news.sky.com/story/jason-derulo-gets-into-fight-at-las-vegas-club-after-man-calls-him-usher-12509271

Obviously he shouldn’t have hit anyone but is being called or mistaken for Usher an insult? I would have thought Usher was a bigger star then Jason Derulo?

YABU - he was right to be annoyed
YANBU - it wasn’t an insult

Third option - reply if you haven’t heard of either

It could have been a reaction to an assumption that they thought he was Usher because both men are black.

Not that Usher looks anything like JD, in my opinion.

LampLighter414 · 05/01/2022 14:34

Calling someone the wrong name, whether intentionally trolling or not, does not justify being physically assaulted

Expect a legal case and big payout.

DysmalRadius · 05/01/2022 14:39

With the scant detail in that piece it really isn't clear how much provocation was involved, but a physical response is always inappropriate. I'm not sure it's about how famous or not someone is - I'm not famous at all, but I would still consider it an insult to be compared to certain well-known people!

madisonbridges · 05/01/2022 14:43

I've heard of Usher, maybe heard of Derulo but don't know who he is. I think the guy he attacked said some rude stuff so I can see why he was offended, but you can't hit people. End of.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 05/01/2022 14:49

Yes he was unreasonable to use violence.

But I think black and other minority ethnic people get tired of being mistaken for other black/ME people simply because of their skin colour. It’s lazy and (perhaps unintentionally) offensive.

I appreciate people may get equally as confused between Morgan Freeman/Samuel Jackson as Matt Damon/Mark Wahlberg but it definitely happens to non-white people more. At my workplace for example.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with who is more famous?

So completely wrong of Jason but perhaps a little understandable.

Greenfields124 · 05/01/2022 14:52

Yes he needs to learn to keep his hands to himself.

Freecuthbert · 05/01/2022 14:54

He was right to be annoyed, but physical violence is not okay.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/01/2022 14:58

JD looks absolutely nothing like Usher and is considerably younger - I think I'd be offended too! Not enough to hit someone mind but still pretty miffed especially if I thought they were doing it deliberately.

BodenseeBoden · 05/01/2022 15:03

To be fair, the guy seems to have shouted 'hey Usher, fuck you bitch',so maybe it wasn't the Usher part he got offended by

The guy who sang about having the "shits on the floor"? I read it as he was offended as someone mistook him for a member of cinema staff.

Mrsjayy · 05/01/2022 15:28

Jason durulo looks nothing like Usher ! I don't think he was unreasonable to react maybe not with violence but the person was racist and aggressive what was he supposed to do?

kazillionaire · 05/01/2022 15:28

I had a chuckle when I heard it, maybe they were deliberately insulting him 😂 these singers can be very precious!

CornishGem1975 · 05/01/2022 15:29

Unreasonable to punch someone but not unreasonable to be pissed off. Being mistaken for someone else when you're black seems to be quite common. They even portrayed that in the Sex and the City reboot recently.

FromEden · 05/01/2022 15:35

I dont think he was actually mistaken for usher. The guy was taking the piss

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 05/01/2022 15:43

Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg really do look alike - both have mentioned it in interviews and it's a thing all over the internet.

Morgan Freeman and Samuel L. Jackson, not so much. Maybe to a few people for some reason. Some have mistaken Samuel L. Jackson with Lawrence Fishburn too. The only thing the 3 of them share is similar skin tone.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 05/01/2022 15:48

Whilst I know the names I would be hard pressed to name a song and would have absolutely no idea what they look like.

It says someone swore at him and called him Usher. So maybe ...

Jason was wandering round acting like The Big I Am and someone, who may or may not have recognised him, said "Who the fuck do you think you are? Usher?"

Lottle · 05/01/2022 15:52

Makes me think of people mixing up Bruce springsteen and Rick Springfield. Rick wrote a song about it in the end which I always find very amusing.

Lottle · 05/01/2022 15:54

@Bananalanacake yes!!! Grin

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 05/01/2022 15:54

Jason was wandering round acting like The Big I Am and someone, who may or may not have recognised him, said "Who the fuck do you think you are? Usher?"

This doesn't sound like someone mistook him for Usher. It sounds like the person told him he's not (as big a star as) Usher so he should pipe down or something.

Immunetypegoblin · 05/01/2022 15:55

It sounds like the triggering incident was racist, for sure. Not sure punching was the right response but I understand his anger.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/01/2022 15:58

There were swear words and they've declined to press charges so I do wonder if maybe there were racism involve. D. However it's never OK to use our fists and they should have pressed charges if he did actually cause injury.

Horst · 05/01/2022 16:09

Well I mean usher was in all the papers at one point for knowingly having unprotected sex with not disclosing herpes or something wasn’t he.

I’d be insulted if someone thought I was that person. Likely way way more to the story though.

Did I sound like I was seriously offering an explanation? Grin

It's all bollocks. Usual violent reaction to the injured male ego!

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 05/01/2022 16:15

Ha! Yes I thought so.

I'm also thinking it's an ego trip because Usher is a bigger celebrity, IME. But there could be more to it than just being mistaken for Usher.
