To go to dinner after root canal

Hello all!

I had dinner booked with a friend on Monday night. I’m really looking forward to it as I’ve only seen her once in the last 2 years due to covid etc.

Today my dentist called to say they can no longer do my pre booked appointment for root canal on Tuesday and have moved it to Monday at 8am. Dinner is at 6pm.

I think it will be fine and any numbing should have gone down by then. My DH says root canel is like surgery and I should change my dinner date with friend because I won’t enjoy myself.

I have already paid them over £500 for the treatment, I’m sure they would change the date but will probably charge me. I’m not sure if my friend could change date, but I would rather not mess her around.

Can anyone who has had root canal set my mind at ease? AIBU to expect to be able to eat my steak and chips 9 hours after the treatment?

Would really appreciate your advice.

Can't you just tell them you're not available at that time, and have them send you another date? They can't charge you for that; they're the ones who are changing the original appointment, they can't just expect you to be free whenever they choose.

You'll be fine but not for steak and chips. Something softer, you'd be fine. Soup, fish, mash would be absolutely fine.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/01/2022 18:04

I was fine to eat after I had root canal treatment once the numbing had worn off.

Goggling at the cost and feeling very lucky to have a great NHS dentist.

I've had several and my mouth has been fine a couple of hours after, but not my jaw. I couldn't eat anything chewy for a couple of days.

NannyR · 18/01/2022 19:04

I've had a lot of root canals and have never had any real pain afterwards - my jaw has ached slightly from being open so long but other than that it's just been like a filling that takes a long time. Based on that experience, I wouldn't have a problem with going out for dinner after an early appointment.

Just have the soup.

Oinkypig · 18/01/2022 19:49

Just to say if you are happy to have the tooth out (especially if it’s at the back) your dentist not being happy to do the extraction is not a reason to have root treatment. If you are willing to pay £500 for a root treatment I can guarantee you could be referred to an oral surgeon who would be happy to remove it for at least a couple of hundred less and that would be it done. Admittedly you probably wouldn’t want to go for dinner following an extraction.

TheChemicalMother · 18/01/2022 19:53

I have root canal fillings in loads of my teeth, and I would go for dinner in the evening.

If you have residual soreness take a paracetamol before going out and eat on the other side of your mouth.

No way is a root canal filling like surgery. IMO. IME.

So long as you've got time for the anaesthetic to wear off and you neck some ibuprofen you'll be grand. Unless planned, there is no extraction after root canal. I've had a few and whilst they're tedious as you're saying there for so long, I haven't found any bad at all!

Blupblup · 18/01/2022 20:04

I've had more than my fair share of root canals and would never have been able to go out and eat afterwards. Turns out I have weird tooth roots though. Do you know that your roots are normal? Mine caused 6 months of trouble, repeated infections and fairly constant pain (had it taken out in the end - decided after the first visit but had to wait for a specialist extraction so had repeated root canals on the same tooth in the meantime)

RJnomore1 · 18/01/2022 20:06

Is it the first or the second part of the root canal treatment?

SamBeckettsLastLeap · 18/01/2022 20:16

Yes I could, I'm the biggest wimp ever. Not steak but definitely fish and wine.

I am v grateful for NHS, cost under £100 (I think £65)

RJnomore1 · 18/01/2022 22:42

This could be because of the length of time between but the first part of my root canal was fine and stopped a toothache. Then covid came and it was a year of me packing the hole with temporary fillings before the second part. I’m saying the time may have impacted as she may have had to rumble around in my jaw more than normal but once the anaesthetic for the second part wore off I was in agony for 24 hours. I thought something was wrong and I would need to go back just as it started wearing off.

I’d be really wary of going out that night, I’ve never had an experience like that at the dentist with wisdom teeth removed or anything.

Hadjab · 18/01/2022 23:10

I’ve had a root canal, and it was fine, no pain at all once the anaesthetic wore off.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 24/01/2022 10:45

Just wanted to say thank you for everyone’s responses.

I got back from the dentist 1 hour ago and have already had marmite on toast, a boiled egg, toast with butter and 3 slices of Serrano ham. So somehow I’ll think I’ll be fine for dinner tonight!

Had it not been for this thread I may have cancelled dinner and been very disappointed, so thanks to you all again!

I've had root canal twice & I definitely didn't want to eat steak after! I think I was on a milkshake diet for 24hrs! It's not like having a filling..

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 24/01/2022 23:52

@TheDuchessOfBeddington

On another note, £500+ for the treatment for only one tooth!!!! Bloody hell I had no idea it was that expensive. Imagine what an incredible dinner I could have for that!
I'm having one this week that is £800. One tooth.
Thankgoditsbedtyme · 25/01/2022 00:04

Iv had root canal done twice. It’s no worse than a filling apart from the nerve has been removed. Just chew on the other side if it aches a bit but I doubt it will. I was fine :)

Ericaequites · 25/01/2022 00:23

I’ve had five root canals. I went on a first date that night, and enjoyed fall and naan. The date was a disaster. I mentioned the restaurant had once been a French place with flaming crepes. This was very impressive in the Eighties. I knew this because I’ve lived here all my life. She replied she had never spent more than a year in one place since she was seventeen, and concluded, “Just because you lived here all your life doesn’t mean you know what things used to be!” It went downhill thence.
