To pledge to not save anything for “best” in 2022!

I’m a scruff.
I have nice clothes, only cheap stuff, charity shops and some things from next.
I always, always have clothes for “best” and clothes for every day.
But no. In 2022 I’m going to wear everything in my wardrobe no matter what the day is.
This is mostly due to never going anywhere to wear my “best” clothing!!
😩
Do you do this or do you always look lovely in niace clothes?

Such a great resolution, I might do the same. I did this a few years back for household items so I now use the nice bubble bath, the fancy glasses etc.

Rainartist · 30/12/2021 19:18

I've been terrible for this over the years and am going to try the same.

RelapsedChocoholic · 30/12/2021 19:26

Iys a great idea op!

I found myself ‘saving’ certain clothes when I was younger, but have largely trained myself out of it! I mix in the niace bits with my normal stuff, so probably look a bit random sometimes but I’m too old to care now!
(And I do still have some shoes I only wear on certain occasions due to not being able to walk very well in them Grin)

Veryverycalmnow · 30/12/2021 19:29

Good plan! I might copy this idea

AnxiousHeffalump · 30/12/2021 19:30

I don’t have any nice clothes for best 🤣

LittleGungHo · 30/12/2021 19:37

I am going to do the same but with toiletries as well. I have so many posh bubble baths and things than never get used.

thebellagio · 30/12/2021 19:37

Definitely do this. I’ve recently been clearing out a family members house, and it’s scary how much stuff was “saved for best” and rarely used, yet wasn’t worth more than a £15 job lot on FB marketplace. Think things like stem crystal glassware or a canteen of posh cutlery that’s only used at Xmas etc.

My motto now is use absolutely everything that you buy while you can.

Divebar2021 · 30/12/2021 19:40

Good idea. Why don’t you also make some arrangements so you have somewhere to wear all these nice clothes?

TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 30/12/2021 19:41

Fantastic idea!

I did this today by wearing a top that I love. I never wear it because I am worried it will get stained. I’m not even sure what it is I think is going to stain it. It’s not like I was changing the oil in my car Grin

KohlaParasaurus · 30/12/2021 19:43

Excellent decision Grin I've been working on doing this for the past couple of years and it's surprisingly challenging.

Loudestcat14 · 30/12/2021 19:45

Terrific idea!

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2021 19:46

Ooh good idea! I'm going to join you. Not just clothes, but my nice household items as well. I think I'll start by keeping out my gorgeous glassware that only gets used at Christmas.

gosling24 · 30/12/2021 19:48

Why not? You probably look much neater than many of the people in this country.

SilverOtter · 30/12/2021 19:56

Me too!

I'm also going to try not to buy any clothing brand new this year, apart from knickers.

TurquoiseDragon · 30/12/2021 19:59

I remember a similar thread pre--covid.

It was sad in a way. So many older people saving for best, and their children finding so much good stuff unused when they passed away. Things ranging from good linens to clothes, crockery, cutlery, toiletries. Is there an underlying feeling that people don't feel they deserve whatever it is?

I made the promise then that I wouldn't do the same. Because who can define what "best" actually is? If you have something nice and don't use it, it's essentially wasted. Perfume in particular goes off after a while, which also affects toiletries.

So I use nice stuff, eg, I have a nice tea set. A friend tried to say it was too good to use every day, buut I use it every day because I won't use it otherwise.

Mummylovesmonkeys · 30/12/2021 23:16

I love this. I hadn't thought of it before, but it makes terrific sense! Let's go!

Coffeeisnecessary · 30/12/2021 23:19

I need to do this too! I live in jeans/jumpers but have some lovely skirts which I'm saving for best, I need to mix it up!!

Mummylovesmonkeys · 30/12/2021 23:21

And also have a major clear out - don't wear - GO! Doesn't fit - GO! Doesn't suit - GO! Shoes hurt - GO GO GO!

KrispyBrussels · 30/12/2021 23:22

A great idea, OP.

Ericaequites · 30/12/2021 23:26

Use and enjoy your nice things; don’t save them for an occasion that never comes. When my father’s mother had to leave her home for a nursing home, she was sleeping on sides to middle mended sheets that were hand me downs from her brother’s rental linen service. There were three sets of lovely pink no iron sheets in her drawer, still in factory cellophane. She was saving those for when she “got old.”

2catsandhappy · 03/01/2022 14:00

Almost the opposite thing for me today. My much loved Italian leather boots, super sexy and well worn. Realised they are just beyond the regular care and repair they get. Binned.
I think knowing when to let go, when something has had its time, is just as important as using lovely things reguarly and with joy.
I use 1920's china, daily.

Hippywannabe · 03/01/2022 14:39

Do it!
I have lost 60lbs and have had to take a load of never worn clothes to the charity shop. Now I am wearing everything as I continue my weightloss journey.
Enjoy the things you have!!
There was a great thread a few years ago about this if somone can link it.
People posted on it after Xmas when they used something. It was lovely.

MatildaTheCat · 03/01/2022 14:45

God yes…wear things and enjoy them.

My MIL had a whole room for ‘best’. She was forever trying to get me to ban the DC from the sitting room! My view was that the house was for living in. When she died she had lots of nice clothes she’d barely worn.

Mermaidwaves · 03/01/2022 15:01

Me too! I have a drawer full of nice but casual dresses, do I wear them? No! I wear the three same ultra comfy black jersey dresses day in and day out, I look like I never wash my clothes!

This year I will wear a different dress each day so they all get an airing, I probably have enough so I have a fresh dress for every day of the month. It's so ridiculous that I find this so hard to do!

Hippywannabe · 03/01/2022 19:30

I havealready gotten out a beautiful black dress or school.tomorrow based on this thread.
