Can 'The Pill' make you feel this sick?

Sorry, another Pill one. Posting for traffic.

Had the coil for years but had to have it removed due to pelvic issues unfortunately. I'm now stuck with the pill.

I was given the mini pill that caused large cyst like boils, then a second that caused spots all over my face. I'm on my 3rd pill in the space of 6 weeks (the first one I tried for 3 months before switching).

I've been on Yasmin 4 days and I feel awful. I know the Pill can cause nausea and I experienced the same with the other pills but this is worse. I'm completely lacking in energy to do anything, been feeling very sick and off food (I was sick this evening) and having hot flushes and feel light headed! Sis anyone else feel like this on a new Pill?

Oh and I wish I hadn't started this pill as I feel awful and I'm now dreading an Xmas of cooking and traveling!

Combined pills can make you feel a bit sickly at first, don't take it on an empty stomach.

DrNo007 · 24/12/2021 23:11

Yes it had that effect on me but never went away as long as I was on it — 9 months. In the end I couldn’t stand it any longer and came off it but for decades after, I had terrible nausea mid cycle. I was finally cured by fairly aggressive natural medicine therapies.

LizzieSiddal · 24/12/2021 23:16

Yes it had that effect on me, I tried several and it was awful. My sister was the same.

Thirtytimesround · 24/12/2021 23:19

I tried the pill. Vomited every day for months. Concluded that the pill is not for me! Big fan of condoms now.

Hothammock · 24/12/2021 23:24

Vasectomies are the way to go. Why do women end up with these awful hormone therapies. Men wouldn't put up with it.

HairyFanjoBanjo · 24/12/2021 23:28

Just stop, use condoms!

Techno56 · 24/12/2021 23:32

This happened to me on pills with 30mg (or mcg ..can't remember) oestrogen. Was ok with the ones that had 20, so might be worth asking for a lower dose.

junebirthdaygirl · 24/12/2021 23:34

I couldn't take the pill as made me too sick. Same sickness s pregnancy sickness which l suffered a lot from. It's horrible.

SFHJ · 24/12/2021 23:35

The pill mimicked hypermesis with me. I reacted very badly and was very sick. Years later when I was pregnant exactly the same

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/12/2021 23:39

Have you done any pregnancy tests since changing over?

It might be a plan if you haven't - just to eliminate one reason for nausea coming within six weeks of starting a new method of contraception.

Notonthenewrug · 25/12/2021 00:40

Thanks all for the input and sorry you've also had issues!

I loved the coil (apart from the fact it potentially caused chronic pelvic pain). As for condoms, I've not used them for years! I find them a bit of a hassle, especially being in a long term relationship. Also, when I've used them in the past, several times they slipped off inside me and I had to take the morning after pill.

I've suggested a vasectomy and he's not keen 🙄 I've said this is the last pill I'm trying though!

Not done a pregnancy test as it's very unlikely. I do have all the early pregnancy symptoms but I know this can happen when starting a new Pill and has done in the past.

One question, which will make me look stupid ...
If you miss a pill you can become pregnant. How does your body know if you've just missed a pill or going to have a week break? I had my week break before starting my new pill but took it a week early (wanted to switch pills). Which I have read is completely fine. However if I had randomly missed a pill and took one a day or 2 later, it counts as a missed pill.

When I first took the combined pill i threw up continually fit 2 days. I was totally five after that.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 25/12/2021 02:43

Normally when you change brands, you're supposed to not have a break and go straight on in case you aren't protected?

This may have changed since I had DD on the Pill but poas could be worth it.

Graphista · 25/12/2021 03:41

My first thought with all the chopping and changing of contraception- are you sure you aren't pregnant?

If you can definitely rule that out then it may be the pill. I was fine on Yasmin but a lot of people aren't it's one of those that doesn't suit many

If you're actually throwing up remember you'll need to use something else as you won't be absorbing it

Notonthenewrug · 25/12/2021 10:53

@neverdropyourmooncup and @Graphista gosh I hope I haven't messed it up!!

I read online that you can take a week break anywhere in your pack if you wish to change the date of your period. So I had my week break a week early then gave my body a rest, which was lovely because my skin started to clear!
Then I started Yasmin. I assumed I'd be ok 😬

Do a test to rule pregnancy out. But yes I can’t take the pill, makes me feel so poorly.

I can tolerate the rod though, the nurse told me it releases the weakest amount of hormones.

Graphista · 25/12/2021 11:40

You've done a lot of messing about there!

The advice generally is a minimum of 7 days solid on new pill before unprotected sex but that's a minimum and without the messing about.

I'd have waited until on it at least a month. Actually since falling pregnant on the pill 30 years ago I never have unprotected sex unless actively ttc

ChocolateCakeYum · 25/12/2021 11:47

I think you need to try a pill for longer. 3 different kinds in 6 weeks isn’t good for you. Also do a pregnancy test.

That said I hated the pill. Really didn’t get on with it. I tried for a year and I put on a ton of weight, felt sick all the time and my skin was awful. Never again!

Notonthenewrug · 25/12/2021 12:33

I know I've messed around a lot, there were genuine reasons.
I was given my first pill (progesterone only) at the sexual health clinic where I had my coil removed by the consultant. It was a difficult removal and I was uncomfortable after, so just tokn the first pill she gave (cheapest I think). However I should never have gone for progesterone only due to my hormonal acne. I did stick with this for 3 months but the giant boils/lumps didn't clear up, which is why they prescribed a second pill. I specifically asked for something to help my skin but they gave Microgynon. I've had this in the past and didn't get on with it but it was under a different name and I initially didn't realise it was basically Microgynon. Hence why I switched. Im going to give the Yasmin 3 months (unless symptoms get really bad) because I know I need to give it a chance.

I feel awful today!

minniep · 25/12/2021 13:20

Yes the pill did that to me, people were always asking me if I was pregnant as it was like I had morning sickness. It also made me cranky and hormonal. I had my tubes removed after DC3 which has been amazing

Notonthenewrug · 25/12/2021 13:34

@minniep that's how I feel. Definitely the same as early pregnancy. Exactly the same but I felt similar when the Mirena coil was fitted! I wish I'd not started it before Xmas, only been on it 4 days and been ill for the last 2/3!

OP posts:
CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/12/2021 16:30

Yes, I get 3 months of ‘morning sickness’ every time I change pill

Blossom64265 · 25/12/2021 16:43

I tried several versions of the Pill. All of them made me horribly, debilitating ill. On one I started well, but within a couple of months couldn’t stand up the vertigo was so bad. I am glad hormonal birth control is available for the women that want it and that it works for, but it is not the benign drug that society makes it out to be.

Mary46 · 25/12/2021 18:25

I was on Dianette then arm implant then mirena. Not sure long term as Im close to 50. Op it maybe symptoms of adjusting to new pills. Im prone to cysts too. Hope u ok
