Died 21 years ago.

Pushed her son out of the way of a speeding boat and sacrificed herself.

Beautiful, smart, funny and talented woman.

Much missed.

Berthatydfil · 18/12/2021 10:13

Yes so sad.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/12/2021 10:14

Gosh, I didn't know that! I knew she died in a boating accident but not how. Poor, brave woman.

randomchap · 18/12/2021 10:21

It's an absolute disgrace how her killer escaped justice. Below is from wiki

"The powerboat involved in the collision was controlled by Guillermo González Nova, multimillionaire president of the Comercial Mexicana supermarket chain, who was on board with members of his family. The boat was owned by Carlos González Nova, brother and founder of the chain. One employee of Guillermo González Nova, boathand José Cen Yam, stated that he was in control of the boat at the time of the incident.[15][16] Eyewitnesses said that Cen Yam was not at the controls and that the boat was travelling much faster than the speed of one knot that González Nova said.

Cen Yam was found guilty of culpable homicide and was sentenced to 2 years 10 months in prison. He was allowed under Mexican law to pay a punitive fine of 1,034 pesos (about €63, £61 or US$90) in lieu of the prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay approximately US$2,150 in restitution to MacColl's family, an amount based on his wages. People who said they spoke to Cen Yam after the killing said he received money for taking the blame."

Jesus i didn't know that either.

Fatherliamdeliverance · 18/12/2021 10:27

Didn't know what had happened but what awful corrupt people, paying someone off like that.

HunterGatherer · 18/12/2021 10:28

Money is often a "get out of jail free" card.
Only have to look at the fiasco with Epstein and even on a small scale the killers of Yousef Mackey, the young schoolboy stabbed to death in Manchester a couple of years ago.
So wrong.

hangrylady · 18/12/2021 10:29

It's such a tragic story

inigomontoyahwillcox · 18/12/2021 10:31

Such an awful waste of such a talented woman, mother and from what I know very decent human being.

My friend and I accidentally attended a fundraising event in Hackney many years ago being run by her friends and members of her family to raise money for legal fees to pursue the driver of the boat, heard her mum speak - was heartbreaking.

Little known Kirsty MacColl fact - she sang backing vocals on You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties by Jona Lewie.

UnsuitableHat · 18/12/2021 10:33

She was fabulous - thinking of her today.

Carpetsareforflying · 18/12/2021 10:39

Never new this. How tragic 😢

Dollywilde · 18/12/2021 10:42

I used to work with one of her sons, the one she pushed out of the way. He was such a lovely chap, we weren’t close and his mum never came up in conversation but I often thought how proud she would have been of him. Great guy.

Twoweekcruise · 18/12/2021 10:46

I often think of her. Such a tragedy.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 18/12/2021 10:46

She was a force of nature and a wonderful talent. Much missed.

middleager · 18/12/2021 10:52

There's a BBC series on iplayer about the 80s. Was watching it yesterday when Kirsty came on singing 'New England'. What a talented singer.
Such a tragic story.

RJnomore1 · 18/12/2021 10:53

RIP Kirsty, an amazing talent and an amazing woman.

I didn't know that but now I do, I can hear it's her

I adore her.

As a teen I was highly influenced by her dress-sense.

Often think about what music she'd be doing if still here.

AiryFairyLights · 18/12/2021 13:40

Im still struggling to believe it’s been 21years! Where did that time go! ❤️

Butchyrestingface · 18/12/2021 13:41

I remember that. So very sad. Poor woman was no age. I hope her sons are having a wonderful life.

TimeThyme · 18/12/2021 14:08

It's so sad to think about her passing. On the music side I loved Kite and Electric Landlady from late 80s. Still listen and love them today. What a voice :)

ShinyMe · 18/12/2021 14:21

I always have a bit of a cry about Kirsty MacColl around this time of year. Her poor mother worked so hard to try and get some justice for her, and never managed with the corrupt system over there. Just such a horrible death, those poor little boys seeing it all.

Riverlee · 18/12/2021 14:23

21 years ago! Feels like yesterday. I

Ciaram55 · 18/12/2021 14:25

I often think of her and the horror her poor sons went through to witness that. It's heartbreaking.
