Christmas decs

lollipoprainbow · 05/01/2022 10:39

I've decided to take all my Christmas decs down at the weekend due to work etc and having more time . Also the Christmas tree can't be taken for recycling until 18th Jan so I plan to take all the decorations off and just leave the lights on until it goes. Will I be cursed with awful luck?? I'm generally a very superstitious person.

I curse you. Awful luck. Until next Christmas.

PurpleDaisies · 05/01/2022 10:45

Mine came down New Year’s Day because I like to live dangerously!

Tal45 · 05/01/2022 10:45

Look up superstition in the dictionary, the definition is : a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief. It's just an irrational belief and if you're not religious 12th night has no meaning anyway.

I've started taking the decs off but will be leaving the tree and lights until at least the weekend. Do what works for you.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/01/2022 10:46

Funny how this alleged 'curse' doesn't affect those who put their tree up in fucking October... Nothing will happen if you leave it until the weekend, OP

NewBrownMouse · 05/01/2022 10:49

I think you'll have more luck by leaving it up as you plan to do
Extra days of twinkly lights are an added bonus and doing things when you have the time and it is convenient means less stress, less rushing means less risk of accidents so its a win win!

LethargicActress · 05/01/2022 10:50

Mine are already down and back in the loft as they always are by now, and I’m pretty sure I haven’t been cursed.

This. ^ If the 'must be down by 6th January' mantra is to be believed, then surely, the bloomin' Christmas decorations and tree shouldn't go up til Christmas Eve?!

Don't worry about it @lollipoprainbow It's all a load of superstitious crap.

EatYourVegetables · 05/01/2022 10:51

YABU for using the word “decs”. I curse you with whatever would annoy you as much as that word annoys me.

(See also “biccies”, “rellies” and similar abominations) Envy

Pirrip1868 · 05/01/2022 10:52

Mine came down on Monday. I’m not dead yet.

dementedpixie · 05/01/2022 10:55

Mine all went back up the loft yeaterday

dementedpixie · 05/01/2022 10:55

Yesterday

Bluebluemoon · 05/01/2022 10:55

I was taking some of my decs down yesterday only to be informed by dd's friend (age 8) that " you shouldn't be doing that until the 12th day"! I laughed and told her that I can't be doing with the dusting around them until then but it does beg the question why do we perpetuate these silly myths and superstitions by passing them on to our children?

Bluebluemoon · 05/01/2022 10:56

I actually annoyed myself when I typed that word! 🤣

TonyThreePies · 05/01/2022 10:57

Mine are staying up until the weekend too. I'd like to leave them up longer actually as I was away for the Christmas break so didn't really get to enjoy them.

You should have said 'actually HUN, it's twelfth NIGHT, not day. Also, I assume you don't put the trees and decorations UP til Christmas Eve???'

Too right @EatYourVegetables and @Bluebluemoon !!! Any sensible and intelligent person knows its DECOs, not decs! Grin
pigsDOfly · 05/01/2022 11:22

What about those of us who don't put any up in the first place?

Are there curses put on us by the Christmas Decoration Curser?

Teeturtle · 05/01/2022 11:24

I left mine up until February last year and here I am, living to tell the tale.

StationaryMagpie · 05/01/2022 11:33

take them down when you like.

The '12 days of christmas' is just another thing stolen from the Pagans.. the Yule festival traditionally lasts 12 days from Solstice, so technically, you should have them down by the end of NYD

We usually take ours down last day of school holidays, as they're always up mid december, 3 weeks is enough of them.

Blush21 · 05/01/2022 11:35

Well if you can’t take all down by tonight then you need to leave something until the 2nd of feb which is candlemas and then put it all away and perhaps light a candle and I believe place it in a window? Encourages any bad energy/spirits out and is meant to bring good luck from why I read a few weeks ago.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 05/01/2022 11:36

It's only bad luck if you take them down before 6th January. Any time afterwards is fine. I'd say leave them up in preparation for christmas 2022.

DillDanding · 05/01/2022 11:41

Don’t be daft, OP.

If anything goes wrong for you this year, are you going to think, ‘that’s because I left the tree up after 12th night..’?

That sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Superstitions are just nonsense and should be dismissed as such.

MorningStarling · 05/01/2022 12:20

The history books are full of people who met an untimely end after leaving their decorations up too long. I mean, I can't think of a single one off the top of my head, but there are thousands.

Thedogscollar · 05/01/2022 12:27

Bad luck doesn't happen because a tree with baubles and lights stayed up past it's sell by date.
It's all a load of tosh anyway OP.

I foresee you will have a wonderful year. Do you see how ridiculous it sounds nowGrin
I hope you do have a wonderful year though OP tree or no tree.

Badabingbadatinselbum · 05/01/2022 12:32

I was always lead to believe that to negate the bad luck of leaving them up past 12th night you had to leave at least one decoration up all year. I don't believe in the superstition but this seems like a very neat way of getting around it if you do!
