YABU you don't know about the new rules
YANBU you did know about the new rules

I did

overnightangel · 31/12/2021 07:02

It’s your own responsibility as a driver to keep up to date with any changes, you effectively sign a contract to that effect by having a driving licence

jevoudrais · 31/12/2021 07:15

YANBU

loudbatperson · 31/12/2021 07:31

I am shocked at how many threads about this, all surprised at the new rules.

I have seen many articles over the last few months.

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2021 07:34

@loudbatperson I hadn’t seen any other threads about this on mumsnet

OP posts:
RaininSummer · 31/12/2021 07:34

I haven't seen anything about this so thanks for posting.

Snowiscold · 31/12/2021 07:37

I didn’t know about it until I read the other thread on it. But to be fair, I don’t drive, or cycle.

onedayoranother · 31/12/2021 07:44

No I haven't read or heard about them, and I read a newspaper and have radio 4 on constantly! Having googled them though, most are what I thought were rules already (not using phone while at the wheel for any reason, giving way to pedestrians etc).

ErrolTheDragon · 31/12/2021 07:52

YANBU, but only because I saw a thread on MN a week or two ago.

MintJulia · 31/12/2021 07:57

There are several threads on here. I've seen news articles on the BBC (tv & website), and I've had leaflets from my breakdown service and from the local council.

It's been hard to avoid here !

ShakespearesSisters · 31/12/2021 08:13

I'd not seen anything except a post on mumsnet about a month ago which I'd forgotten about until there was this and another this morning.
There was loads of stuff about not using phones for photos etc recently (how was that not banned previously when you could be for talking on it?) but I've not seen anything about this one.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 31/12/2021 08:20

Yes, I knew about them, in fact I responded to the consultation on it.

InTheLabyrinth · 31/12/2021 08:28

I only knew about it from a thread here.
Not seen anything from anywhere else.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 31/12/2021 08:31

Well, I knew but only from here!

ShakespearesSisters · 31/12/2021 08:36

Just asked DH. He didn't know. His reply was sounds stupid.

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2021 09:23

ShakespearesSisters I’d certainly disagree with mobile device use, don’t think that stupid

Many drivers already ignore rule 206 and I doubt they’re aware that this is just tweaking the rules

I knew and it doesn't seem like a massive big deal. The effect of the change is that we should consider that there's an imaginary zebra crossing at the neck of every T junction and should slow down and stop if needed accordingly. Many of the roads I drive along have side roads with actual zebra crossings at the neck and they aren't particularly more of a problem than others. All drivers and cuclists who are obeying other guidance like maintaining awareness of other road and pavement users, giving clear signals, driving slow enough that they are never driving on road they haven't had a good look at and know that the road is clear for the length of their stopping distance, will find the new guidance to be no extra bother at all.

2TurtleDovesInARow · 31/12/2021 09:43

I only know about it because of previous threads on it Blush

PlayItCool · 31/12/2021 09:47

This is the first I've heard of it - so thanks! Off to google it now

Mogul · 31/12/2021 10:14

Worries me no one on here has mentioned the change regarding đriving around horses

MakeUsACuppa · 31/12/2021 10:26

YANBU, first I heard about it was on here.

Didn't think I lived under a stone, I listen to radio 4, watch the news and read online newspapers. Granted the past week I've been in a no news Christmas bubble but they can't have released the new rules just in the past week.

Off to google and appraise myself of the new rules!

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 31/12/2021 10:43

Give way to pedestrians waiting to cross at junctions.... so stopped
and standing, rather than approaching

Kids from the local primary all stand and wait until parents behind have caught up..... so we have to wait until parent is there and they can all cross together?

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2021 12:21

yes, otherwise you might have a situation of driving into any people that don't stop = people walk will have priority

OP posts:
Grumpyosaurus · 31/12/2021 12:35

I was vaguely aware.
I'm not convinced that stopping for pedestrians waiting to cross is necessarily a good idea. I live in a small town with some turns with limited sightlines - you can't see very far ahead as you're turning, so you're moving slowly, but you are moving. It's going to be very easy to rear-ended in those situations, esp the one I have in mind which is by a major bottleneck.

As for the rest, fair enough. A lot of drivers are imbeciles around horses.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 31/12/2021 12:41

Yeah, but there is also an obligation on the government to make an easy task find announcement about the changes.

I am aware that there are changes, something that gives pedestrians and cyclists more road priority, but not the details.

Nor have I found an easy to understand precis of those changes. Just a lot of hot air moaning about them being daft, incomprehensible.

That, in my opinion makes it more incumbent on them to clarify the changes somewhere far more visibly.
