning so stayed at the airport hotel that night. Had the root canal at 5pm and was eating dinner in the hotel restaurant by 8pm. I think I had some sort of beige food platter and I didn’t have any problems eating any of it

There is no extraction. My dentist said she would not be happy about doing that so recommend The root canal instead.

Thank you all so much. My friend can’t do a date till next week, and I’m so desperate to see her I would rather risk it based in n this advice.

I think my DH is overreacting as he knows how much I like my food. I will order Cullen Skink and look enviously at her steak.

On another note, £500+ for the treatment for only one tooth!!!! Bloody hell I had no idea it was that expensive. Imagine what an incredible dinner I could have for that!

Oh god I sympathise with the cost. They weren’t sure whether I was going to be able to get my root canal done because I had so little of the tooth remaining so my dentist recommended I go to a root canal specialist. £850 I paid for it! And that was literally just the root canal so non of the pre work getting rid of the decay or the crown etc.

IIRC my cheek was swollen after a root canal. And then I was in pain at night (nurofen helped).
I wouldn't go for a dinner on the same day.

I’ve had a root canal, was totally fine once the anaesthetic had worn off. Gone are the days of arcane dentistry with hack saws. You’ll be fine OP, go and enjoy your dinner

Why not just reorganise the dinner just in case? Cost wise, i Agee they’re expensive. I’m paying £900 for my root canal next month!!!

I had one, it was fine. No difference to a normal filling
HOWEVER, some people are always unlucky- it’s a risk

I've had a depressingly high number of root canals following years of neglect (dental anxiety).

You should be absolutely fine by 6pm.

I had one a couple of years ago and wouldn't have managed same day steak. Maybe go to a fish restaurant, or an Indian where you could have daal or similar, in case.
