To expect my DH not to nod off at inlaws?

Almost every time we visit he nods off sitting on the sofa, leaving me to make the small talk.
FFS!!!

Is the house a lot hotter than yours? Do you visit at the same time, after work etc?

Shoxfordian · 27/12/2021 16:42

Yanbu

Go to sleep too

icedcoffees · 27/12/2021 16:43

Poke him.

WakeUpLockie · 27/12/2021 16:44

Wake him up. I would be fuming but my FIL is toxic.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 27/12/2021 16:44

His dps? Maybe he knows they are boring!!

Suprima · 27/12/2021 16:44

I wouldn’t be making small talk- I’d be having a snooze and putting my feet up myself

I don’t do small talk with family- at my ILs and with mine, we make ourselves at home and just enjoy each other’s company…tea, telly, watch a film, play a game

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 27/12/2021 16:44

Another vote for giving him a good poke and making him a strong coffee

Suprima · 27/12/2021 16:45

Or sometimes have a nap!

ihatethecold · 27/12/2021 16:45

Are they yours or his parents?

whatatool · 27/12/2021 16:47

His parents!

OP posts:
Dweetfidilove · 27/12/2021 17:01

Maybe he just finds their home very relaxing.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 27/12/2021 17:06

Suprima that's the ideal isn't it.
Just feeling at home and not formally being offered bloody tea!

Lindaloo08 · 27/12/2021 19:27

Mine does that in my parents house and I find it really embarrassing. He has never in 10 years visited my family and not fallen asleep. When we go to his parents it's 50/50 with him sleeping and I'm left doing the chats. Very annoying!

Shouldofgotahamster85 · 27/12/2021 19:41

Id be waking him up… every single time!

SpiderFluff · 27/12/2021 19:43

Poke him every time

Roselilly36 · 27/12/2021 19:44

Sorry OP, but your post really made me laugh, I could just picture the scene! 😂

Newuser82 · 27/12/2021 19:45

Mine does that too but particularly at my parents house! It’s so annoying and embarrassing.

AntiHop · 27/12/2021 19:45

That would seriously piss me off

BabyPotato · 27/12/2021 19:51

Mine did that occasionally. Sometimes he even took himself into one of the guest rooms and had a cheeky hour's kip. I used to find it excruciating because his mum would be wondering why he'd left me all alone. But to be fair this was always when we'd spend the whole day there anyway and go for walks and stuff so it was kind of understandable. We got on well and I now have my kid to entertain so it wasn't that bad.

We have now fallen out with DH's stepdad so won't be going over ever again so I guess this napping thing will no longer be a problem...

Immunetypegoblin · 27/12/2021 19:55

That sounds really frustrating OP!

Next time you go, beat him to the punch and doze off first (or pretend to). The results of this will be illuminating/hilarious (or he might just not care and go to sleep anyway)

Normski67 · 27/12/2021 19:57

Tell him if he does it you are going to purposefully close your eyes and go to sleep too, then PIL will be left talking to themselves.

beenthereboughtthetshirt · 27/12/2021 20:07

no point going at all if he just nods off everytime

CoffeeRunner · 27/12/2021 20:11

Is he eating a big meal first each time? With alcohol possibly?

I'd struggle not to nod off in those circumstances, which is why I always offer to drive (so am not offending by refusing wine etc) and usually opt to get involved with the board games, washing up etc.

Iggyplop · 27/12/2021 20:14

Ah bless him, mine did exactly the same in mid conversation with my mum on Christmas day. A sign of a very contented man 🤣

MaizeBlouse · 27/12/2021 20:17

My sisters partner does this and I find it so unattractive. Also makes it awkward for everyone else if someone is sleeping in the room. And it's all bloody men isn't it?
