Fake carbs

postcardfromme · 31/12/2021 10:45

I've just seen a great thread about cutting out sugar. I need to do this as I have been eating my weight in cakes. I also love bread and can't stop myself despite putting on 3 stone over 2 years.
So I would like to know your fake carb ideas
I have a few;
Edamame spaghetti
Cauliflower rice

But I need more to inspire me!!

Not fake, but you can eat less of this than white rice. And it's nice and nutty and doesn't feel like deprivation. www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-lovelife-brown-basmati-wild-rice/054793-27537-27538

You can make a type of fake bread using flax seed and egg, it’s pretty convincing when you want something with a bit of solidity!

When I did keto I replaced breakfast cereal with keto Hana granola- very expensive for what it is but so delicious! I tried keto bread but thought it was rank, I replaced bread with slices of roast chicken. Sounds bananas but it’s so good dipped in soup! If you want something to replace crisps with try cheesies too… this thread has just reminded me about them, I’m going to order some!

Konjac based rice/pasta etc is great as a fake carb with dinner. You can get in Japanese food stores, also Holland & Barret but increasingly in some v big supermarkets. When you cook I recommend dry frying after boiling to get the water out (the water they come in doesn't taste amazing!)

Cauliflower mash

Mrstamborineman · 31/12/2021 11:03

Thin omelette wraps
Lettuce leaf wraps

Spagetti made with courgette (courgetti) or butternut squash (boodles). You can buy it ready-made or make your own easily with a julienne peeler. You can cube and roast low-carb vegetables (squash, courgette, mushrooms, celeriac etc) to replace potatoes.

This bread is delicious. We have it as a Sunday treat!

Love cheesies.

Have a look at the low carb bootcamp threads, they have some brilliant ideas

The low carb rolls and hot cross buns from here are really nice:

I don't like the texture of the sliced bread though, find it a bit rubbery. I prefer the LivLife sliced breads, though it's not as low carb. I also make my own low-carb rolls with almond flour, eggs and butter, though they're more scone-like in texture.

Aldi do two low-carbs spaghettis - a soy bean and a black bean one. I've tried the Bare Naked noodles but they give me a terrible stomach ache. I have a spiraliser to make my own courgetti, but Sainsburys do a microvable version which is fine.

I use erythritol and xylitol for baking sweet things, though I don't do that often, as it's better to wean yourself off sweet flavours altogether.

I've been low-carbing for nearly three years now, but have taken a deliberate two week over Christmas to eat whatever I want. Looking forward to getting back on it next week though!

JaneyJimplin · 31/12/2021 11:11

Placemarking.

My offering is unsweetened almond milk is significantly lower in carbs than dairy.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 31/12/2021 11:16

I always said I couldn't cut out bread as I love it too much but having done three months no carbs I can honestly say I don't miss it. I now have it (exc Xmas!) On the weekends only and treat myself to an artisan bread or something to make it worthwhile! I find any fake carbs don't work for me. Loads of help on the weight loss board.

Beetroot chips are gorgeous with a bit of chilli. Carrot chips also lovely.

hugr · 31/12/2021 11:21

That sweet potato toast was popular a few years ago and I thought was quite tasty

HereticFanjo · 31/12/2021 11:24

Iceland do great cauliflower rice and broccoli rice. It's delicious with curries etc.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 31/12/2021 11:27

Celeriac mash is really good

I looked this up and sweet potato has actually got quite a lot of carbs 🤦‍♀️
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/12/2021 11:34

Oh yes, can't believe I forgot celeriac mash, love it!

I also find spinach wilted in chilli oil is a delicious base for a curry when I don't fancy cauli rice.

CeCeSchmidt · 31/12/2021 11:39

Celeriac rice
Zoodles/courgetti
Carrot and courgette ribbons

User2638483 · 31/12/2021 13:22

I found as an occasional thing that salt n vinegar KP peanuts were a great replacement for my beloved salt and vinegar crisps.
Also salt and vinegar pork scratchings although I found it hard not to eat them excessively

User2638483 · 31/12/2021 13:22

Probably because the flavouring had a slight sweetness.

User2638483 · 31/12/2021 13:23

Cream based sauces instead of a roux white sauce with flour

User2638483 · 31/12/2021 13:23

Eg for cheese sauce just heat cream to just below boiling then add cheese

2022newname · 31/12/2021 15:00

I’m a huge courgetti fan. I’ve not tried it but know someone who uses cauliflower as a pizza base and says it’s ok

GoldilocksZone · 31/12/2021 15:32

My courgette is always watery and flat and gross :-(
