Birds twittering now

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 31/12/2021 02:49

I am in Northern England and for the last few days I have noticed that birds are tweeting at this time of night (2.50am) I thought birds only sang at dusk and dawn not in the middle of the night! Is anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, here too!

foxgoosefinch · 31/12/2021 02:56

SE England. Here too - I’ve noticed it for the last few days. Is it the temperature? It’s been unseasonably warm this week.

Lbnc2021 · 31/12/2021 02:56

I’ve noticed this for a few weeks now, I’m in Scotland. They’ve been out tweeting away since about midnight. I read somewhere that it means they are confused 🤔 what would they be confused about 🤷🏻‍♀️

Rhannion · 31/12/2021 02:57

Yes here as well in Scotland from about midnight and still going, it’s strange but pleasant to hear.

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 31/12/2021 03:20

It is strange @Rhannion and it does unnerve me, I wondered if it was to do with climate change or something. It has been quite cold where I am @foxgoosefinch, between 2 and 5 degrees C

Also interesting it seems to be a UK nationwide thing

Not here in Manchester - very quiet outside.

spudjulia · 31/12/2021 03:28

Yes, heard them chirping at 2am here - east mids and currently 14 degrees!

LibbyVonTrap · 31/12/2021 03:32

Yes! I’ve noticed it for a week or so. It’s confusing as I hear them and think it must be getting on for 6am only to get up and discover it’s 3am!! (Like this morning!)

samwitwicky · 31/12/2021 03:33

I imagine the temperature has a lot to do with it? East Mids, 13 degrees right now

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 31/12/2021 03:33

Yes! Same here. I heard them when I went out for a late dog walk and I got so confused. What does it mean?

heather2908 · 31/12/2021 03:36

I’m wide awake and listening to the birds (I’m in Yorkshire). It’s very strange.

Monty27 · 31/12/2021 03:37

Yes yes yes. I have felt confused when taking stuff out to the bin late at night in London. Birdsong like it's dawn.

lotusgirl909 · 31/12/2021 03:42

Birds sing at night.

Blackbirds

Robins

Nightingales

Few more too.

They're telling other birds to politely do one.

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2021 03:44

Also happening in Ireland, I can hear them chirping away now.

It's a thing, I've seen a few threads about it recently on here.

TheGrinchsDog · 31/12/2021 03:44

They can feel the mother ships arriving from deep orbit Wink

I actually noticed this tonight at about 1am

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 31/12/2021 03:50

@TheGrinchsDog

It did feel like a sci-fi film, was half expecting something scary to appear in the sky.

Wish I was asleep now anyway!

anotherchocolate · 31/12/2021 03:54

Scotland here, and there's a full-scale avian choir going on outside.

Monty27 · 31/12/2021 03:55

But how come we haven't noticed it in the early hours before?
ThinWomansBrain · 31/12/2021 03:59

I dtarted noticing it a few weeks ago - central London.
thought I was going mad in that I didn't remember it in previous years.

ThinWomansBrain · 31/12/2021 04:01

as well as being milder, there's a lot less traffic - at one point I thought that maybe I'd not noticed before because of traffic

PurpleSapphire · 31/12/2021 04:22

I thought the same thing earlier. We have one, i'm unsure what type of bird it is but it sounds like a nagging wife. Heard it tonight way after dark.

1forAll74 · 31/12/2021 04:27

I have sometimes seen very active and twittering birds, in the trees that surround service station car parks, at all times in the middle of the night, because of all the lights being on.

SonicBroom · 31/12/2021 04:37

Following to see if anyone can explain!

TheWokeyCokey · 31/12/2021 04:41

It's because of all the new security light systems etc that people are installing - it's knocking everything out of sync

Particularly when they are left on all night
