I could have bought fresh but would cost £££.

I think if it as a tax in my uselessness/laziness.

I would never remember to defrost a turkey in time. We’d be eating on 27th December or something.

@chocolateorangeinhaler

Oh for goodness sake. This is Mumsnet surely everyone plucks and draws their own freshly slaughtered turkey on Christmas morning before cooking. ??
Actually turkeys are really common. We are having a vegan alternative which is low fat so no contributing to the obesity crisis for us.

Ours is a mix of spinach and grated carrot, bound together with water. It’s delicious and you can’t tell the difference between it and real turkey.

DeepaBeesKit · 22/12/2021 18:00

No way can I fit a turkey in my freezer!

I order fresh from the butcher and collect it christmas eve. Its usually cold enough that I leave it in the car boot overnight.

NumaNumaYay · 22/12/2021 18:02

Dunno what you mean, op, Twizzlers can be cooked straight from frozen?

Pinetreesfall · 22/12/2021 18:16

Would never buy a frozen turkey or big joint for that reason! I'd be worried it wouldn't be ready in time - and then where on earth do you put all your normal Christmas food while it's taking up the whole fridge?!
(Maybe you all live in mansions with more than one fridge Grin)

@Billybagpuss

Smiling now remembering the episode of the royal family where they didn’t.
Ha yes. Watched that recently. They got it out of the freezer at midday on Christmas Day with people coming at 2. Love that episode

Nothing defrosts in my fridge. I defrost frozen stuff on the worktop. We have a fresh turkey that dh bought today

itwasntaparty · 22/12/2021 18:50

Takes over 24 hours in my fridge to defrost a pack of chicken breasts, I dread to think how long it would take a turkey.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/12/2021 18:53

Got mine out this morning, it’s still frozen in the fridge!

StateOfTheUterus · 22/12/2021 18:54

Don’t forget to put the sprouts on too 😜

Bellafrenum · 22/12/2021 18:56

Oh yes, thanks! I have a medium crown - not sure how long it will take to defrost, maybe put it in the fridge tomorrow?

Funnylittlefloozie · 22/12/2021 19:03

None of 7s like turkey, so we are having a big gorgeous ham. The gammon came out of the freezer earlier on and is gently defrosting in the garage. Mind you, its freezing in there as well, so it might have to live in the kitchen overnight!

CharSiu · 22/12/2021 19:08

We usually have fresh so thank you op I didn’t realise it would take so long, it’s now in the fridge having just played food Jenga with everything else.

oftenbaffled · 22/12/2021 20:14

Where do you all get your frozen turkeys from btw?

FleeceNavidadFromTheSheep · 22/12/2021 23:24

Mine is a Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze - had them a few times, and they're fine.

Billlius · 23/12/2021 08:34

@StateOfTheUterus My sprouts have been on since Monday 🥇

Got mine in Lidl a few weeks ago.
Roussette · 23/12/2021 09:01

I don't buy a frozen turkey. I buy fresh and freeze it. 5.5kg turkey crown

DiamondBright · 24/12/2021 10:12

I've only got a small turkey crown, it's been defrosting in the fridge for 24 hours and is still very frozen, I'm hoping it'll be defrosted enough to go into brine tonight and that'll be long enough.

What are everyone's thoughts on leaving it in an unheated brick out building overnight? It'll be colder than the pantry floor. It's very mild weather wise though, no frost this morning.

Mumoblue · 24/12/2021 10:16

I’ve got a turkey crown in my fridge for tomorrow. It’s only a small one and it reckoned it needed about 18-24 hours defrosting.
This is probably a stupid question but how can I tell if it’s defrosted enough? Because it’s in one of those bags. I poked it and it was squishy, not solid, but it still had some ice on the top. Just wondering if I need to put it on the counter!

… my ex used to cook the turkey, if you can’t tell! 😂
