Birds twittering now

I am in Northern England and for the last few days I have noticed that birds are tweeting at this time of night (2.50am) I thought birds only sang at dusk and dawn not in the middle of the night! Is anyone else experiencing this?

Where I lived previously the birds started between 2-3am every night without fail all year round.
We've moved to be more rural and I don't hear them during the night at all. The trees/boundary is further away so unsure whether it's just because they're further away from my window and don't sit in the guttering at this house.
Although we're more rural there's actually busier roads here and it's noisier at night due to the heavier traffic and lorries etc.

Cos it's the perfect time to shout to other birds about how big their birdy willies are?

NewYearCalavicci · 31/12/2021 05:37

@WiddlinDiddlin and his mates saying yeah right , you have just stuffed a worm down your trousers feathers Grin

CheshireDing · 31/12/2021 05:44

All quiet here at 5.40am and we are surrounded by trees

I do think people should switch off all the security lights/similar they have in overnight as it’s not good for wildlife

Themusicis0utside · 31/12/2021 06:14

It's caused by a couple of things - the milder winter we are having, coupled with increasing man-made light pollution.

BooseysMom · 31/12/2021 06:28

I always think birds in cities with all-night lighting must never sleep. We never hear any singing at night here apart from tawny owls calling to each other.

vodkaginwine · 31/12/2021 06:33

Yes. They start at 1am where we are. I thought I was imagining it for a few nights. I read a theory that it is down to light pollution so they are confused and out of their natural rhythm as when one starts they all start. Who knows.

What an interesting thread! I’m quite jealous because I hardly ever hear birds at any time of day as I live in a town centre with no trees although there’s plenty of green space nearby. Poor birdies, they must be all over the place what with the crazy mild weather and awful security lights that some people leave on all night!

maddiemookins16mum · 31/12/2021 06:57

I’m working today so up at 5.30, the birds were at it then.

OddBoots · 31/12/2021 06:59

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago and I think one of the ideas is that it was happening in areas where the streetlights had been changed to the new LED ones.

TooManyAnimals94 · 31/12/2021 07:03

South East here and will often hear birds from about 2am. Sometimes they shut up again for a while start back up around 5. Only noticed it when I started night shifts about 3 years ago and I work on the outskirts if a town so could be light pollution causing it I suppose.
I assumed that's just what birds do and I'm not usually awake to hear it!

Gonnagetgoing · 31/12/2021 07:16

Not sure if we haven’t noticed it before but definitely in past couple of weeks noticed them tweeting from 2am onwards on and off, in SE London.

@TooManyAnimals94 - same area and same conclusion just assumed that’s what the birds do. At that time.

Started a few weeks ago here (London). I know this because I didn't not have a cat flap so one of my cats is desperate to go out once she hears the birds. Due to lack of traffic noise, they are very loud. Starts from around 1.30 it seems.

Itonlytakesonetree · 31/12/2021 07:21

Didn't not? Don't

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 31/12/2021 17:29

Thank you everyone. Apologies that I must have missed the thread a few weeks ago about this. I think the security lights thing sounds most to blame. We live opposite a church whose security lights are on and off all night due to wildlife setting them off and there are loads of trees around (presumably with birds in them) so this is probably highly likely to be the reason
