I was bitten over the weekend - Kept it cleaned out but had a phone appointment this morning at 9. Started antibiotics straight away.

I keep getting muscle cramps on my calf (where the bite was) and the red area has increased significantly since my phone call. I’m really worried, can’t straighten my leg, can barely walk and can’t get it comfortable. Part of me think I’m being a drama queen, part of me thinks I am wise to be concerned. It seems to be worsening quite rapidly. Am I expecting too much if the antibiotics?

YABU - You’re a drama queen
YANBU - yeah call doc back before they close. It shouldn’t be this bad

I'd call them and draw round it so you can show how it's spreading

Imayhaveerred · 10/01/2022 16:51

Call 111 or do the online triage (if in the UK) - if the red area is spreading fast you need stronger or different antibiotics. Bites can turn nasty very fast.

PinchOfVom · 10/01/2022 16:54

It’s the muscle cramps that are bothering me - I can handle the pain itself

It must be quite deep (Esp cos I’m a fatty )

Don’t know it’s that’s helpful

Hospital. Now.

UpToMyEye · 10/01/2022 16:56

I would 100% seek further medical attention
That’s quite a lot of spread in a day

PinchOfVom · 10/01/2022 16:56

I realise it doesn’t look that red on the photo 😂

Ring doctors or 111

emmathedilemma · 10/01/2022 16:57

definitely doctors or 111
MayThePawsBeWithYou · 10/01/2022 16:59

Its hot red and swollen, I would go to hospital with that, it has spread and you may have cellulitis.

loopylindi · 10/01/2022 17:01

GP or a and e now. Could turn nasty very quickly - cellulitis comes to mind.

RamblingFar · 10/01/2022 17:04

I'd go direct o A+E, but I have a history of bites turning very nasty.

Quartz2208 · 10/01/2022 17:12

What antibiotics are you on. I needed two types

CheshireKitten123 · 10/01/2022 17:14

You might have cellulitis - see GP tonight or A & E

GrimDamnFanjo · 10/01/2022 17:29

Always better to get a bite checked x

Throckmorton · 10/01/2022 17:35

I would say you need medical attention urgently for that

Mamamamasaurus · 10/01/2022 17:40

Get off MN. Get to hospital.

Whatdramain2022 · 10/01/2022 17:51

Looks like it's cellulitis. My DH has been in hospital with this three times. IV antibiotics. That's a dramatic spread like he had.

MeridianB · 10/01/2022 17:54

Hospital now, OP. Infected bites can lead to cellulitis (infection of the tissue) which is serious. If this is the case, hospital will probably give you IV antibiotics but you should act quickly,

Fabuleuse · 10/01/2022 17:58

I had something very similar on my leg recently. I don't know if it was a bite or a spot - I didn't notice I'd been bitten, but it was a very similar spread of redness. It was really sore! The NHS info about cellulitis (which I was also concerned about) says that your symptoms may worsen in the first 48 hours of treatment before they improve. www.nhs.uk/conditions/cellulitis/

I'm pretty sure mine was improving within 24 hours of starting Flucloxaccllin 500mg dose. If you are worried I would contact NHS24 for advice but maybe the antibiotics just need a little more time.

"I keep getting muscle cramps on my calf (where the bite was) and the red area has increased significantly since my phone call. I’m really worried, can’t straighten my leg, can barely walk and can’t get it comfortable....Am I expecting too much if the antibiotics?"

Yes, you're expecting too much of oral antibiotics - they take quite a few hours/days to work. With the symptoms you've got, I don't think you have time to wait and see if they're going to work. The fact that you're getting muscle cramps and can't straighten your leg or walk means that it's bad enough to want another review urgently.

If you do the 111online triage, they will contact you and give you an arrival time at either urgent care/minor injuries/A&E.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 10/01/2022 17:59

YANBU.

What bit you?

Snaketime · 10/01/2022 17:59

Do you know what bit you? It looks like a type of spider bite to me, I had one a couple of months ago, turned out it wasn't infected but I had an allergic reaction to the bite, but it depends what kind of spider bit you.
I would agree get to the hospital ASAP.

ohfourfoxache · 10/01/2022 17:59

A&E - now please

Maelstrom23 · 10/01/2022 18:06

Agree with A+E but do take an anti-histamine too. You should have been taking anti-histamines since the bite really.
