To Be Fed Up of Candles in the Xmas Gift Section

superblondie28 · 16/12/2021 21:03

Why oh why are the shops full of candles, those reed thingys and other types of what are essentially glorified overpriced air fresheners in the Christmas gift sections?

For one thing, I wouldn't dream of giving anything like that as a Christmas present. It's like saying 'your house smells' in my opinion. A can of £2 Airwick will do the job without spending £15 on a candle!!

There's less choice of other pressies because they take up so much room on the shelves.

As a migraine sufferer, I hate smelling them all.

Is it just me that feels like candles, etc are the new toiletteries gift set? Thoughtless presents 🎁?

Just me?

I like candles. My mum got me a jo malone candle and soap for my birthday, I was really pleased.

TheSpiral · 16/12/2021 21:09

The only thing I really want for Christmas is a Neom Scent to Destress candle. I love candles. And toiletries.

FangsForTheMemory · 16/12/2021 21:09

I won't have anything that burns in my house. No candles, no joss sticks.

justaddcandlelight · 16/12/2021 21:09

Oooh I love candles, which is probably a give away with my user name. Those plug ins are disgusting. I'd much rather receive a candle. Candle light makes everything more beautiful. Plug in defusers do not.

Nah.... you need the Real Luxury one!!!
LittleBabyCheeses · 16/12/2021 21:10

I love scented candles. Have a Neom one burning now. We’re all different 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Comedycook · 16/12/2021 21:10

I'm totally baffled as to why candles are so popular

Wrenna · 16/12/2021 21:10

I actually don’t really think they take up too much room, but unless you know the recipients taste it’s kind of generic. As a fellow migraine sufferer, I sympathize completely, plus my lips and eyelids will swell because of the awful chemicals.

That said I do love candles but wish they would offer high quality pretty UNscented ones, other than the paraffin shite you find in the pound shop.

MatildaIThink · 16/12/2021 21:10

They are full of them because people keep buying them. I don't get the appeal of candles or the smelly stuff, but in general people (more women than men) seem to love them.

2TurtleDovesInARow · 16/12/2021 21:11

I like candles but can't bear air freshener sprays or plug ins. Definitely prefer a candle to a toiletry set!

PinkiOcelot · 16/12/2021 21:13

I love candles and reed diffusers. I don’t think buying those for someone means you think their house smells.

SmolCat · 16/12/2021 21:17

Oh no, I’ve literally got ‘nice reed diffuser’ on my list for someone’s present. Shall I not get it?? They don’t like books or movies or clothes or food or drink and I need a generic ‘nice’ extra present for them.

happygolurkey · 16/12/2021 21:20

i hate scented candles and stuff too. they give me a splitting headache and catch my throat.

I've been given one of those diffuser things every year for the last few years from the same person. I was confused first time: 'Someone's given me an air freshener for Christmas?'

Hohofortherobbers · 16/12/2021 21:20

I don't understand the candle fascination. Don't people worry about the fire risk, especially when there's kids around who may be tempted to play

You don't leave a lit candle within reach of children or next to anything flammable - obviously.

Personally I only light in the evening when the kids are in bed and put them out an hour or two later.

HairyFanjoBanjo · 16/12/2021 21:25

Reed diffusers are annoying dust magnets of doom.

Scented candles are smoke spreading, migraine inducing, overpriced and over perfumed pots of money waste.

So yep, I’m with you OP.

Mindymomo · 16/12/2021 21:26

My DS works for a fragrance company that makes candles, diffusers and lamps. I have loads in my house, but agree they aren’t for everyone.

Nearlytheretrees · 16/12/2021 21:26

I love a scented candle but then I also like bath gift sets

I’m not ‘fascinated’ by them, I just really like them. I choose scents I really like, and they make me feel cozy. My children don’t touch them because they know not to touch naked flames.
LittleBabyCheeses · 16/12/2021 21:27

And I don’t think there’s much of a fire risk to having a lit candle in the room that I’m in while I’m reading my book in the evening Grin

girlywhirly · 16/12/2021 21:34

I don’t burn real candles, too dangerous with a cat climbing on the furniture. I use LED battery powered candles instead, no smell or risk. If I want a festive scent I use an essential oil blend on potpourri which is more subtle.

BringUsSomeFrigginPudding · 16/12/2021 21:36

A candle as a gift means my house smells? Confused That's a new one for me!

I like candles well enough. I'd far rather have a candle than toiletries. I don't think the two compare at all.

I don't drink, so a bottle of wine would be a crap gift for me, but I know that for some it would be welcomed and enjoyed. We don't all like the same things. If I hated candles and received them, I'd give them to someone else I knew who I thought might enjoy them.

icedcoffees · 16/12/2021 21:38

I have wax melts burning constantly when we're home and awake.

I love the smell. No kids here and they're stored well out of the way of the cats Smile

MrsLarry · 16/12/2021 21:39

I love candles. Would love one as a gift, and definitely wouldn't think anyone was insinuating my house stunk. What a wierd thought princess you have.

Fluffymule · 16/12/2021 21:48

A safe yet unimaginative gift.

Many people do seem to like them so perhaps better than one of the ubiquitous boxed body product sets that swamp the shelves too.

So many just get put straight into present cupboards for re-gifting too I think.
