It will take longer than you think.Turkey crown from Cook says minimum 48 hrs in a fridge. Today is the day to check your times!

Eeeek thank you!

chocolateorangeinhaler · 22/12/2021 06:42

Oh for goodness sake. This is Mumsnet surely everyone plucks and draws their own freshly slaughtered turkey on Christmas morning before cooking. ??

Billybagpuss · 22/12/2021 06:43

Smiling now remembering the episode of the royal family where they didn’t.

Firstshoes · 22/12/2021 06:45

Thank you so much for this. Mine needs to go in the fridge now. I wouldn't have remembered!

lightand · 22/12/2021 06:50

Good point.

I did today decide I need to look at portion sizes as well. I have sort of just assumed that what I have will feed the 5000, but I need to properly work out just how many meals it will do.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/12/2021 06:50

@chocolateorangeinhaler fair point, duly notedGrin

I was just having a brew in peace, thank god for you OP, I didn't even think about about the huge turkey breast in the freezer, I'm off to get mine in the fridge, happy Christmas to you ❤️

Cheermonger · 22/12/2021 07:01

Just got mine out and am twitching- it says extra large crown serves 11-14 . There will be ten of us and also gammon. It will be enough won’t it? I always always worry there won’t be enough, stoooopid 😫

Of course it will be enough. Whatever you have will be enough. People just have to not be greedy moos.

And was it Adrian Mole? His mum running it under the hot tap on Christmas Day.

Ours is fresh but I have to figure out collecting it tomorrow and also working all day.

Modwolvesrock · 22/12/2021 07:06

If the turkey is a little on the small side, extra pigs in blankets, stuffing and roast potatoes will help!

anotherbrewplease · 22/12/2021 07:11

Okay - I know this is probably dumb - but surely if you take the turkey out now that will be 72 hours not 48??

Coronado2 · 22/12/2021 07:11

Thank you. I don't have a turkey, I have a vegan roast, but they speci6said defrost for 3 days and I said I'd set an alarm and then promptly forgot all about it!

KatherineJaneway · 22/12/2021 07:12

Thanks, mine goes into the fridge this morning Xmas Smile

GemmaRuby · 22/12/2021 07:14

I do love MN. Thank you OP

Billybagpuss · 22/12/2021 07:31

Yes @Mamette I remember that. A young Steven Mangan.

BonnyEm · 22/12/2021 07:33

You're a good'un. Cheers OP and merry Christmas to you and yours Xmas Smile

freelions · 22/12/2021 07:36

Some of you must have big fridges!

I'll take mine out of the freezer first thing on Xmas eve and plonk it in the belfast sink to defrost

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/12/2021 07:43

@anotherbrewplease
Indeed, but today is the day to check it. Mine says 48 hrs in the fridge but from previous experience I have ended up putting it on the side in a desperate attempt to get it defrosted in time!

Ta very much OP!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/12/2021 07:46

@Cheermonger
It will be enough. We had an extra large crown from marks for more years than I remember. It fed 10 big eaters no problem.

OP posts:
SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/12/2021 07:47

@freelions
I do have a big fridge now. Previously the garage or a car boot have been brought into play!

Roussette · 22/12/2021 07:48

I have a 5.5kg turkey crown. I googled how long to defrost and it says 2.5 days in a fridge.
There is no way it will defrost in a fridge as far as I'm concerned! I want it prepped on Friday (cranberry sage and butter under the skin) and after one night in the fridge, it is no different than when I took it out the freezer!
So I totally agree OP.

Anything I put in a fridge to defrost... doesn't. And my fridge is only 5degrees... normal coldness.

Russelhobskettle · 22/12/2021 07:50

How big are these turkeys?? I don't think I've ever needed to defrost anything for longer than about 36 hours in the fridge. Oh no - I don't provide enough food!!

Looneytune253 · 22/12/2021 07:55

YANBU DH deals with cooking etc and he asked me to google how long our turkey would take to defrost and it was 5 DAYS!! Eek!
