Worrying about cooking the turkey! Argh. Have googled about 10 recipes and methods and head is in a spin. Have never done a whole turkey before and bricking it!

I thought I’d decided and now not sure. Got loads of family coming over and the pressure is on

I'm here!

We had our Xmas meal last night so I have no idea why I'm awake tho!

Age I guess

MrsPnut · 25/12/2021 05:39

I woke up at 3:10 again, finally got up at 4:30. I’ve been on steroids all week so have had plenty of practice at the early waking malarkey.

Turkey takes less time to cook than it says on the packet, use the Good Food roast timer to calculate how long.

Chilllichutneyandcheese · 25/12/2021 05:39

The kids will be up soon so no more sleep for me! Will be snoozing over the turkey later!

OP posts:
Chilllichutneyandcheese · 25/12/2021 05:41

Already did that and it’s just 10 mins less than the packet. Will keep checking it to see

Chilllichutneyandcheese · 25/12/2021 05:43

I want a cuppa but don’t want to wake kids on way past their room! Can’t deal with present excitement just yet!

DS2 woke up at 4.30 and is a toddler so unfortunately not much I can do to get him to chill and be quiet 🤦🏻‍♀️😆 waiting for DS1 to get up so we can get this show on the road

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 25/12/2021 05:43

Ps Merry Christmas everyone!

itsgettingwierd · 25/12/2021 05:46

I'm awake too!

No worries about dinner or executed toddlers here (ds is 17!).

But I'm use to getting up at 4 as he's a swimmer and also working in a job I'm fairly active (I'm on AL) so I'm going to bed at usual time of 9/9.30, not sleeping as well and waking early because I'm use to it 🤣

Minoan was to start walking loads after Boxing Day to induce tiredness but it looks like it's gonna rain forever!

Jumpingintochristmas · 25/12/2021 05:46

DD popped her head in at 5am to say she can’t sleep… she’s now back in bed, everyone is snoring away and I’m wide awake. Bloody menopause!

Merry Christmas everyone.
My tip with the turkey is you can never use too much butter!!!

whatkatydid2013 · 25/12/2021 05:47

You can rest Turkey wrapped in foil for ages and it doesn’t get cold so put it in sooner than you think you need to and then if you check and juices aren’t running clear from thickest part you can put back in for a bit longer. We’ve always followed this:
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/classic-roast-turkey/amp
In my experience though you can rest it for over an hour & it will still be hot to serve. We always go for around a 6-8kg one. You’ll be fine

IpanemaPeaHen · 25/12/2021 05:48

I’ve been awake since 4am. Don’t know why as we have a quiet day ahead (covid positive dc). I’m contemplating a cup of tea and raiding the Christmas tree chocolate. Don’t want to wake anyone though Xmas Blush

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 25/12/2021 05:48

@itsgettingwierd

executed toddlers what a typo 😆

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 25/12/2021 05:49

Cake for breakfast is fine isn’t it?

whatkatydid2013 · 25/12/2021 05:50

Also Happy Christmas all. Other half woke me an hour ago then promptly went back to sleep and left me wide awake but am also stuck in bed as I don’t want to wake the kids

Imissmoominmama · 25/12/2021 05:51

I’m awake too- have been for most of the night because I drank too much sherry and my head hurts.

We always go for a Christmas morning hike, but it’s blowing a hooley out there and I’m worrying about trees coming down. Everyone else is still asleep.

MrsPnut · 25/12/2021 05:53

Mine thankfully are much older so nothing will wake them. I’ll probably have been out to walk the dogs before they surface.
Just made a second coffee and the dog is barking because she wants the leftover cat food from upstairs, I could let her go up and she can wake the rest of the house or I can potter down here in peace.

Oddbutnotodd · 25/12/2021 05:56

BBC good food is a good resource for turkey timings. Not helpful to you but we have a meat thermometer that we use. Cooking earlier to allow turkey to rest us always a good idea. Just put tea towels over a clean layer of foil while you cook roast potatoes.

Happy Christmas 🎅

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 25/12/2021 05:57

Also have a cold (not covid - neg PCR) and this morning cannot smell due to cold. So I guess I won’t be able to taste any of the food I’m about to spend hours cooking snd look forward to all year. All tips for regaining smell welcome 🤦🏻‍♀️😳

Chilllichutneyandcheese · 25/12/2021 06:00

Merry Christmas everyone. Good to know there are lots of us up and about and ready for the day! Hope you all have a great day!

I went to bed at 1... Awake at 4 Xmas Confused God knows how I'm going to get through today but it's nice to see other people are in exactly the same boat.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas. Here's hoping we all get a nice little nap in at some point Xmas Grin

Solasum · 25/12/2021 06:04

@Chilllichutneyandcheese happy Christmas! Just treat the Turkey as you would a chicken, but add extra moisture. If you can cook chicken you can cook Turkey. Smile

fruitypancake · 25/12/2021 06:04

Another one wide awake since 5 ish..

BorderlineHappy · 25/12/2021 06:07

Must be something in the water as I'm awake since about 2.30.
Going to cook my turkey now.
Just have to lock up my mad cats😂.
Otherwise there will be no turkey for anyone.
