Where are all the Christmas Day walkers?

I feel like lots of people say a walk is part of their Christmas Day routine...

But I feel like when DH, kids an I go out for a walk on Christmas Day there is literally no one else out. We went for a walk today after breakfast (10:30am-12pm-ish), saw maybe 4 people. Our route includes walking along fields and through our market town. We're in the south east. And it's pretty much always been like this.

AIBU to think it's all talk and not that many people actually go for a walk on Christmas Day?

Probably depends on weather. It's been wet here so that won't help. Still saw a few though. Mostly walking dogs.

greenlynx · 25/12/2021 22:03

We went for a walk after Strictly Special. I usually like walking a bit later when all lights are on.
We saw no one but it’s quite cold.

CeibaTree · 25/12/2021 22:03

We went for a walk around 1pm in our local woods and there were loads of people out and about.

AFingerofFudge · 25/12/2021 22:08

I read that as "Christmas Day wankers" and thought I could have offered a few suggestions Grin

EBearhug · 25/12/2021 22:08

Lots of people out with dogs here, and a couple of proper walkers with rucksacks.

Our park was packed at 10:30 am. Couldn’t even park!

malificent7 · 25/12/2021 22:11

Oh gosh i cannot MOVE after Christmas dinner despite my love of walking!

BabyPotato · 25/12/2021 22:12

We went at around 3.30pm. I guess people just do it at different times. 🤷 I wouldn't go out of my way to go for a walk on Christmas day mind. I like spending Christmases indoors in my jim jams. 😁 I thought boxing day was the day when everyone is out.

45redballoons · 25/12/2021 22:13

We went out about 12 and it was quite busy. We don't go particularly long walks on Christmas day, an hour max, I imagine most people are the same so that might be part of why you don't see lots of people maybe.

ChrissyPlummer · 25/12/2021 22:13

We went out about 12, have a dog though so had to. It’s been really cold and windy here and is now raining. Wouldn’t have set foot outside if I hadn’t had a dog to walk.

PlanetNormal · 25/12/2021 22:14

I did a quick 6km walk just after the Queen’s speech. Lovely to get moving & a bit of fresh air.

Justcannotbearsed · 25/12/2021 22:15

It was blowing a gale and cold where we were. Took the dogs out for an hour and saw a few people mostly other dog walkers.

On a nice Christmas Day we’ve seen lots and lots of people out on the beach.

Kite22 · 25/12/2021 22:15

a) It's been persisting down here all day, so if it was the same where you are, then that will affect numbers

b) I associate 'going for a walk on Christmas Day' as getting a bit of fresh air and exercise after a big heavy Christmas dinner and a shed load of chocolate. I don't think we are unusual in that we would be opening presents and cooking the dinner in the morning.

ivykaty44 · 25/12/2021 22:16

I went out for a cycle ride this morning, started at 8am as it was getting light and there were a few solo walkers out. I only did 12 miles but probably 12 walkers out and a horse rider I was home not long after 9

perhaps you missed them as were out later

Wolfiefan · 25/12/2021 22:17

We have dogs. We were out late morning. Wet and blowy and yuck. But I loved it!!

TheSmallAssassin · 25/12/2021 22:18

I'm cooking Christmas dinner at that point. Then we're eating, then it's getting dark. I like a Boxing Day walk 😊

stalkersaga · 25/12/2021 22:18

I was out for a run around 1030am. I saw loads of walkers, most with dogs, and a few other runners. It pissed it down for some hours after that so that undoubtedly put many off.

RickyZooom · 25/12/2021 22:22

Who’s doing the cooking whilst you’re waking OP? I would love to go out for a walk but I’m always elbow-deep in sprouts by that point. I’m tempted to chuck it all in the slow cooker one year and get outside!

Returnoftheowl · 25/12/2021 22:22

We've done two walks today, but that's due to having a dog. One early in the morning, one in the afternoon - 1030-noon might not be prime dog walking time (I was too busy getting Christmas lunch ready at that time!)

OfMinceAndMen · 25/12/2021 22:23

This was our first year ever that we didn't go for a walk, because it's been torrentially raining.

Sloth66 · 25/12/2021 22:24

Walked this evening, hardly saw anyone but pretty cold and damp here

Dita73 · 25/12/2021 22:30

Loads in our village most of the day and evening

I put the turkey in when we got back at 12pm.

I prep all the veg the night before so it's just a case of putting everything else in the oven at the right time. We were sat eating at 1.45pm.

I went out for a run this morning, but it was raining so wasn’t surprised not to see many out.
